Nope, the smilie changes shouldn't have affected your ability to edit posts in any way at all.
Is this problem just present in one forum or is it all of them. I have a good idea what the problem is and it most probably only regards the new Competition, etc. forums.

Was it just the Fantasy Hockey Forum? I checked the permissions of all the forums and for some reason, that Forum only allowed admins to edit posts. Now you should be able to edit your own posts
