Batdad's 2007 NHL entry draft. Or should I say..Phoenix GM Evgeni Davydov's NHL entry draft.
Round 1.
Well, Hamill went 1st, Gagner, Esposito, Kane, Couture rounded out the top 5. I pick at 15 and 29. Slim pickings by the time it got to me, at least in terms of what I am looking for. Had a whole bunch of d-men staring me in the face. I really wanted a forward. My d-core is young and I kind of like alot of the guys. Available for me to look at.
Petrecki (ranked 13), #14 Van Rymsdyk, Ryan Kerr, both Bashkirovs, Turris (29), Ellerby, Pither, Hickey, Cherepanov, Seleznev. I really like the look of Cherepanov, but it would be going off the chart. And when I have another pick at 29? Why bother.
With the 15th pick in the 2007 NHL entry draft the Phoenix Coyotes select...from Clifton Park NY...defenseman Nick Petrecki. . Petrecki is tough. He always gives it his all. He plays a style similar to Craig Rivet, and basically bullies opponents out of the way. He can make a beauty outlet pass as well. The sky is the limit for this guy. He already has NHL calibre speed.
At 29...I sat back and watched as most of the guys listed above were chosen. I was really interested in Michael Repik or Zach Torquato. Alas, they went at 27 and 28 respectively. There was really no choice left. I had to take the big man. From Omsk with Love. Welcome to Phoenix Mr. Cherepanov.
Alexei Cherepanov has great wheels. I love the Russian flash he has. He has a quick release shot, and reminds me alot of Petr Sykora..except better with the puck. this guy is going to be great playing either side of the ice. Mueller and him could be a great combo for years to come.
2nd round
Oilers pick is #41. Time to take a risk. Taking a d-man in the first round and Cherepanov, we think it is time to fill out the left side of the ice a bit. Really all we have is a rapidly aging Mike York and an over utilized, miscast Sjostrom. So...available was Casey Pierro-Zabotel. Zabotel is off the Michigan Tech next year, but should be ready to make the leap to pro hockey the year after that. He is a longer term project, but has great speed, and plays real smart. He moves the puck very well. he likes the banging, and is physically strong. The guys tell me he is a little better than Bates Battaglia. Looking at his videos, and having seen him once, I think he could be more like Gary Roberts. A strong power forward.
At #59 the Coyotes took a bit of a gamble. Players like Ryan Wilson were available. But my scouts really like a guy out of Kootenay. An older player (20 next season) who also plays the blueline. they think he could really blossom into a top 3, two way defenseman. He can play the power play, and kill penalties. Chad Greenan...make your way to Phoenix, and welcome to the club.
With no 3rd rounder, we sat around and watched some great potential get picked. Bye bye Ryan Wilson. he is off to Minnesota. Akim Aliu (toughness personified) is off to the Devils. Jon Blum gets to go home to California, as grumpy old Burkey picked him. Dana Tyrell and Brett Maclean..two guys we had our eyes on up front were taken.
So at pick #100...we went a bit off the board. There is a 20 year old out there who looks like he could really develop quickly. In fact I bet he plays in the top 2 lines in San Antonio and leads the team in scoring next year. From the Sudbury Wolves the Phoenix Coyotes are proud to select with the #100 pick of the draft...Center Kevin Baker. Kevin is an overager...not taken in last year's draft as some were scared off by his past knee injury. However, we have had hom throughly checked out and all looks good. Kevin led the Wolves in points last season, and was their leader in the playoffs as well. At 5'11" 185 lbs he has decent size as well. He looks to be good on faceoffs and reminds the guys a bit of Yanic Perrault. We need face off guys in Phoenix.
Now we watch a bit again. Bye bye to the only goalie we would even have thought of drafting Kyle Gajewski. Bye bye to ERic Doyle and Kevin Shattenkirk. Patrick White went just before we were to pick at 148, and at 147 Colton Yellow Horn was stolen from under our noses. So at #149 I picked my 2nd BCHL'er of the draft: From the Penticton Vees, the Coyotes are proud to select Winger Evan Trupp. Evan is off to school next season as well. He is going to No Dak. A great program there. Especially if Toews sticks around for one more year. Man..will Evan learn a ton from him!! Small and speedy, Evan is a playmaker. He reminds my scouts alot of Andrew Brunette. If he is half of that he will be a steal this late in the draft.
at the end of the 6th round there is not much left out there. Time for a gamble. Will he boom or will he bust? WEll..one scout thinks he is a 1st liner, one thinks he cannot make the NHL and the rest fall somewhere in the middle. Here is to hoping that at #179 Cory Tanaka of the Belleville Bulls a small Shifty centre with an attitude can bring his game to the big leagues. Tanaka reminds my guys of Sean Avery and mark Smith. A couple of jerks if I ever saw them. Hopefully Tanaka can stir it up.
So that is it for the 2007 draft. I think we did real well.
To summarize
#15 Nick Petrecki Omaha Lancers (off to Boston College) LD/RD
#29 Alexei Cherepanov Omsk Juniors RW
#41 Casey Pierro-Zabotel Merrit Centenniels (BCHL) off to Michigan Tech LW
#59 Chad Greenan Kootenay Ice WHL LD
#100 Kevin Baker Sudbury Wolves OHL C
#149 Evan Trupp Penticton Vees BCHL (off to North Dakota) LW/RW
#179 Cory Tanaka Belleville Bulls OHL C

It's funny how each person's draft goes so differently. Here are where your picks went in mine...batdad wrote: So that is it for the 2007 draft. I think we did real well.

heh. I will get where yours went in a minute.
But Greenan is really a gamble. A big one. 2 scouts like him, 2 did not. So I dunno.
Sakic was just signed by the Thrashers in my game. Lose Foppa to UFA so sign Sakic...makes sense eh? Joe must figure no way he is getting to the final if he plays in the West with me around!!
Okay so your guys:
Alex Plante went #9 to Florida (you took him at #12)
Viktor Tikhonov went UNDRAFTED (you took him at #28)
John Hughes went #62 to Islanders (you took him at #54)
Daniel Lombardi went #110 to Devils (you took him at #58)
Evgeni Kurbatov went #73 to Canes (you took him at 106)
Artem Gordeev went UNDRAFTED (you took him at 148)
Dmitri Potapkin #96 to Canes (you took him at 178)
So yeah the variation is hilarious. I mean one of your first rounders went undrafted in my game! My guys rate him as junk. And I hate to say this..I had him once with good numbers way back when in a challenge...and he stunk up the building. Hopefully not the case for you. (I think I took Tanaka that game too, and he sucked too)

I had never taken Tikhonov before and he looked pretty good here but there's always the chance he could turn out junk. All 6 of my scouts rate him pretty much the same though. They say he's got 2nd line potential. Most say he's like Demitra but one says he's a more talented version of Milan Kraft. So that's a little worrisome. I've got him on the farm team in San Antonio and in 8 games so far he has 4G 4A. Not a bad start!
Gordeev is one of those guys that always gets overlooked. He's turned out pretty good at the AHL level in past games I've played. I never got so far as bringing him into the NHL though. I've got him with our ECHL affiliate right now. He's got 2 points in 4 games. I'll keep him there for the season and then maybe bring him up to the AHL next season. He's one I'll take it slow with.
I know what you mean about Tanaka. He's one that looks good (my scouts always give him a good report) but he doesn't always turn out that way. I think it may have to do with his development. In a lot of my games he's a UFA at 20 and kind of floats around with junk teams or gets jerked around by NHL clubs. If you sign him and get him on your farm team as soon as you can, maybe he'll have a chance?

The silly Blue Jackets just offered Chicago a 1st rounder for the Bhulin hole in the wall.
Edit: trade went through so the Hawks have Thibault and Michael Garnett both signed as UFAs
The Jackets have Khabi, Boucher(UFA) and Leclaire. What the heck are these teams doing? Tallon is so slow in the head, and so is whoever is running CBJ.

So the rules seem to be making this much harder. This is a good thing!!
So far of the 7 or so people who have completed season 1...No one has won the Stanley Cup. I am the closest, losing in the final in 6 games.
Also..only 2 people completed season 1 so far as tops in the conference. B72 and I. I won the Presidents B72 did not.
Jarmac still has a shot at this. He was in first after 20, and so do several who have not yet finished season 1.
Best of luck!!!
What is really neat is the finishes so far.
We have a 14th, a 12th, a 10th, a couple of 8ths, a 6th, a couple of 4ths a 3rd and a couple of 1sts in the conference.
So cool.

Well, games 41-60 are a huge improvement over the second set of games. I still haven't run into any big injuries on the Coyotes squad, but I have someone go down every week in San Antonio. I'm not sure if it's the coach, my trainers, how hard I'm making them practice, or whether or not they're just soft ..??
One other thing that has me worried is that after every game my top 5 players either "need rest" or are "exhausted." I guess I made the critical mistake of relying on them too much during the season. For a while I had Jovanovski and Morris on my top d-pairing, #1 PP unit, #1 PK unit, and my 4 on 4 d-pairing. I even had Reinprecht and Doan on my top PK unit. Oh well, I hope I can remedy that for next year.
Niko Kapanen is a total loser in my game. He looks like he should do ok, but he's horrible. He either gets a 5 or a 6 every game and his morale is always "very low." I hate him and I can't wait until he leaves!
On a good note, Keith Yandle, whom I sent back to his major junior club, is completely dominating in the Q. He's won player of the week every week and player of the month every month. He was hurt for a few weeks, but looks to be back on track. I may give him a year in San Antonio and then bring him to Phoenix. I hope he can keep it up!
(By the way, his attributes didn't look good at the start of the season, and that's why I sent him down. This is further proof that attributes don't mean anything.)
Finally, my 2nd line of Sjostrom-Kaigorodov-Vrbata is pretty impressive. I never knew that Sjostrom could put up big points, but he's doing it at a rate of almost a point per game.
One last thing... thanks to batdad, bruins72, and everyone else that decided to try to play a challenge this way. This was exactly what the doctor ordered! (even though it's crazy hard and I'm not going to win anything, especially against batdad)

The start of our third season was pretty bad with a bunch of new arrivals and injuries to Boynton and Kaigorodov but things seem to be improving now that they have returned and I've adjusted the tactics a bit.
Carcillo is still with the team after his disaster of a rookie season since I didn't want to waive him. Luckily he seems to have taken an anger management course over the summer seeing how he has 6 PIM and a 0 +/- rating after 20 games playing fourth line RW. Maybe playing on the same line as the intended enforcer, Gratton, is good for him.
It's kind of funny seeing Mueller being in second place of the internal PIM league. He managed to get himself sent off and suspended for a game when Kaigorodov was injured. He also leads the team in game winning goals and short handed goals so he's excused.
The biggest disappointment so far this season has been Lisin but he seems to have picked up his play after I put him on a line with Hanzal and Mueller. They had a great first game together scoring all but one of our goals, let's hope we get to see more of that as the season progresses.
Here are my lines at the 20 game mark:
York-Kaigorodov-Doan
Sjöström-Pestunov-Vrbata
Hanzal-Mueller-Lisin
Gratton-Perrault-Carcillo
Jovanovski-Morris
Michalek-Boynton
Yandle-Jones

I think a lot of people tend to do that. They keep their top players out as much as possible but I wonder if it's worth it. These players are wiped out by the playoffs. They can't be quite as effective as the should be by that point. I don't play my top offensive players on the PK, even if they've got the best skills for it. It's just too much. As for my defense, that I do a little differently. I'll usually look at my defense and find 2 that are going strictly on offense and 2 that are going strictly defense. Those will play of PP1 and PK1. Then I'll find a pair that does well both offensively and defensively and they go PP2 and PK2. For even strength lines, I'll split up my top 2 guys so that they're not paired together. I'd rather play each of them with a weaker or less experienced defenseman to help cover up for their mistakes or shortcomings. Also, I try to keep my defensemen that play PP2 and PK2 in either the 2nd or 3rd defensive pairing at even strength. They might get a little too much ice time if I put them in the top pairing. I pay a lot of attention to icetime management so my guys don't get tired out too soon. Even though I do this, I usually have to switch my top line players to "General" training but January or so.timmy_t wrote: One other thing that has me worried is that after every game my top 5 players either "need rest" or are "exhausted." I guess I made the critical mistake of relying on them too much during the season. For a while I had Jovanovski and Morris on my top d-pairing, #1 PP unit, #1 PK unit, and my 4 on 4 d-pairing. I even had Reinprecht and Doan on my top PK unit. Oh well, I hope I can remedy that for next year.
