Can you get a player to play into his mid-40s?

Post by laskey 16 »

Hi all. I was wondering whether or not it is possible to use the editor(s) to make a player who will not retire in his late 30s, but instead play on to his early-mid 40s. I have several players at the 35/36 age who retire after 1 or 2 years of the game, but I would like to have them play a little longer. I figured there must be some kind of way to do this, as Chris Chelios plays at least the 1st season. Thanks in advance.

Chelios is a monster ;) Very few players are still in shape to play at NHL level in their 40s.

That being said, i don't know anything about the editor and so can't help you on this one  But generally the retirement ages in the game are reallistic, so i don't see any need of changing this :dunno:

Thanks for the reply. I guess you've heard about Chelios and his crazy 'Sauna Bike' workouts, the man is a legend. I hope he can play on to 50 or so like Gordie Howe, and if he keeps himself in such a good shape and can still play then why not. The reason I want to change the retirement age is that one of my favourite players always retires after year 1, but I want him to carry on.

Actually no, although now I want to do that. Tony Hand is god. No, actually it's Ron Shudra for the Sheffield Scimitars. I've even tried using the extra config file to set his retirement date in 2011 or 2010, but even when I do that (and it works- it shows up on his player profile that he will retire at the date I set) he still retires after Year 1. ](*,)

I think the retirement age is accurate for NHL standard players, but uses this "average age" across all nations.

In GB, it is common for players to go on to mid-40s if they are good enough, especially as there are so many player/head coaches in real life.

In HA, player/head coach is not possible, and so players retire to become head coaches alone in the GB leagues.

Yes Chelios was solid in rl this year and is decent as a 6th defenseman in ehm, but has anyone else noticed that most star players are very productive at the age of 38-39 still?. Saw a 38 year old Marian Hossa have 110 points for another team in my latest game and at 41 forsberg is still be close to a ppg player. I know their psysical stats drop rapidly when close to 40 but they still they manage apperently.
Not that I mind this, since in rl sakic had 100 points at 37 and the trend is players are in better and better shape, but cant help wonder if they are bit too effective at that age.

So does anyone know how to edit a player to play into his mid 40s?

Short answer, no.

Possible options:

Make him a player coach with as long a contract as you can.
Make sure he plays regularly so he is less keen on retiring/leaving.
Improve certain mental attributes in the editor (loyalty, professionalism etc) this may have nothing to do with it but might make him more likely to see out his player/coach contract.
Win the league, might make him want to play on. Might make him want to retire on a high though?

Thanks for the ideas.

Maybe you could try the savegame editor.

Find out which date he normally annouces his retirement. Save 2 days before the date. Go into the editor and set his age to 30. Load the game and sim a week. Save the game. Go back into the editor and set his age back to the correct age. Load the game again.

Don't know if it would work, but it would be worth a try :)

Thanks El Quapo, that sounds like it should work  . As I write this I am simming a new game on vacation, with the player's Natural fitness, determination, team work, loyalty, ambition etc etc stats all improved and having edited his contract to run out in 2011. If I get to the point where he retires I'll do what you have suggested. Great idea. :-D

Tony Hand's physical stats drop like a bomb in the 2nd season, usually followed by his retirement

Yeah, nearly all veterans experience the same thing, regardless of their ability IRL. :thdn: Still, a little editing can solve that problem!

A little editing would only lead onto a lot of editing, for me, which would only lead onto Tony having 20's for everything.... :-D

Have you managed to stop him from retiring? Would be cool if it was possible :)

So far so good! :-D I'm now part way through Year 2 and Mr. Shudra is still going strong. Usually he goes after Yr 1, but I think editing his mental stats and natural fitness stat have meant he wants to carry on. Got a feeling that after Yr 2 he will try to quit on me, so if he does I'll try what you said, El Quapo.

Update - end of year 2 and a 40 year old Shudra still unretired. Looks like editing mental stats works.

I've never had any big problem with getting players to play far into their 40's on my teams.

I actually ran a team in the CHL, the Rage. I drafted a player or atleast signed him after his juniors were done and over with. He stayed with the team from the time he was 20 until he was 45.

He was a very solid and cheap defensemen.

I also was able to retire his number with the team as well, which was not something that I had done previously.

I just simmed to 2017...I don't knw why but I did. Chris Pronger still playing at 41 in the NHL, Patrick Elias at 40 in Czech Republic, and there was a 44 year old guy playing in Finland...cannot recall his name though.

Great job for doing that, batdad. I know that someone around here will appreciate that personally. I don't, because I know that players will already play far into their 40's. I think it honestly depends on how you run your time, who they play with, and just if you offer them enough money or not.
