Praise for your team's players?

Post by bobmcgoo »

Has anyone worked out a good formula for when to "build up praise", "play down praise" or "decline to comment" when one of your players is praised for good performances in the media? I always just build up praise, but does anyone know when I should play it down or ignore it?

Thanks :).

I always praise them when the opportunity comes up. I can't see any reason not to. It's always one of your top players that gets that news item. Unless they're playing poorly, I don't see any reason not to go along with the praise.

If they're playing poorly and you praise them, the fans can get a bit upset that you're not instilling any discipline in the team. I believe it can unsettle players too. Conversely, if you're too harsh then you'll unsettle players.

Just answer as you would realistically. Myself, I try to play the game as "realistically" as I can.

I've neve had a player praised when he didn't deserve it, and was playing at least very well for the last few games. So, yeah, I always go along with the praise, never done otherwise.

I've see the AI GMs play down the praise many, many times, and 90% of the times the player in question gets upset ("would appreciate a little more encouragement from the GM").

I have a simple method of Praise/PLay Down/Ignore

If its a Star PLayer i always praise them.
When they play well....Praise
Average-Ignore
Bad- Praise but i discipline them for there bad play. I figure if the media reports it, its really bad and deserves a warning

If its a Depth or Below
i Decline when they are good and
Praise when they are bad Without Discipline

Because they only have short sperts every few years there is no sense to praise and no sense to yell at a guy you expect to score 6goals and hasn't scored in 20games.

Also if its a player i hate and can't give away but happens to be better then his replacement if i waived... They get Negative Comments no matter what.

Even if you don't particularily need a player for more than 20 games and 6 goals or what ever, you should still be careful about creating a negative atmosphere to the team, and pay attention to how you treat them aswell.

Morale, good or bad, is infectious. ;)

Amen to that.

...only rule or formula I use in my decisions is: play it like it's real.

Yeah, I just learned a hard lesson on how the media can really affect your roster. It's currently March 20th 2009 in the fantasy draft game I've been working on as the Pens GM. Kovalchuk is my team's biggest star (on my awesome line of Kovy-Malkin-Wolski :joy: ), and the media praised Kovy, and deservingly so since he's running away with pretty much every single offensive category award (20 points lead in league scoring, 15 goals in the RR race, tied for 1st in +/-, 9.18 AVR which leads the league for every player that's not a center). I accidentally "declined to comment" on the praise (I'm using a touchpad), and all of a sudden, 3 of my players (Coburn, Wolski, and someone I can't recall right now) demanded trades ](*,)

Hopefully a long playoff run will do some damage control...

Experienced a similar case. It's January 2020, I'm with the Oilers, Hall get's praised and recently had 7-6-10-7-8 rating. I somehow decided to play it down and baaaam. Draisaitl (2nd line center) requests a trade and Nilsson (Starting goalie) is unhappy. Sitting on top of the league table I will also hope for a cup this year (to end a 30 year drought).

To add. Both Draisaitl and Nilsson list Hall as a close friend. After a week or so, Nilsson isn't unhappy anymore, Draisaitl still want's to be traded.

Hi everyone,

Can anyone tell me if the 'wants to be traded,' player status will ever disappear? Matt Dumba got unhappy and it's been almost a season and a half..

It might go away, but a season and a half sounds like maybe it won't in this case. :dunno:

Thanks Tasku,

He was criticised by the media due to poor form, I defended him and he still requested a trade to escape the 'media spotlight.' His play was awesome during the second season and I won the Stanley Cup and he still wants a trade. The AI is offering junk deals that are unacceptable for a franchise Dman. Seems a bit unrealistic for the media to force him out..

It continues:
Nilsson; He seems to be okay again, he even signed a new 4y-deal.
Draisaitl: Since I have a young C pushing for the No 2 C spot and Draisaitl has another year on his contract left, I will trade him. Hoping for adequate return.
Hall: He's a pending UFA and has rejected all contract offers so far (never gave me a number, only listened to offers). I want to sign him longterm, I want him to be my franchise player, but it seems he's determined to go to free agency. That's sad as he has developed into one of best LW in the NHL. :(

Sometimes it unsettles them or angers the fans if someone's playing poorly.
