Does anyone know what the difference between an Independant, Semi-Dependant and Depandant farm team is? Does the parent club have more control over a dependant team than an independant one?
I would personally love to exert more controll over my farms teams developement of my prospects.

Independent--No affiliation to an NHL team at all. Do what they want.
Semi Dependent--a few players from NHL teams. Mostly their own though.
Dependent-Majority of players from NHL teams.
With Dep/Semi you will have players come and go from your rosters between clubs the NHL team is affiliated with, or the NHL itself. With independent the players are normally not contracted to anyone but you, but if they have NHL rights the NHL team may sign the player away from you at some point.
For an NHL team there is no independent farm team. They are all dependent or semi dependent on the NHL club for players.
The only way to control what the NHl club's farm team does is to take over controlling the farm team. There are plenty of threads here on how to do that. But to make it simple...Click Add GM.

Affiliation Differences
The Eastside UK Pre-Game Editor allows you to play with the affiliations and even add new stuff. I was curious to know a little bit about the editor in regards to affiliations. I found a few threads on here that talked about affiliations a little bit, but most of them were not really on the subject of my problem or thoughts.
I noticed that you can make your lower club either in the group of completely independent, semi-independent, and dependant. Now it isn't that I don't know the definition of being independent and dependant, but I just don't know how it fairs in the world of hockey.
I can only assume that if a team is completely dependant on you to give them players. Then that must mean they tend to stay away from signing much people, they have a very low budget to work with, or something is causing them to be in that category.
Now semi-independent can only mean that they are more than welcoming to you sending players down, but may not need them at that time.
Totally independent would only mean that you are welcome to send them down, but not a big deal in their eyes if they get them or not.
I am just curious to know if making your affiliate between the three can really change the way that you can work with your players.
For those that might know this right now, then please respond and let me know, because I would do this little project myself right now. I just know that it would take me awhile to see the difference and you usually have to do about 5 season before making the best choice in your opinion or thoughts.
So all in all, I hope someone can help me out a little bit with this issue.

Independent--No plyers at all from NHL teams, or higher league. Free to do what you want. Most AHL teams now have some dependency, although Chicago used to be indep. Now affiliated with Atlanta. ECHL teams--QUite a few are completely independent of NHL, and have a semi-dep relation with an AHL team. Some NHL-ECHL exists...like Phoenix COyotes-Phoenix Roadrunners.
Semi dependent--Means you rely on teams from higher leagues to send you some players. Usually, you have a limit on the number. See relationships the Oilers have with AHL teams in the original database.
Dependent--All your players come from higher league team you are affiliated with. Or at least virtually all. Manitoba Moose are dependent on Canucks.

Thank you for answering that and I am sorry that I am so late to thank you on posting your response.
I have been without the internet for the whole week.
Long story and don't have the time to explain it that well.
Aside from that, have you played with these options in the game? I am just curious, I did it and made a few affiliates dependent and it still seemed that they would fill the roster with players without a problem in the world.

Affiliate setting research and/or knowledge
Wondering if there is any official research or documentation about affiliate settings?
I have a general idea what they would do, but wondering if there was anything official.
Independent vs. Semi-Independent vs. Dependent.
Language-wise it makes sense, but wondering if anyone had in game stats what changing from one to another would do.

ideawithoutamind - I have merged your question into an existing thread which should answer your queries. See in particular the various answers from batdad above.
