Condition death spiral?

Post by Francois Tremblay »

I am in the summer months and organizing pretty harsh practices. Everyone's condition went down to around 65%. I then put everyone on Resting for a few days, but they are still slowly going down. Everyone is around 61-62% now. Has anyone seen this sort of thing happen? It seems like they are not recuperating at all.

I know they will bounce back eventually, and that I should temper the practices a bit, but it's kinda scary. I just keep going from day to day and they keep going down.

A few more days later and now my team is at 59-60%. I'm starting to wonder if I haven't traumatized them to death and I might have to start a whole new team! LOL

It's because your team likes to party a lot during the summer vacation and so their conditioning goes way down from all that heavy drinking. Just joking its normal for this to happen and it will start to rise again in Sept.

It is not an issue. I have them at this all the time in the off season as I run full intense..everything. Then 2 days before camp I rest em. First day or second day of camp *not sure which* all go back to close to 100%.

Yeah, it happens every summer. It's the game's way of telling you that the guys are on vacation. If you're an NHL team you'll have your annual training camp in early-to-mid September (usually starting at or around Sept. 10th), and once that date comes around, they'll usually be around 85-90%. Then it gradually gets better, and within about a week, week and a half, everyone's up to 100% (unless injured, of course). During September you should play a few exhibition games to get your guys up to speed.

And AFAIK, your players will rest during summer whether you put their practice to 'resting' or not. I suppose it would not be prudent to put them on intensive training schedules right when they get back from their summer vacation and their condition is still under 90%.

Well if they rest..they rest well. Cause in some cases between July 1 and August 1 I have had attribute changes of over 3 (especially positioning..with goaltending on intense). Then in August I get other changes as well. So I guess they rest on the rink. :-D

I can see batdad's teams now, collapsing on the ice between each drill...

At least I bet they get good at dropping for blocked shots, even if only on accident!

So what I should do then is not train them at all until the training camp starts? It's weird because I went forward to August 12 and now everyone is going up.

I usually keep them on 'General' up to the training camp. It's light enough that they get their condition numbers up; if they're on very intensive training programs, the condition increase may be really slow (or at worst, it may not happen at all).

I put my players on intense in all training categories up until early October. If some of them drop below 70% during camp and pre-season I rest them for one day and they are back at 100%.

This is true. A while back Riz, in a discussion about this same topic at the SI boards, said that player's are automatically taken off practice during the off-season.
