Have you seen any NHL preseason games?

Post by Minstrel »

We just had our first locally televised Blackhawks game last night \:D/ \:D/ \:D/ man it's so good to have hockey back on TV!

I was wondering if anyone else has seen any NHL preseason games and what they thought of the game since there is such a focus on "The New NHL". How did the penalty calls affect the game? What did you notice about the new rules?

I'll tell you what I thought:

First the new rink layout; it is very noticeable that the net has been moved back toward the end boards by two feet and that the blue line has been moved toward center ice by two feet as well. The offensive zones look huge. An interesting comment by Troy Murray (former Hawk and now color man) on a powerplay was that if you are playing 'the point' out by the new blueline you are no longer a real threat. Being four feet further back from the net a shot is much less dangerous. That will be interesting if defenseman habitually man the blue line as they've been taught on powerplays or if they will move down in the zone more to make their shots more dangerous.

With the omission of the red line when determining a two-line pass I did see a few long breakout passes that would have been 2-line passes last year. I guess that's a good change in spirit seeing the pace quickened. With all these things though I don't know how much it will actually do what it's intended to do once players/coaches find their way around/take advantage of them. No matter what though those big offensive zones will be a factor all year.

In the game I saw between the Wild and the Hawks there was an ugly stretch in the middle of the 2nd period where there were calls right and left with five players in the box at one point. Other than that though it didn't really disrupt the game and I felt like it wasn't much different from what an average 2003-2004 game was like. I guess I have mixed feelings on that...

I did like that there were things called that wouldn't have been called before. There were several interference calls directly off of faceoffs where it's become the norm for people not taking the faceoff to grab and impede the opposing player after the puck is dropped. There was a call for a defenseman putting his stick between a forward's legs as he skated away from the boards and a call for putting the stick around an opposing player's waist from behind to slow him down.

I didn't see a game called as strictly as they've been saying it would be. I guess there have been games with 30 or more penalties called. That's troublesome to me though because while I don't want to see 30 penalties called it does seem maybe they are backing off/down from that already and it's only a week into the preseason. We'll see.

I'm not sure if they're showing any games on Channel 5 in the UK any more. Maybe I won't be seeing any hockey at all :(

Channel 5 are showing games this season - just not preseason ones. NASN is showing the Bruins-Rags game this weekend so that will be the first one I see.

Thank goodness for that \o/
I like how Channel 5 covers these sorts of things that are somewhat of a niche.

They're pretty good, except I got NASN before they announced that C5 would show anything. Still, you can't watch too much hockey, and C5's pundits annoy me.

Yeah I'm looking forward to teh NHL season and I have now definetly picked a team to support. Since I passed their arena when I was on holiday 2 years ago its gotta be the mighty ducks.

I will reserve judgement on rule chnages untill I have seen a few games in action. Will take a bit of tiem getting use to it and not shouting at the tv saying its offside when they have taged out. I think some of the new rules were introduced in the uk a few years ago eg no more 2 line pass.

One thing i strongly disagree with is going to a shootout s. I think it will ruin things and is more for the casuals and not teh real fans. It is done in the DEL like that but at least in DEL they get 3 points for regulation win adn only 2 for shootout win. Though its bad in teh DEL that there isn't even any over tiem in teh regular season. Also in teh DEL play offs they only have one perios of OT then a shootout which is a harsh way to lose the last game of the series.

Will there be shootouts in the play offs in the NHL. I could accept it in the play offs maybe if say after 3 periods of ot then go to shootout but really you can't beat the finger bitting of teh next goal wins teh stanley cup thats what its all about and shoot out to decide that would be very very tough.

Hopefully the new Capping will make it a more even ground obviously teh bigger teams will still have an advantage as it is turnover based i think to a certain extent.

Cmon the Ducks

Fully agree that the worst rule change in hockey ever was the introduction of shootouts, but there are definitely no shootouts in the NHL playoffs (for now)

The shootout is all Bettman's fault in my opinion. He is obsessed with making the game more flashy or more popular/marketable instead of understanding the game and what would make it better.

The shootout is an abomination. I honestly feel like there is not even a need to explain why. just like there is no need to explain why killing someone is wrong. Yes, that's how strongly I feel about it.

My first official dose of this exciting new shootout (they are doing it after every preseason game) is that we had a good match, a spirited overtime and then the teams went to their benches. A few people came back out and helped the goalies cool down by going back to the part of practice that nobody sees unless they show up to games really early. Wow, that was so exciting I haven't slept since. All that adrenaline coursing through my veins.

The most boring thing I've ever seen on ice.
