Name synonyms/alternatives

Discuss all aspects of editing the data and databases in EHM here. Have a question about the EHM Editor, EHM Assistant, editing the .cfg files, hex editing the .dat or .db files? Want to tweak the EHM exe file to change league rules/structure, start date etc? This is the place!

Have a bug or feature request for the EHM Editor? Post them in the EHM Editor thread. Please start a new thread or post in another thread if you have a question about how to use the EHM Editor.

Given the large number of questions on similar topics, we ask that you start a new thread for a new question unless you can locate a similar question in an existing thread. This will hopefully ensure that similar questions do not get buried in large threads.

Name synonyms/alternatives

Post by archibalduk »

A new function I have added to the Editor is the ability to match up synonym first names when importing spreadsheets. For instance, if you enter Fedor Tyutin in a spreadsheet, the Editor will check for both Fedor Tyutin and Fyodor Tyutin. This should help us reduce the number of mistakes/errors we make in research spreadsheets (and hopefully make Manimal's job marginally easier). Hopefully I can roll-out the same thing for surnames, but I'm starting off with first names for now.

Anyhow, I need to compile a list of synonym/alternative spellings of similar names. Would anybody be interested in helping out? If so, all you have to do is list them in this thread. All alternatives for a name should be listed in a single line and separated with a comma (with no spaces). Ideally they should all be lowercase (but I can correct this later if needs be).

Here are some examples:

alex,alexander,alexandre,alexei,alexey
andrew,andy
anthony,tony
artem,arytom
bill,billy,will,william
ben,benjamin
bob,bobby,robert,robbie
cam,cameron
chris,chrisophe,christopher
col,colin
colt,colton
dan,daniel,danil,daniil,danny
dave,david
dimitri,dimitry,dmitri,dmitry
evgeni,evgeny,jevgenij,yevgeni,yevgeny
fedor,fyodor
geoff,geoffrey,jeff,jeffrey
jacob,jake
james,jim,jimmy
john,johnny,jon,jonathan,jonny,jononthon
josh,joshua
kev,kevin
matt,matthew
max,maximillian,maxwell
michael,mike
nate,nathan
nic,nicholas,nicolas,nick,nicky
nik,nikolai,nikolay
oli,ollie,oliver,olly
rich,richard
sam,samuel
sergei,sergey
stan,stanislav,stanislaw,stanley
stephen,steve,steven
thomas,tom,tommy
tim,timothy
ty,tyson
vincent,vinnie,vinny
vlad,vladimir
zach,zachary,zack

The more alternatives we can list out, the better! :-)

I have expanded the list in the first post. What I could really do with are suggestions of common alternatives of Russian first names. I know there are a lot of Russians in the DB who have their first names spelled one way and then on the NHL website/Elite Prospects have it spelled a different way.
