Rebuilding the Red Wings

Post by basnyy213 » Thu Feb 15, 2018 10:35 pm

I had thought about doing one of these for a little while. If people seem interested I'll keep it up. Taking over at the beginning of 17-18

GOALIES

Petr Mrazek, 25 (1 year, $4 mil)- my goalie going forward, game seems to undervalue him but hopefully he can turn it around. If not I'll have to hunt for a goalie.
Jimmy Howard, 33 (2 years, $5.29 mil) - no sense in keeping him, he'll back up Mrazek unless I can trade him

DEFENSE

Trevor Daley, 33 (3 yrs, $3.17 mil) - not an awful contract but no real sense in keeping him if another team has a good offer
Mike Green, 31 (1 yr, $6 mil) - my top trade chip, looking for at least a 1st for this rental
Danny DeKeyser 27 (5 yrs, $5 mil) - serviceable 2nd pair defenseman but that contract needs to go if possible
Johnathon Ericsson, 33 (3 yrs, $4.25 mil) - bad contract and a bad player, going to be begging teams to take him
Xavier Ouellet, 24 (2 yrs, $1.25 mil) - going to play him a bunch, see what he can do
Nick Jensen, 26 (2 yrs, $813k) - same as XO, he's good depth
Niklas Kronwall, 36 (2 yrs, $4.75 mil) - available for the right offer but I'll probably keep him as a veteran
Chris Lee, 36 (1 yr, $1.5 mil) - signed as a potential boom or bust player, he'll be rental bait at the deadline

FORWARDS

Andreas Athanasiou, 23 (1 yr, $1.1 mil) - potential building block, hopefully he can break out in a top 6 role this year. Untouchable
Tomas Tatar, 26 (4 years, $5.3 mil) - might be a trade chip, I'll judge offers on him
Luke Glendening, 28 (4 years, $1.8 mil) - depth forward, probably not worth anything in trades
Dylan Larkin, 21 (1 yr, $925k) - potential top line center, going to be the new face of the franchise. Untouchable in trades
Frans Nielsen, 33 (5 yrs, $5.25 mil) - good lord that contract is awful. Will trade for a bag of pucks
Riley Sheahan, 25 (1 yr, $2.01 mil) - going to give him a chance on a scoring line
Henrik Zetterberg, 36 (4 yrs, $6.08 mil) - we'll see how he does. If an offer comes in I'll move him but not in a rush to do so. I'd like to come out of the rebuild about the time his contract ends
Justin Abdelkader, 30 (6 yrs, $4.25 mil) - decent depth but not with that contract
Martin Frk, 23 (1 yr, $650k) - depth scoring
Darren Helm, 30 (4 yrs, $3.85) - seriously someone take away Ken Holland's pen
Anthony Mantha, 22 (1 year, $863k) - hopefully Larkin's triggerman for the next decade. Untouchable
Gustav Nyquist, 27 (2 yrs, $4.75) - trade bait, won't be looking to resign him as a free agent so I'll try and get something back

The story so far....

11 games into the season we're 6-3-2. Apparently the team didn't get the rebuilding memo.

Chris Lee has been a boom so far, 8 points in 11 games. I'm hoping he'll be worth a first.

Arizona offered me a 2018 2nd for Frans Nielsen, i accepted before they could reconsider. I flipped this pick and the rights to Adam Almquist to St Louis for their 2018 1st.

Larkin leads the team in goals with 6, Tatar is the assists (11) and points (16!) leader. Neither goalie has played well

Trade Deadline

I'd say that was successful

Leaving the organization- Mike Green, Gustav Nyquist, Trevor Daley, Danny DeKeyser and Chris Lee

Coming in- Timothy Liljegren, rights to Nikita Popugaeyv, 1sts from CAL, FLA, ARI, StL

Unfortunately we're 2nd in the Atlantic and 5th in the East so we need to start losing

The Draft

Alright this is my favorite part of the game. Drafts and prospects. I have 3rd, 5th, 8th, 24th and 25th to play with. Unfortunately, Colorado won the draft lottery. Ever since the results were announced I have been trying to come up with a package that would allow me to move up in the draft, finally coming to an agreement on draft day where I send them #3 and #8 for #1 which nets me Dahlin

1- Dahlin: the franchise offensive defenseman. On draft day he is pegged as a more talented Erik Karlsson so needless to say I'm excited about this pick
5- Filip Zadina, LW - labeled a more talented version of Huberdeau, goal scoring forward. I would've liked a center here but with Zadina on the board I couldn't pass
24- Jake Wise, C - I got my center, labeled a more talented Henrik Zetterberg, he was ranked 18th so I'm happy to have gotten him here
25- Justus Annunen, G - i reached a bit for this one. But he was ranked 40th and he had a 5 star potential as a goalie. My scouts loved him and this could address a need if he pans out
56- Christian Krygier, D - getting into some guesswork here but he's rated well by my scouts with A's in Def Skill and Skating so he should be a good shutdown D even if the points aren't there
71- DJ King, D - wow the forwards dried up quickly. Another defensive defenseman with some offensive upside
83- Bobby Linell, RW - not even ranked but my scouts that saw him loved him so I figured I'd take a shot with my extra 3rd
87- Torbjorn Bjersellus, RD - yes i picked him because of his name. Sue me
89 - Domenic Morin, C - i don't know where i picked up all these 3rds but i'm running out of players to draft. This looks like a long shot but high upside
102- Domink Bokk, RW - 4 of the 5 scouts say he has 3 star potential. The 5th said he has 5 star with Jordan Eberle as a comparable. Not bad for a 4th rounder
118- Trevor Peca, RW - Comparable of Jakob Silfverberg. Worth a shot at 4 stars
121- Petri Immonen, C - looks like an ideal bottom 6 forward, some offensive skills, strong defensively and high end skating
149- Dustin Manz, C - similar to Immonen but seems to have higher upside
168- Michael Kloz, C - similar to last two picks
180 - Saku Vesterinen, RD - huge long shot. Not sure he will be much of anything
211 - Marc McLaughlin - C, RW - has potential but report says he lacks hockey sense so i doubt he'll develop. I looked at him a few times before this pick but since he was still on the board i snagged
him without and better options

So I'm guessing I'll sign Dahlin and Zadina and have them on my roster on opening night. Anyone beyond those two will have to show well in training camp.

2017-18 season recap

Nashville beat Toronto in 4 games to win their first Cup.

Unfortunately, we made the playoffs. Beat Ottawa in 6 and lost to Toronto in 5

Henrik Zetterberg won the Lester Patrick award

Lines at the end of the season were

Holmstrom-Zetterberg-Tatar
Athanasiou-Larkin-Mantha
Svechnikov-Sheahan-Frk
Helm-Glendening-Abdelkader

Ouellet-Jensen
Kronwall-Liljegren
Ericsson-Hickets

Mrazek
Howard

-Neither goalie cracked a .900 save percentage
-Jensen did well after Green was traded, he stepped into a top pair role and put up 30 points in 51 games
-Tatar had a monstrous season 46-48-94
-in addition to Tatar, Zetterberg, Larkin, Mantha and Athanasiou all topped 70 points

I'd call this season a qualified success. I didn't tank as well as I had hoped but thanks to teams trading for players even though they weren't in the playoffs I was able to acquire lottery picks and grab a few high end prospects

The Offseason

Well....this was interesting. I signed Dahlin and Popugaeyv (instead of Zadina) and called up Liljegren. I shopped around the market for depth (targeted Ryan Murray heavily but lost out) but didn't intend to use up much of my cap space. I ended up signing Ian Cole for 3 years at $2.1 mil per. But as we got into training camp I had agents approach me for Mikael Backlund and Brandon Davidson who got 6 years at $3.3 mil and 2 years at $1.7 mil respectively. Then the Rangers put Filip Chytil on the block (no idea why) so i offered them Evgeni Svechnikov and a 4th and they accepted. The signing of Backlund pushed him down to the minors to start the year though.

Lines to start the year

Holmstrom-Zetterberg-Tatar
Athanasiou-Larkin-Mantha
Popugaeyv-Backlund-Sheahan
Helm-Glendening-Abdelkader

Ouellet-Jensen
Cole-Liljegren
Davidson-Dahlin

Mrazek-Howard

I'd love a more proven goaltender but I don't think that is going to happen for now

traded Christoffer Ehn to Nashville for Sam Girard- moved a forward that wouldn't make my roster for a defenseman who might if he develops as projected.

We're 20-15-6 through the halfway mark of the season. Dahlin has had some lumps and was sent down to Grand Rapids to call up Girard to give him a look

Prospect update
-D Dahlin NHL (1-15-16 in 40, -7 AvgRate- 7.07) not awful but is being outplayed by Liljegren and I want him to get more ice time
-D Liljegren NHL (2-14-16 in 41, -4 AR- 7.37) not bad for a first year defenseman
-LW Popugaeyv NHL (12-10-22 in 41, AR 7.54) given 3rd line minutes and doing well in them
-D Girard AHL (5-20-25 in 35, AR 6.76)
-LW Zadina QMJHL (18-21-39 in 35, AR 7.34)
-C Rasmussen AHL (16-19-35 in 44, AR 6.48) went from being an afterthought to a potential piece, game seems much higher on him and has him at #6 on my top prospect
-C Chytil AHL (14-5-19 in 42, AR 6.60) not thrilled with these numbers
-C Wise HE (2-12-20 in 25, AR 7.04) currently lighting up the World Juniors, might try to sign him this season

Goal scoring leader is Athanasiou (24-19-43)
Assist leader is Mantha (17-24-41)

Mrazek and Howard are both playing awful
Tatar and Zetterberg are way down from last year

2019 Draft

well this season didn't go as planned. More on that below. We have the 9th (LA) and 13th picks in the 1st round

9th- Mark Ignatov, LW - There don't seem to be a lot of gamebreakers already. Seeing anything from Huberdeau to Skinner as a comparable. Expected to be a goal scorer
13th- Jack Malone, RW - a position of need for me. Two way forward. Mark Stone was a comparable
44th- Eemeli Vittasmaki, RD - Offensive defenseman, pegged as a late first rounder but slid into the mid second
55th- Carson Moynihan, LD - Small, highliy skilled. Almost a point per gamer at Western Michigan
75th- Jake Krygier, RW - goal scorer but a long term project
89th - Jarett Archibald, RD - not sure about this one, i try to avoid players with consistency concerns but my scouts liked him
137th- Eric Broberg, LW - another scorer but questions about his speed
168th- Iouri Kizimov, C - a defensive minded center
199th- RIcky Lundbohm, LD - a purely offensive D. Great stats across the board but an E in defense. Can i convert him to forward?

2018-19 Recap

Detorit finished 7th in the Atlantic and 19th in the league. Certainly not what i expected. My goalies couldn't stop a beach ball. I didn't have any pieces of worth to trade at the deadline so I wasn't even able to turn this into a building year. To top it all off, I planned on bringing in Zadina but he signed in the KHL

Key notes
-Liljegren is looking like an important piece going forward. He managed 4-30-34 in 82 games and was named to the Rookie All Star Team and won the Calder
-Dahlin did not do so hot, I'll give him another shot this next season but 1-23-24 in 53 NHL games and 1-5-6 in 25 AHL games is not cutting it
-Athanasiou is developing into quite the sniper, ending the season with 47-41-88 in 82
-Mantha went 33-48-81 in 77
-Larkin went 27-35-62 in 80
-Zetterberg is clearly on the back 9 of his career, going 20-37-57 in 82. He'll be bumped to LW3 and PP2 next season
-I might dive into Free Agency, packing $18 mil in cap space

Partially through the season

the Wings are 42-12-4 for 4th in the Eastern Conference (2nd in the Atlantic)

Mrazek had been playing well until a season ending injury in December
Eberle is leading the team in goals with 40-35-75 in 58
Dahlin is leading the team in assists showing himself worth trading up to draft with 8-61-69 and an 18 game point streak on the year
Tatar is leading the team in points with 32-55-87 in 58
Seguin has been a huge factor on the year with 31-52-83 despite some injury issues (53 games)

So basically I've been running a high octane offense, averaging 4.6 (1st) goals per game while giving up 3.43 (29th), Adding Pesce helped the defense and Liljegren and Dahlin are going nuts on the 1st PP unit but overall I need to shore up my D corps. Oullet and Davidson have not been carrying their weight. Attempts to upgrade the position going into the deadline have not been succesful

2020 NHL Entry Draft

minus a 1st rounder from the Pesce trade

58th Overall Keaton Hockley, RW - Goal scorer that needs to improve his defense and decision making
88th - Nicolas Kingsbury-Fournier, RW/LW - power forward, pegged as a two way talent
89th - Anthony Hamel, RD - offensive dynamo with poor defense
113th - Brett Kaiser, RD - high ratings across the board, rated as a more talented Roman Josi
120th - Rasmus Paulsson, RW/C - goal scorer with high speed and hockey sense
123rd - Malcom Clark, LW/LD - defensive player capable of playing forward or D
151st- Jose Tianen, C - excellent ratings across the board, none lower than a B. This is why I have scouts ignore well known a lot
182nd - Slater Higgs, LD - Offensive defenseman
213th - Andro Nilsson, LD - high ratings, some concerns about defense

2019-2020 Season Recap

The Wings were 3rd in the East and 2nd in the Atlanctic but got bounced by the Lightning 4-1 in the first round
the Jets beat the Bolts for the Cup

Tyler Seguin made the Second All Star team with 35-68-103 in 69, and was runner up for the King Clancy
Tomas Tatar mad the First All Star team with 41-73-114 in 80 and was runner up for the Hart, winner of the Art Ross, won the King Clancy, and second runner up for the Lady Byng
Jordan Eberle was runner up for the Rocket with 48-49-97 in 82
Dahlin went 11-76-87 in 82 but somehow didn't make top 3 for the Norris

Unfortunately Zadina signed with CSKA and his rights expired making him a free agent. I will continue trying to sign him but he doesn't seem to be interested

So I have not been playing this much anymore, I wanted to provide a little better ending point though.

The Wings got swept out of the Cup Final by Dallas due to shaky goaltending and injuries.

Neither goalie posted above a .900
Dahlin managed 46 points while Liljegren had 61
Tatar went 41-60-101 in a contract year so he will not be back
Popugayev responded to a 2nd line role with 36-44-80
Seguin went 45-50-95 in 77
Larkin managed 25-37-62 in 69
Mantha did 30-42-72 in 65
Eberle also cracked 100 points with 43-60-103

2021 NHL ENTRY DRAFT

#29 - Tuomas Jarvio, C - a power forward with a good shot, skating, and passing. Strong defensively
#91 - Stavros Hopkins, LD - do it all defenseman in the mold of Aaron Ekblad
#122 - Trey Feeny, LW - small, fast scorer
#153 - Gord Franson, G - shot in the dark, my goalie scout liked him
#184 - Jack Wackfeldt, RW - high end scorer that could have trouble adapting to the US
#215 - Gil Ross, RW - shooter with bad marks on D

Last post for now

I wanted to do this to see what it will take to get the Wings back to contender status. I did that. However realistically they aren't going to luck into Backlund, Seguin and Eberle. They aren't drafting Dahlin. And Toronto won't trade Liljegren

Going into next season my team looks like this

Holmstrom (24)-Seguin (29)-Eberle (31)
Popugaeyv-Larkin (24)-Mantha (26)
Ignatov (20)-Wise (21)-Athanasiou (26)
Leipsic (27)-Backlund (32)-Rasmussen (22)

Dahlin (21)-Pesce (26)
Girard (23)-Liljegren (22)
Davidson (29)-Hamonic (30)

Fitzpatrick (23)
Mason (33)

It's a good mix of in prime (Seguin, Eberle, Pesce), leaving prime (Backlund, Hamonic), entering prime (Larkin, Mantha) and developing (Dahlin, Liljegren, Ignatov)

I have some young players but also have the following impact players coming up

Mark Ignatov, 20, LW
Bobby Linell, 20, RW
Carson Moynihan, 20, LD
Brett Kaiser, 19 RD

So for anyone that's paid attention, thank you! I had a lot of fun doing this and might get back to it eventually

Post by uknownick » Fri Sep 14, 2018 1:39 am

Have you tweaked your tactics? I feel your lineup is good enough to win a cup given the right tactics. I won the Cup with the Wings in the first year.

My lineup by the 2018 draft:

EKane Galchenyuk(Zetterberg+Athanasiou) Wheeler(a package with Nyqvist)
Tatar Larkin Mantha
Makeyev(KHL) Kadri Glendening
DalColle Byvaltsev(KHL) Vey(KHL)

Krug Morrissey
Tryamkin(KHL) Zaitsev
DeKeser Larsen(KHL)

Lehner(JHoward)
Zapolski(KHL)

I signed a decent amount of players from KHL to play in AHL and my NHL roster. Toronto, Boston, Buffalo, and Jets missed the playoffs so I got Kadri, Gardiner (who I packed up with Nyqvist and flipped for Morrissey and Wheeler), Zaitsev, Krug, EKane, Wheeler, and Morrissey from these teams. In () are the players or place I got them for or from.

In my other saves, I always kept Zetterberg around but this time I tried to explore a trade opportunity and found out I can trade him for Necas, Heponiemi, Vesalainen, Borgstrom, or Chytil from their teams. But ultimately since Montreal traded Galchenyuk this summer, I decided to package AA and Zetterberg for him because IRL Montreal traded PK Subban for Weber (for so called leadership and experience). It makes perfect sense for Marc Bergevin to love Zetterberg as a proven Stanley Cup winner instead of a spoiled Galchenyuk :-p

Yeah. The issue was goaltending. Both goalies were horrible. This was a while ago so I don't remember who but I had quite a few key players hurt during the playoffs
