EA Sports NHL 08 / 2K Sports NHL 2K8

Post by B. Stinson »

I find it hard to believe that you can call NHL 07 cookie cutter seeing as how it brought something that you can't find in any other hockey game on the market with the right analog stick is your stick control setup.
But the fact remains that any EA-made game can be identified within seconds of seeing it. Madden's a good example - When I see commercials for 2008, I always laugh because their graphics still look exactly the same as all previous games, and their animations are still the same basic stuff as all previous versions. The only changes are the changes produced by the console's capabilities, not EA effort or innovation. It's almost like they have a master template for basic stuff, and they simply build all their games from that while altering things a bit to be a little more specific to the sport. But they never seem to swing too far from the basic template.

Danny, check out NHL 08 this year.

I heard they focused on the AI and revamped skating this year so it should be even better than last years.

Oh I will check it out, I'll check out both for sure and give it some time but experience has taught me that EA is great at marketing (applies for their other games as well) but their games rarely (and pretty much never in the last couple of years) live up to the expectations. I've read previews but I usually prefer to play a game for at least 2 weeks to form an opinion. So yeah I'm not saying 08/2k8 will be rubbish but I'm not getting my hopes up anymore. Since both games have a lot of sliders which allow to tweak the gameplay all the demo movies are pretty much useless as well because you never know how the testing person set it up.

The only game I'm really looking forward to this year is GTA :p

They've actually completely redone all of the skating and hitting animations for this years game.

They also improved the A.I. of the goalies and defenders as well as the forwards so that everything feels more like hockey.

The NHL and NCAA Football games are the only ones put out by EA worth playing, IMO.

ye i heard they have changed a lot of the gameplay, they hav also added in 1st person views from the goalies, so it is more realistic if you choose to take control of them. Sounds like theyve copied the 2K series, but i love goalie control, any news as to when these will both be released in England, i hear start of september for both in USA, i might jus get it imported

My opinions changed so much recently that its crazy when it comes to this. I was a big EA fan for awhile, then switched to the 2k series. Last year I got both (got EA's because of Ovechkin :joy: ) and enjoied NHL07 more thank 2k7. I dunno if its cause I played it more (have 07 on PS2 and PSP so i played it on my PSP a lot) or just because the gameplay was better. This year EA's game looks to be a lot more fluid than 2k8 so I'll be getting NHL08 on PS3 rather than 2k8.

Anyone heard anything about a 2008 PSP hockey game? :help:

Oh and sorry Danny, GTA has been pushed back to 2008  Gamespot Article

EA make the best hockey games out of the two in my opinion. Nowhere near perfect, but I have usually bought both EA and 2K NHL games and always preferred EA. NHL 08 is going to be amazing this year, I so wish I owned a PS3. Might have to make an investment when the price goes down...:-k I was on hfboards.com looking at what was going on and the create a player/edit zone thing is incredible! You can choose players' kit in amazing detail, even what curve and flex their stick is! I think NHL 08 is easily going to be the best of the two this year.

What I was looking at:

I will probably end up getting NHL08 on the PC this year, I don't have a console so 2K8 is out of the question

Well, I had to vote for EA Sports, because I play them since.....bufff, I cant remember...since I had the Commodore 64 and then Commodore Amiga (that was a looooooong time ago).

I still like the football games (NFL 07 is pretty good) and I still play MVP05 (EA has lost the licence for the MLB, so they cant bring out a new game for MLB, but I play the mods), but I think that the Dinasty mode for the NHL games from EA stinks since they changed it in....think it was in NHL 04, dont remember...

2k has stolen a lot of clients to EA because EA simply thought they had no competition...

Also, the EA online feature is pretty weak....they can shutdown a server from one day to other without notify it to anybody (happend to us NASCAR NSR players).

So my vote has to go to EA because they are around longer, but lately 2k has gained a lot of terrain.

Dont know if I have to give a chance to NHL08??? Maybe I will...

Yeah, NHL 08 is with the create mode, although looking at 2k8, the new shooting moves and goalie saves look awesome, spin-a-ramas and the forsberg move, and goalies making all new saves, looks pretty good, im torn at the moment, argh, i hate choices

It is more group orientated in general but I think it depends on what games you get. The Wii Sports you get with it is more fun playing with someone else but I still fun playing boxing and baseball by myself. Ghost Squad sounds like a good single player game.

Top of my list to get is Tiger Woods 2008 - the ability to swing a "club" was one of the main attractions for me getting a Wii. Other games that sound promising are Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (aka Winning Eleven), SEGA Superstar Tennis, Major League Baseball 2008, Lego Star Wars (controlling a light sabre with the WiiMote + Lego sounds like a good laugh to me!), and Mario Kart Wii. You can find reviews/previews on http://wii.ign.com

As for hockey, it seems is the only one out there (it's being released in January, I believe). After seeing [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fYHzmPbQWg]this video I am doubtful whether I'd be willing to spend money on it. It seems the Kidz Sports series of games caricature players into bobble-headed kids. Apparently you can only play with six teams (all international teams). Sounds a bit rubbish to me :bs:

Alternatively you can buy NHL 06 or NHL 2k3 for the GameCube. GameCube games are compatible with the Wii so you could get your hockey hit this way. Not sure if I'd be willing to play such an outdated NHL game unless it's a real classic (although I've heard very good things about NHL 2k3 and 2k5 so maybe 2k3 would be worth it). However, I guess these games will be going cheap now. Maybe EA or 2K Games will release an NHL game next September/October for the Wii. The reviews I've read for the other EA Sports games on the Wii weren't very promising (Madden 08 is OK whereas NBA 08 and NFS plain suck!). So maybe we won't ever see a great NHL game for the Wii. Ah well, I'll just stick to golf, tennis, baseball and boxing :D

Can anyone comment on NHL 06 or NHL 2k3?

My girlfriend got her Wii for Christmas this past year. I played it just one time and not since then at all. Not that I don't like the thing or whatever, but it's not that fun to me personally.

I mean, I could see where they make their money. It would be much fun for kids that are young and into swinging around things and really getting into the game. Such as kids who do racing games, how they lean into the turns and so forth. With the Wii it becomes more realistic than fantasy when you just use the Xbox 360 controller or PS3 controller.

I myself own the Xbox 360 and enjoy it much more. With the online community, awesome games with great graphics, and it being virtually a personal computer.

You just can't beat that at all.
