There was a bench clearance at the Sheffield-Cardiff game with Andrew Sharp alone getting 121 PIMs:
2+2+Game Misconduct for leaving the bench
Match Penalty for Spearing
Match Penalty for Physical Abuse
5+Game Misconduct for Fighting
2+Game Misconduct for Illegal Equipment
After he speared a linesman causing him to bleed and havign a fight and throwing a water bottle at a player from the bench.Derek Campbell of the Devils also got a match penalty. Sharp will be banned for a minimum of 4 games(1 for the spearing match penalty and 3 for the physical abuse) and will most likely be banned for more.
There's some shakey footage here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBZfznIwgLk - you can see Sharp hit the lino at about 35 seconds.
There's some clearer footage here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/other_s ... 770014.stm - but it misses the spearing incident

Sharp was bought over here to do one thing only and that was to fight, and he's not even very good at that (here's him against Brett Clouthier - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tn46Ri7pTHE - he's in white), the only thing he's go going for him is the fact that he's British so he's not counted as an import. So when he gets into a fight he takes out an import from another team for 5 minutes whereas Sheffield lose a 3rd line Brit who is only going to get 2 points a season. He also likes firing pucks at the opposition during the warmup....

The thing about Sharp is he's not even good at doing what he was bought into do! He's nowhere near big enough to fight the big guys and only does mediocre against the non-tough guys.
IIRC his only win was against Paul Moran who he jumped and is about 5'8!
Sharp is out of his depth in the EIHL. In both levels of play and fighting abilty

I think I heard it is for this level of hockey.
He's a prize tool!
When you consider Voth got banned (initially) for 12 games, Sharp's got to be longer! And what about Lehman? Skating past the Cardiff fans giving them the "Wayne Kerr" sign??
After all the rubbish he's got away with over the years I wouldnt be surprised if he goes unpunished.

The penalty awarded against you of a Match for Spearing has been adjusted to a Match penalty for spearing to the Head/Neck area. As a consequence you will be served with the following suspensions:
Match Penalty = 1 game suspension
Spearing head/neck (minimum tariff) = 5 game suspension
Additional suspension after review for reckless use of the stick = 5 game suspension
Match Penalty = 1 game suspension
Physical Abuse of Official (minimum tariff) = 3 game suspension
Additional suspension after review = 5 game suspension
Total number of games 20.
The suspension takes immediate effect.
In addition to the above suspensions should you receive a penalty before, during or after a game has taken place for any of the above offences or leave the team bench to become involved in an altercation the Elite league will have no alternative but to suspend you for the remainder of the 08-09 season.

Went to the Phoenix - Steelers match tonight.
Phoenix started well in the first and caught Steelers a little bit cold, not helped by Andy Carson calling 5 hooking penalties on the Steelers in the first period. Luke Fulgham put Manchester 1-0 and it stayed that way until the 2nd.
In the 2nd period it was back to the Phoenix we know and love....
Classic powerplays of getting the puck into the offensive zone passing it around a bit, not taking any shots until the puck is cleared by Sheffield. Then skate about in the defensive zone for a little bit before repeating the process. Absolutely woeful from the forwards and Sheffield stepped up a gear. Unlike normal Phoenix games the PK did a good job for once....
Sheffield got a goal in the second from a Jeff Legue slapshot from the blueline which was a good goal. They could've had a lot more had it not been for Stephen Murphy saving 18 shots in the 2nd period. He was phenomenal tonight making some really good saves.
The 3rd started off poorly, after 45 seconds Phoenix defenceman Alex Dunn turned over the puck in the Steelers zone and Jonathan Phillips skated away on a breakaway and put Sheffield 2-1 up. Manchester then were toothless up front and Lehman in the Sheffield net was never made to feel uncomfortable and seemingly made about 1 save in the final period.
More classic Phoenix when they pulled the netminder onlyy to not take any shots and give a cheap turnover up and Ashley Tait skated up ice to put it home past a couple of defencemen lying on the floor in the final minute.
Lucas Burnett and Ryan Finnerty had a bit of a fight in the 2nd which was pretty much nothing really, couple of punches thrown, maybe 1 connected by Burnett before he took Finnerty down. Would've preferred a few more punches landed on Finnerty as I have a massive disliking for him, but he fell over 2 times whilst skating so I had a bit of a laugh.
To be fair Sheffield look very good and probably better than Belfast did when I first saw them and they're in a commanding position in the league, so it's reall their's to throw away..

The mythical EIHL Rule book comes out again:
And a clip of the incident: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=C4PLfzppcvMBelfast Giants player/coach Steve Thornton has been suspended for two games by the bmibaby Elite League with immediate effect. Following a request from the Hull Stingrays for Supplementary Discipline following an alleged tripping incident in the game between the two sides in Belfast on December 18th, league officials studied the video evidence on Christmas Eve and finalised their conclusions on Boxing Day.
In the game on December 18th, Steve Thornton became involved with Stingrays netminder Curtis Cruickshank in an incident that saw the Hull goalie sustain injury. Whilst no penalty was adjudged against Thornton on the night, the Hull Stingrays felt strongly enough to request a review of the game tape.
League officials reviewed the video evidence and judged that Thornton was guilty of Tripping Cruickshank and that the incident was serious enough to warrant a Match Suspension. Furthermore in view of the incident involving a netminder and resulting in an injury, officials have assessed the Giants player/coach an additional one game suspension.
Steve Thornton will miss the Giants games at home on December 27th versus the Edinburgh Capitals and the away game in Hull on December 28th. The suspensions also preclude him from appearing on the team bench and acting as bench coach.

Here's one from another angle, where you actually see that he stick out his leg to trip the goalie:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=pwzY48mSq ... re=related
As it is a player injury and it really seems to be intentionally as he sticks his leg out even though he has to do to turn, but he could have wait to turn aft that he had skated passed the goalie, so a match ban isn't wrong according to me, but a two games is a harsh call by the league.

Both of the Nottingham - Sheffield game attracted 7,000 fans to them this weekend which is a great achievement for a minority sport in the UK.(apparently 7,125 turned up to the Friday game and 7,128 turned up to the saturday game)
A good weekend for the Steelers and the Phoenix and Belfast didn't seem to miss Thornton that much.
Hull are now bottom of the league after they lost to Basingstoke.
