Aebischer to the Coyotes, good signing, can be a number 1, i think he has the ability, but he can't show it, he was being compared to much to Roy, Impossible task to follow that guy, but now hes gotta follow Cujo

Somebody told me yesterday that Dion Phaneuf was headed to Ottawa in exchange for Jason Spezza. Obviously it's rubbish, not to mention that none of the rumour mongers in the hockey media have even breathed a word of it. Still, I'm wondering if anyone else has heard anything...

Tanguay-Spezza-Iggy.

I could run with that. Even Keenan could maybe run with that.

But it'll never happen. Unless, there's a shift in the time/space continuum and Spezza doesn't want to re-sign in OTT next summer. Oh, and Phaneuf would have to want out of Calgary like crazy as well.

Buddy's rationale was that Sutter isn't happy with how Phaneuf goes about his off-ice business (recall the pic of he and Kipper smoking). Seems to contradict the fact that Sutter probably has a shrine to Dion in his bedroom...and the fact that trading a tremendous future asset for a guy whose contract is expiring and will command Iggy-or-more dollars while there's still a top-tier goalie to sign doesn't make an awful lot of sense. Unless Sutter's job rides on a Cup win this year. Which it doesn't.

BE careful T-cleese. Eklund may be watching us. Or is your buddy Eklund? When you see him, can you see his face or is it all blacked out in shadows?

**Disclaimer** The guy in question was just some random at a poker table. I would not freely associate with those who think Dion Phaneuf is going to be/should be traded.

I assumed that he heard the rumour from Darren Dreger, until I checked tsn.ca and couldn't find that little weasel making any such claims....I think I'm going to start a running count of how many times that guy tries to break a big story based on hearsay and is proven completely wrong.

Meanwhile, has the Chris Clark signing slipped through the cracks (haven't had a chance to look back over the posts)? He's so under-rated he makes Kevin Bieksa look like Scott Gomez. I know he plays with Ovechkin but Clark is integral to that team in the future. Great signing.

Don't let the door hit you in the rear on the way out, Yashin! :-D

I don't know how he honestly expected to get paid serious money in the NHL after how he performed under his old big money contract.

Good acquisition for Yaroslav! :p But this should be in the europe off-season thread, as Alexei is no longer a NHLer...

I don't think he'll be missed in NA.

Was that Pitkanen deal just the qualifying offer? Are they able to start working on a long term deal later (like January, IIRC)? If the Oilers only get him under a 1 year deal, I'd laugh if somebody signed him to an offer sheet next July! :-D

What a weird deal this is:

Thanks to Fishi for pointing it out to me in another thread...

Bruins send Toivonen to St Louis for Carl Soderberg

To me, it makes little sense for either team, but eh...what do I know? Boston does have Rask, and Fernandez and Thomas..so I guess Toivonen became expendable. Just never realized Carl Soderberg was worth enough to get a strong goalie prospect. Or do people think Hannu is gonna be a bust now?

Well, Söderberg is a strong center prospect from what I've seen. So I guess it should be a pretty fair trade.

We could use a center. If the NHL decides in 2010 that you're allowed to play with 18 forward lines we'll be the ones laughing.

The Islanders re-signed Chris Simon to a one year deal for 800,000. Garth Snow said that Simon gave the team "a little bit of everything" last season. Simon can be a valuable asset to the team but given his standing around the league at this point I don't know how great a signing it was...

He has 5 games left. And Simon is actually a pretty good guy who made a stupid stupid mistake. Hopefully, he learned from it, unlike other boneheads. But yeah...not sure what he has left any way.

I really don't like this trade. Chia gave up on Hannu too early. When Hannu didn't take take the starting goaltender job last season, I think Chia decided he was gone. It was just a matter of finding a deal that he wanted. I think this one is going to come back and bite us in the future. Hannu is still young and I think he's going to have a great career. Sure, Rask is the future superstar but why put all your eggs in one basket?

I've heard Soderberg is very talented but didn't want to accept a demotion to the AHL, so he went back to Sweden. I really don't like that. He needs to get used to the North American game. We had another prospect who did that, Zinovjev (or however it's spelled). He did the same thing. Now he's playing out his career in Russia. Anyhow, when Soderberg was playing in Sweden, he seriously injured one of his eyes. He's supposed to be ready to come back and play but he doesn't have perfect vision in one eye anymore. I really hope that doesn't hurt his game.

Overall, I would've rather they used Hannu to get us a good #2 or #3 defenseman. We need defense before we need another center. Fortunately, I hear Soderberg can play wing too.
