Jack Johnson Traded!

Post by thecoolstuff »

along with O. Tverdovsky to LA Kings for T. Gleason and E. Belonger...
This is a rough deal for the Canes IMO. But apparently the Canes wants to win now instead of later.

We get rid of an overpaid defenseman and a prospect that didn't want to play for us and in return we get a younger more offensive version of Aaron Ward and a replacement for Matt Cullen.

Win now indeed. 8-)

He may or may not have wanted to play in Carolina. It's quite possible that the guy just wants to finish college so he'll have a degree to fall back on if his hockey career is cut short. Carolina could've waited on him and forced his hand but the real reason that this deal was made is that they needed help on D now. Plain and simple. I think LA got the better end of this deal.

Wasn't sure whether I should just have made a new thread on JMFJ, but anyways, he will play for the Kings this season as an entry-level contract is all but signed.

So do you think it was a case of JJ changing his mind or not wanting to play hockey in Carolina?

I think he's a west coast boy.

I'll enjoy Tim Gleason, Scott Walker and Josef Vasicek for Jack Johnson.

It's still not a great return right now, IMO.

i'll take the all-star defenseman over tim gleason and belanger. i loved belanger though, I do miss him on the PK and especially since our center depth sucks. but still, i'll take JJ.

I think what he does the rest of the season will be really interesting to watch. We may certainly have some better guesses as to just how this deal was... there's still no guarantees of how he'll deal with the pressure of playing against NHL players instead of NCAA players.

Special mention to Systemfel for excellent use of the search feature here btw ;)

Hopefully he plays like Anders Eldebrink tonight...and then in Vancouver and is Rob Blake, Chris Chelios, Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey and niklas Lidstrom all rolled into one in the rest of his games.

Well first off how can he be considered an all-star defenseman before he has ever played a shift in the NHL? Is this HFBoards in disguise?

Second, The trade ended up being Johnson + salary dump useless rubbish for Gleason, Walker and Vasicek.

Not so one sided when you factor all of that in.

Even if JJ doesnt reach his full potential in hte futur, the fact is that carolina received a bunch of medium player for a VERY big prospect.

It also has to be considered in context; at the time Johnson had thrice refused the Canes for signing with them and due to their long-term injury concerns with Kaberle and Stillman getting Gleason and Belanger addressed critical needs for them, not to mention what it allowed them to do at the deadline. So I'd think that the only reason the team still has a shot at making the playoffs this year is due to this deal. So... :dunno: It's certainly not cut and dry

Johnson logged 18:45 of ice time and was -1 in his professional debut.

And got absolutely hammered...by one Jan Bulis. Now that is not exactly awe inspiring. But eh....one game. Jack will be a star for years to come. He is big, can skate, can pass, and can shoot. Looked good on the pp for the Kings last nite.

Jack Johnson as I imagine his "2 Minutes..." in the back of the Hockey News will look like:

What was your "Welcome to the NHL" moment?

When I got submarined by Jan Bulis.
