I think they made a film (or a TV show) in the US about "Rocket" Richards, right??
Sadly it hasnt arrived over here yet (I even doubt it will....), but if somebody of u guys has watched it....is it a good film??
Of course my favorite hockey film is also "Slapshot".....but there is also a funny one who is called "Mistery, Alaska". Its about pond hockey and I liked it too.

Yeah the Rocket movie was pretty darn good. It is 2nd to Slapshot, but it is a much more serious movie dealing with the things Rocket went through as a French Canadian superstar back in the day.
Mystery Alaska--It was filmed here, and I actually auditioned for a part (cattle call) and got a call back. The call back was for the big tough defenseman. He was, as is the stereotype Dumb as a post. I could not pull off what they were looking for. Not shocking considering I had no bloody clue how to be a defensemen, let alone be dumb. Funny, my kid is now a big defenseman. Hmmm....that explains alot. Better go make sure he is studying.
Back: He is studying. WOW! And as for Mystery Alaska--I still have not seen it but my hockey buds say it is not worth it.

Yeah, it's gotta be Slapshot, and as I've mentioned if you guys haven't checked out the DVD 25th anniversary edition of Slaphsot you gotta track it down. They have a Hanson Vision fature where you can watch all the parts of the movie that have the Hansons in it, commentary track by the Hansons on the DVD, special interviews etc.
My favorite parts are when they are "making the bus look MEAN!" and while the "putting on the foil" part is a timeless classic between my freinds and I someone will often start off the beginning of the "the crowd is standing up to them... the hot dog venders are standing up to them... the peanut venders are standing up to them... and dammit if I was able to get down there I'D be standing up to them!!!!" speech from the guy in the booth from the scene where the Hansons going into the crowd.
Mystery Alska was good, but as mentioned cheesy and formulaic. Not as cheesy and forumlaic as Youngblood of course
But that has the "starring Patrick Swayze and Rob Lowe and filmed in the 80's" barriers to get over that Mystery doesn't.
Miracle is very good about the USA Miracle team, I want to see Rocket but haven't.
Not a movie but if you can ever get your hands on the "Legends of Hockey" tape series that's a MUST for all hockey fans.

DOH! How could I forget Miracle? I love that movie!Minstrel wrote: Miracle is very good about the USA Miracle team, I want to see Rocket but haven't.
And speaking of the Hansons... those guys are involved in a lot of charity work these days. They go around and play in charity hockey tournaments. They've done a couple in Boston. I can't remember if they were in the Denis Leary/Cam Neely ones or another in the area. Either way, they're still very active and doing some good with their old characters.

Iam not sure if its the same but when I was a little kid living in Switzerland they televised a series about hockey, but I sadly dont remember if its this one as I dont know the name of it!!!Minstrel wrote:Not a movie but if you can ever get your hands on the "Legends of Hockey" tape series that's a MUST for all hockey fans.
I can remember that it was a series about two brothers (or best friends, I dont remember) who were drafted into the NHL....think it was to Quebec. Then they played the Stanley Cup against the Big Bad Bruins in their black uniform. Still can remember that because that was one of the things who made me a B's fan, lol!!
The coach from the Quebec team had a curious ritual before every playoff series: he took a jersey from the opponent and took four nails. For every victory he put a nail into the jersey until they got four and the jersey was hanging on the wall, lol!!
That TV-show impressed me a lot, but sadly I wasnt able to find something about it....I even dont know the name of it so if somebody have seen it I would be thankful for any info!!!
Edit: I just searched for "Legends of hockey" and I found out that its a documentary, right?? Well, what I mean was a TV-show....sad, for a moment I thought I had found it, snif, snif!!

That's actually one of the greatest things about slaphot is that it's based upon a real hockey team and stories about real hockey players. All the Hanson brothers actually played in the minor leagues for years as well.Systemfel wrote:I hate hockey movies. Usually because they're pretty unrealistic and stuff.

Edit: Found a link to a DVD set of the first AND second series: http://www.sportsposterwarehouse.com/wa ... keydvd.htm
I have the original set on tapes as I bought them for my dad for Christmas many moons ago, he loved them since he'd been a big hockey fan since the fifties.

Slapshot is of course classic, but I think Miracle is probably my favorite. I can't help but get choked up in that movie, plus it's a good movie to watch that the ladies will enjoy as well.
I actually met one of the Hanson brothers. They still play hockey and participated in a charity hockey game that one of my clients put on.

I'll also add the excellent Maurice Richard. I don't know how much the film was commercially successful out of Quebec, but here, it was a smash hit
Some NHL players were in the movie, Mike Ricci (Toe Blake), Sean Avery (a NYR goon getting beaten up by the Rocket
), Vincent Lecavalier (J. Beliveau if I remember right)

Was that the animated one about the little boy who got the Maple Leafs sweater for Christmas when all his friends had Maurice Richard jerseys? I have a vague memory of seeing that while on vacation one year many moons ago...crosby87 wrote:I don't think it was a movie, but I liked a show called 'The Sweater'.

^^^ We used to watch The Sweater during indoor recesses in elementary school. Minty, you're right on, that's the one with the poor French Canadian kid getting the Leafs jersey. Something about a screwup when his mom ordered it from the Hudson's Bay Company.Minstrel wrote:Was that the animated one about the little boy who got the Maple Leafs sweater for Christmas when all his friends had Maurice Richard jerseys? Only in Canada would kids want to watch this during recess.

Cheers.
