Other than becoming the national team GM and picking them yourself, you're only hope is that they're good enough to make it.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend holding your breath. Unless they're a top prospect for their country, they won't be called-up. Though, with that being said, the lower countries should provide the best hope, since their pool of players is limited in the game, so they'll likely call-up anyone they can... as opposed to deep countries like Canada who can afford to pick only the best.

Re: reply
You get a chance whenever the current GM is fired. Then you can apply, and hope they hire you.MKoivuFan wrote:How do you get a chance to become the National GM like how often does that happen?
However, Canada and US will be open often, since they only hire temporarily. Expect to see them looking for a GM at the start of just about every event.

I don't think the specific team and your record matter, instead it's your reputation. As you win games, etc, you earn a reputation and they evaluate you against that. Typically i've found if you are an NHL GM you have the ratings to get these jobs.
In my experience, US/Canada typically pick non-NHL Gms, depending on the competition, I assume because you should be focusing on your NHL team during those times, but since the other nationalities hire their GMs permanantley you can get those jobs.
Also, keep in mind there are seperate positions for the U-20 and the main team, if your goal is to get your players into the WJC, you'll want to apply for the Under 20 position.

After my 2nd season as GM I applied and was named GM of the U.S. U-20 team and it was pretty cool selecting from the pool of players who was going to make up the squad. Plus I got to stick 2 promising draft picks on the squad. I ended up leading an undermanned, but gritty U.S. team to the gold over Canada. Next season I was hired again but the U.S. finished a distant third. I got fired and despite applying a few times since then I've not gotten the call. The U.S. is now in the WJ relegation pool, so personally I think I deserve another shot, but oh well... not my decision!

From what I remember and from what I understand, you can pick anyone who is eligible to play for that country. So if you wanted, you could load it with all your prospects and this being a game, you don't have to answer to any other irate GMs for playing favorites!MKoivuFan wrote: With u as the gm of the U-20 can you pick anyone you want or only a certian players... I found it tough when you get down to the last few spots to decide which players to take. I tried for a balanced team by adding some grit as opposed to all flash and skill. It suited me well, but I imagine with a team like Canada it's an embarrassment of riches to choose from. The U.S. had only a handful of no-brainers. Good luck!

Does anyone think the World Juniors rosters are sometimes a bit weird? For example, in my game in 2011, the US got relegated to the 2nd-tier Juniors Championships, to a large degree because they insisted on playing a horrible, undrafted college goalie all through the tournament. Why not take my 3rd-round pick from 2010, the 2009/10 OHL goalie of the year, 2009/10 OHL Most Outstanding Player runner-up and 2010/11 multiple OHL Player of the Week and 2010 OHL Player of the Month, who's pretty much single-handedly keeping the St.Michael's Majors fighting for the top spot in OHL East? He's American, and didn't even make the US WJC roster.

I noticed this as well, it seems to be a problem mostly with the US team - they often use players from Junior A/B leagues like the EJHL etc.Kekkonen wrote:Does anyone think the World Juniors rosters are sometimes a bit weird? Sweden has also a few times pulled the "play a goalie with 3 in glove" trip.

That's happened in a couple of my games. The first two or three years the U.S. team seems to do okay but after that it's all downhill. A couple of times i've seen them relegated, and they don't usually even do that well in the 1. div. either, they just pick useless players and struggle every year. I think they might prefer players in college over guys in the OHL, haven't got a clue why...

Yes there is. The worse the team is, the easier it is to get a job there. except in some cases, your nationality you listed at the start of the game may inhibit you from getting a job. For example if you say you are from Iceland, you ain't getting a job with Team Canada.
FWIW--I have applied for both Canada and USA, and also Sweden. I always list as a Canadian, and I have gotten all the jobs every time I applied/

i've GMed Sweden jr and mens teams, Canada jr and mens teams, USA jr team and Poland mens team(what a pain in the ass)
national teams are fun and you have to spend tons of time on them and your can still run your other team without killing yourself.
unless you GM poland
...
i enjoyed GMing the jr teams the more, it's harder than GMing the mens teams... but GMing mens teams when you get hired by canada or usa can be hard during the nhl season as you have to use canadians or americans in europe.
