That's a pretty weird trade IMO. Stupid move to dump Pitkänen like that, he's still young and was even mentioned in the Norris debate back in 05-06 (if I remember correctly). And on top of that the Oilers get a 3rd? :-?

Schneider to the Ducks. Apparantly this deal was done as scott neidermeyer phones up this morning saying he was 'leaning' towards retirement. Have to say he would be a huge loss. Ducks of course say in spite of schneider deal scott is very welcome back next season. Would love to see Scott Neidermeyer in London ah well guess the guy wants to go out on a high. Will be interesting to see what Selanne does wonder if his decision have a link with scott. Though I dunno if there is much talk of teemu retiring but certainly may be possible. Really hope he stays if we lose scott and him that be huge loses. Teemu is getting older but think he has at least another year in him and he is playing some great hockey and the younger guys need another year working behind him.
As for Schneider he ain't scott neidermeyer but the guy does bring a winning pedigree. A two year deal I think is reasonable. We still got Pronger though. I feel ok about it there is some good young players so the ducks should hopefully be up there challenging for good while.

Detroit though I think have done well getting rafalski in and trying to bring the average age of their defence down.

Wow I can't believe the Rangers, landing both Gomez and Drury! I bet Buffalo is really kicking themselves now.

I said this during all the Pitkanen trade rumours during the past few weeks, and I'm still standing by it:

If the Flyers trade Pitkanen, and don't win the cup immediately, Holmgren must be fired.

So, here it is... Joni's gone now, and if the we bomb this year, I'm calling for Holmgren's head.

EDIT: ...Especially after all this ambition he's throwing down.

Rangers are on fire today. Flyers are dimwits...

And tsn.ca is stating that Scott Niedermeyer is going to announce his retirement tonight. Oh boy....

One hell of a whacko day. Briere getting that much money, no movement is completely idiotic. Betcha the Coyote Briere shows up in Philly...

That move more than the Pitkannen one makes me think Holmgren is not long for the philly world. It appears he is basically Clarke jr.

Hm. Well, I'll tell you what - I'm a little bitter that Montreal hasn't picked anyone up yet. What's the deal Bob? Not willing to overpay for Smyth or Briere, but you'll spend big dollars on Markov....

Kariya to the Blues, 3 years but the value hasn't been released yet.

In the wake of losing Kariya, the Preds replaced him with signing Jed Ortmeyer for 2 years at $1.5M

Kariya at $18 million for 3 years to the Blues, as per TSN

And a good new for Ducks' fans: Niedermayer not officially retired!

Cory Sarich to the Flames! for 5 years and $18 millions. Along with Phaneuf, Aucoin, Warrener and Regehr, it sounds good for the Flames' defensive corp. May help Kipper to re-sign during the season if he's well protected :-k

Man! There was all sorts of craziness yesterday. I still can't believe NY got both Drury and Gomez! I guess that puts an end to all the M****** trade rumors. Nice work for Edmonton to be able to get Pitkanen. They've wanted him for a while and they finally got the deal done. Colorado added a couple of great players in Hannan and Smyth. Toronto added Blake.

I was hoping the Bruins would've made runs at Hannan and Blake. I know they don't have much cap space to work with but there were rumors of them trimming some salary by dealing Murray to the Oilers. It's not like I want to see Murray go but if it could've facilitated signing those guys... I would've been all for it.

Hannan or Blake would have been better choices for the Bruins than trading for Fernandez,no doubt

Preissing is the steal of this UFA season. The dude is so underrated it is scary. How the hell could Ottawa let him go?

Preissing was one of the gems out there. Anyone, including Vancouver would have benefitted from getting him. He is reliable, can kill penalties and score and makes the best choice for getting the puck out of his own end 95% of the time. He has helped Meszaros and Volchenkov tremendously. More so than Redden or Phillips have. I am in shock Murray let him go from Ottawa. It just makes no sense. he is sooooo solid.

It might have something to do with the fact that Redden is eating up 6 million in payroll and earning maybe half of it...or that Redden's value to the team is under-estimated by us and recognized by Murray OR Murray over-appreciates him. But more likely is the fact that Spezza and Heatley (and the aforementioned Redden) are all UFAs next year.

I think the steal of the UFA season (red-tinted glasses on) goes to the Flames for Sarich ;) The guy is almost unknown having toiled in Tampa but brings an awful lot, including youth, to any club that doesn't try to score 7 goals a game. More seriously though, the Avs getting Hannan for 4.5 million is highway robbery, especially after Markov got that ridiculous pay raise. Hannan would eat Markov (and everyone else on the Habs defense corps) for breakfast. Colorado is an easy pick for the playoffs now.

I've said all season long that the owners are going to ruin what they fought for with their idiocy and lack of self-control. 7.36 million for a guy who scored 13 goals and 60 points writes it in stone. Scott Gomez is now making as much as/more than JOE THORNTON. Sickness. 7 mil for Drury I get, but come on. And then guys like Sheldon Brookbank get next to nothing! Brookbank can change the way a season goes for a club, he's such an impact player. 5 mil for Brookbank is a no-brainer but I guess he's willing to take less because he REALLY, REALLY wants to play with Jason Chimera. Look out for the Blue Jackets now.

1. Of course it has to do with those 3 UFA's next season. That is obvious. The point I was making was that Preissing is more underrated than anyone. The things he brings to a team are incredible.Which is why Lombardi went after him. He has had him before (SJ) and knows what he brings to the table. Redden is highly overrated, although is a capable defenseman, when he wishes to play the game. Not going to hurt the Sens that much losing Preissing as their d is pretty solid. I just feel that Murray should have kept Preissing and let Phillips walk or deal him. Maybe Redden too... Heatley will not likely go back to Ottawa anyway.

2. Sarich is known to me. Guy is a good defenseman, but he, like Stuart, Hale et al is not going to make the difference in Calgary. He is not that good, but is a bit of an upgrade at least in his own end, over Hamrlik.

3. No comments on Keenan? Still think that this is hilarious he is in Calgary...

4. Yes Colorado will be good. But they still have no goaltending, which is the one thing you and I agree on. Goaltending is a necessity. If they are counting on Jose to come back and play real well, they are in big trouble in Colorado. They did well with Hannan and with Smyth and have clearly become a playoff contender again.

5. I really don't get the point on Sheldon Brookbank...what do you mean? I assume you are being sarcastic...

6. And yep...very typical owners/managers throwing away money (Philly, NYR). Cept for the Oil...what the heck is this rumour about Nylander getting 5.5 mill per year. That is completely loony. And I don't get 7 mill for Drury....that is nutso. He is good, but come on.....

Makes you wonder doesn't it. Obviously we don't know what's going behind the scenes and maybe Chia made an offer, but come on, even 3.5m p/a is a good deal for Preissing.

Nylander signed with the Caps. Agree with you on Drury. Do they Rangers even have a #2 Dman, let alone a #1 ?
