Alternative text-based hockey management sims?

Post by dave1927p »

Its been a few years since Eastside has put this on 'hold', any talk of them bringing it back? it would be interesting to see the sale numbers since they canceled. Anyways, is there any talk of any text-based hockey sim by any company coming out at all? How much longer do we have to wait!?

Ive been playing Out of the Park Baseball 9 (along with EHM07) and if only EHM made it as custimizable as that game it would of made this situation alot better.

Do you think that the company that make ootp9 would ever consider making a hockey game?....maybe im just dreaming :(

Why is it that pretty much all Text-based sport simulation companys do a terrible job at advertising and spreading the word of thier product?

An OOTP version would be better than nothing, but I can't stand that game. The interface is just so amateurish and godawful.

And as far as advertising, there's very little money to go around, and the target audience is very, very small. SI couldn't afford to get commercials advertising it and stuff. This type of niche game spreads more by word of mouth than anything else.

My guess is we won't see one for a long, long time... maybe never. Hockey is just too unpopular overall. And plus, much NHL video-game success comes from the EA Sports arcade smash-em-up style, which is non-existent in text sims.

I very highly doubt it. I think they're knowledge is simply baseball. And after being dumped by SI, I would imagine their team is quite small; too small for two full games.

I see two factors:

1. The companies are small. I know SI is pretty big in Europe, but in North America they don't exist - even to most hardcore gamers. As a result, budgets are small, time is short, and most importantly: connections are very limited.

2. Text sims are a very tough genre to sell mainstream. They're naturally very slow, methodical, repetitive, and boring. They really only appeal to a small audience who has the time and patience to play them. Then for a hockey sim, you can narrow that audience even more.

Here's two old DOS games you might want to check out:

Hockey League Simulator 2 - Apparently a very good game but I've never really figured it out.
Eishockey Manager - A German ice hockey manager game. From what I remember, you can run the game with a German/English mix - there isn't a pure English language version.

Another alternative is a freeware game called Ice Hockey Manager. I've never tried it myself as it's only on version 0.3 beta and was last updated in March 2006. It might be worth checking out, though.

There's also Ice Hockey Club Manager 2005 which was being developed round about the time EHM 2004 was released. I just checked their website (the first time for about 3 years :D) and it doesn't look like it was ever released. I wonder what happened to it... Actually, looking at the developer's page (Greencode), it looks like they developed a separate hockey manager game. In fact, they had the cheek to name them EHM 05 and EHM 07! :-o Taking a closer look, it looks like their EHM 05 is in fact their Ice Hockey Manager 2005 game.

I've just found that you can buy their 2007 version on Amazon: http://www.amazon.de/Der-Eishockeymanag ... 276&sr=8-2

Although I'm not sure whether it comes with an English language option!

You're correct; OOTP's team is basically two guys from Germany who code and program everything, plus the assistance of volunteer beta testers from the community. There would be no conceivable way for them to add a hockey project.
2. Text sims are a very tough genre to sell mainstream. They're naturally very slow, methodical, repetitive, and boring. They really only appeal to a small audience who has the time and patience to play them. Then for a hockey sim, you can narrow that audience even more.
Again, you hit the nail on the head. I have several friends who are hardcore baseball fans and I tried getting them into OOTP a while back, and only managed to convince one. Slow, methodical, repetitive, and boring all describe the actual game of baseball, and even then, a text sim had no appeal to the others. Then about two years ago, I got that one friend to become a hockey fan. After teaching him what I know and taking him to games, he understands the sport well enough but still doesn't want to try EHM because it's so intimidating.

Basically, this seems to be an open source, seriously watered down version of EHM. I think this is a bit of a waste of space in writing this because it was last updated February 2006, so I imagine the developers have gotten as far as they could with it and given up. They are (or most probably, were) looking for Java programmers to help enhance the game, but I imagine they got very little or no response and so have left it as it is.

I guess some of you have heard of this before because it's been around for ages, but I just thought I'd get it out there for anyone fancying a change.
it looks like that game is strickly the swiss league.

No. They are a different game.

You could've tried another thread for this question. Like for example the TBL Roster Update thread instead? ;)

I'll wait until he actually puts something out. From what I read there it seems like he either loses interest or gets pulled away from projects often. That tells me not to hold my breath. Also, he doesn't even acknowledge EHM?

yeah i really hope he sticks with it...but He is looking for ideas too to help him out. I know alot of guys from here could be of some assistance.

He said he is going for a more customizable game then EHM, more like ootp which i think is great.

Im not a big fan of the interface but i guess you have to start somewhere and would only improve in time, that is if he choses to stick with it.

do you guys know where i can get EHM 05 for free? (legally of course) i would like to play it but since ive already bought ehm07 i don't want to buy 05 too. Is SI giving 05 away for free or are they still charging the same price for it?

As far as I'm aware, it's still retail.

You could always try to steal mine... but you'll have to pry it from my kung-fu grip first. ;)

Tut tut, Tasku. [-X :-D

Nope, it's not possible to get EHM 2005 for free - it is still commercial software. As far as I know, the old Championship Manager games from the early/mid 1990's are still commercial (i.e. not freeware) so I can't imagine SI making EHM freeware any time soon. I imagine you can buy EHM 2005 very, very cheaply, though. I've seen it for sale for about £5 (€7) in the UK. I'd highly recommend getting EHM 2007, though.

That looks quite cool

Are you part of the team that created it? Is it going to be released for free or will it cost?

Looks interesting. I'm not sure about the interface but a good part of that is probably me being used to EHM for so long. Still, it seems like it's got some potential. I'm just happy that somebody is interested in making this sort of game.
