It's not that I did it on purpose or anything. I thought that it was 4 players from each team in each trade (max. 8 players per trade). Of course way too lazy from me not to study the rules enough. But since I got an unfair advantage over other players, I think the smart thing would be to kick me out of the challenge.

So Michalek has been awesome since coming over to our team. I've had him for 8 games so far and he's got 13 points (10 goals and 3 assists). My team's scoring had been pretty spread out up to until that point. He had played 7 games with us by the 20 game mark and had 10 goals (he had 2 assists in his 8th game) and that was good enough to lead the team. He had 9 goals (and 20 points) with the Sharks in 15 games before joining us. His combined total of 33 points is actually good enough for 5th in the league. Bouwmeester has also done well since joining our team. He's got 6 points in 8 games with us so far.

Season stratagems and other fun stuff.

I already have a pretty good idea where I'll go with my roster so why not write a bit about it?

Here's a brief look at my second season planning.

New scouting strategy

I realized I didn't put any scouts in the AHL last season while trying to make trades. All my efforts were put in amateur scouting and it was a stupid mistake. Here's a list of where I'll look this season. I decided to try putting all my scouts on "ignore well known" since I'll want to maximize my scouting coverage.. I'll list their stats for more information, JPA is "Judging Player Ability" and JPP is "Judging Player Potential"

J.Kealty (17JPA, 17JPP) will roam between the Entry Draft, Milwaukee (farm team) and the Preds on temporary intensive.
J.Bakula (19JPA 15JPP) will scout NHL teams on a permanent basis
M.Bakula (19JPA, 16JPP), a Czech Republic native, will scout his home country on a permanent basis (maybe it will help...)
A.Cronin (8JPA, 19JPP) will scout the QJMHL on a permanent basis
R.Ellis (9JPA, 19JPP) will scout the OHL on a permanent basis
J.Gannaway (18JPP, 16JPA) will scout the USA in case my roaming scout there miss somebody
V.Golovin (18JPP, 15GPA), a Russian, will scout Russia (here again, maybe its going to help...)
M.Howe (18JPP, 17GPA), will roam the american college route between the WCHA, USHL, USHW, HE and CCHA on temporary intensive
R.Johansson (3JPP, 18JPA) will be roaming between Denmark, Germany, Slovenia and Slovakia on temporary intensive on the lookout for missed gems
J.Kekalainen (20JPP, 19JPA) While it breaks my heart to keep such a strong scout in one place, Kekalainen, a Finland native, will scout his home country on a permanent basis.
R.Knickle (16JPP, 16JPA) will scout next opposition
S.Konowalchuk (16JPP, 17JPA) will be on a permanent basis in Sweden
T.MacAulay (19JPP, 19JPA) will look at players I put on my shortlist
M.Moore (19JPP, 15JPA) will be looking at the AHL on a permanent basis
T.Nolan (15JPP, 17JPA) will be looking at the WHL on a permanent basis

Lines Matchup

I already have a fair idea of what my lines will be. I'll use Man to Man defensive coverage everywhere and I'll issue a specific tactic to each player instead of using unit tactics. That way if something goes wrong I won't tweak unit tactics; I'll switch players. I'll go with the hot hand for my goalies since I don't have a fixed starter.

1st line
60 second shifts
Matched to the opposing third line

Sullivan-Arnott-Dumont
Suter-Weber

Its not use changing a winning strategy. These were my best players last season by a mile and they still will be. I used them in 60 second shift all along and they did not get too tired.

2nd line
40 second shifts
Matched to the opposing second line

Hartnell-Legwand-Erat
Kulyash-De Vries

Hopefully they'll be better this year with the addition of Hartnell. Kulyash was originally meant for the third defensive pairing but putting him there gives the whole second line an offensive kick and De Vries is a strong stay at home shutdown defenseman to help if things get hairy. Also, mixing my bottom two defensemen gives me the chance of going out with a more balanced bottom four.

3rd line
40 second shifts
Matched to the opposing first line

Pihlstrom-Bonk-Ortemeyer
Hamhuis-Klein

This will be my shutdown line. If things do not work well, I'll change my unit matching and going 1st vs 1st, 2nd vs 2nd, 3rd vs 3rd and 4th vs 4th. I could also put Nichol on this line and relegate Pihlstrom to a rookie/introduction line but that player gave me a good season last year and I want to give him a chance to surprise me once again

4th line
20 second shifts
Matched to the opposing fourth line

Platonov-Nichol-Belak
defensive pairings varies

I'll need Nichol to take faceoffs on PKs and I don't want to put rookies in PK role right off the bat because it tend to depress players. I just signed Platonov as a dept player and he could be usefull on the 4th line too. If this line doesn't work, I'll switch to my rookie line

Rookie special
20 second shifts
Matched to the opposing fourth line

Wilson-Hornqvist-Thuresson
defensive pairings varies

If things don't go well I'll break up my grinder line and I'll call up what should be my AHL first line this season. I might do that anyways to some measure to give my guys some experience.

New player spotlight

Here I put potential new players coming from the farm or Europe under the spotlight. They may have an interesting impact on my club.

Denis Kulyach

Everywhere I look scouts keep telling me Kulyach will be at best a third paring defenseman (and that's enthisiastic russian scout Golovin talking) and at worst a perennial 7th defenseman (and that's the rest of my scouts). I am, however, terribly excited when I see his stat screen because it is positively glowing green. Is there a "I suck" secret stat I can't see? I guess we'll know soon. Kulyach will have important responsibilities this season, he'll be on the second defensive pairing and on the first powerplay. Maybe being mentored by stalwart defenseman De Vries will not be enough. Will he stay on the second defense pairing? Will he end up on the third? Will he finish the season with a therapist in the AHL? We'll see!

Patrick Hornqvist

My AHL coaches kept telling me Hornqvist was ready for the big leagues. He was called up for 23 games and often had trouble, finishing up with a 6.48 AVG Rating. He is, however, projected to be a real good player. Will this be the year he breaks out?

Colin Wilson

Mr Wilson wanted to go straight from Boston U to a core role in the NHL, which angered me to no end. Even if my scouts tell me he's 1st round potential, I'll probably trade him for an actually core NHL player. Will he prove me wrong? He'll get strong minutes in the AHL and I'll give him the ice in the NHL if he delivers, but he'll have to hustle to match his ego.

Antti came out from nowhere to play very strong minutes on the second line last year. As my LW now has some dept, he will now be called to patrol the LW on the 3rd line. How will he react? Will he continue his progression?

One quarter in the books in season three, and we're off to our best start yet. It doesn't hurt that the Central is a bit weak.

My top three lines are tearing things up. I've put up my best goals for totals for any twenty game segment since the challenge began. Hugh Jessiman (15-17-32, +15) has made huge leaps now that he's moved back to his natural RW position with the addition of Raffi Torres (8-10-18, +8) and the true emergence of Colin Wilson (8-13-21, +4).

The SAD line is still dominant, although Dumont just went down for 10 days. The power play is greatly improved over last season, but the penalty kill is...in a word: stinky.

Ironically, Jason Arnott has led my team with 19 assists each of the three seasons.

As Season 3 is over it's time to look back and do some analyze.

I did reach my goal, got a playoff spot and won more than 4 games in the playoffs. Still I'm not totally satisfied or atleast I have a little mixed feelings of the season. We won the President's trophy with 11 points ahead of the Penguins. And we made it to the second round after dominating the Blues 4-1. In the second round we got the Flames to set up against us and I knew they would be a tough team to beat as we won 2 and lost 2 in the regular season against them. And it was a relatively tight serie as we lost two times in overtime and all the games, except the last one, were tight battles. So we lost the series 2-4. Biggest reasons for the losses were our dreadfull PP (I just can't seem to get it going on) and a whole lot of penalties. Our PK was still pretty good but if you take 7 to 11 two or five minute penalties per game against a team like the Flames you tend to give up a few PP goals. And maybe one of the reasons was Kiprusoff, as he played a good serie against us.

I'm still kind of reliefed that we didn't win the cup, 'cause that just means that there is still a lot to do with the team considering the roster and the tactics. But still, hopes were high after regular season ended...and it's never nice to lose...

By the way, Flyers went to win the cup, winning Oilers 4-3 in the final. It doesn't really suprise me you look at their roster: Gagne, Eric Cole, Hartnell, Chistov, Richards, Carter, Lupul, Kovalew, Påhlsson, Neil.... Sounds like a pretty stellar offense to me. And with Niittymäki in the net and a solid, not amazing but solid defense in front of him, I'm kind of suprised that they ended up 8th in the Eastern Conference in the regular season.

But the same formula continues on each season: every year different teams in the final and different President's trophy winner. And winning the President means you won't show up in the finals :-D

What comes to my prospects, Milwaukees first line had an excellent year: Svensson-Pääjärvi 70 games 93 points 8.30 AvgR, Vitaly Karamnov 79 games 113 points 8.65 AvgR(won AHL regular season in points) and Dale Hunt 80 games 101 points 7.79 AvgR.

Svensson-Pääjärvi seems to be NHL ready, but I would like to keep him for another year in Milwaukee. Hunt will need atleast another year in the AHL to be able to earn a spot on my roster. Karamnov will most likely to be a AHLer/backup for me, I just don't think he'll do good in NHL. But we'll see...

In February 2nd Milwaukee Admirals fired their General Manager. That's second fired GM in Milwaukee in this Challenge. That team must be one heck of a working place! They gave no warning this time either, they just snapped. And I know this isn't wise thing to do, but I've been watching (and nothing but watching) their game after firing MY MAN, and when in six games before the firing they were 1-5-0 and 14-26 in goals, now after the firing they are 0-6-0 and 12-36. But that's how it is until we have a game called NHL Board of Directors simulator. Now I'm just gonna let them suffer for a while before I bring my next manager in.

the reason for him wanting that is because he wants to stay for another year or so in college... if you wait one season he'll be considering squad status... always like that with players who are in college clubs.

I didn't think about that!

Thx for the insight! I though he saw himself as too good for us. Ahem. He might as well said so, I would have left him in college!

Hey eternium85, what happened with the Red Wings in your game, I noticed that they didn't even make the playoffs in season 3? :dunno:

I waited a year before signing Wilson, and it has paid off. He's on my second line in season three with 10 goals and 20 assists in 28 games so far. Not too bad, considering he's on the left wing with David Legwand who has only 6 points in 16 games and is a -10.

Timmy I'm not sure what happened in eternium's game however the Redwings dropped big time in my game in season 2. This was due to the departure of players like Zetterberg. They bounced back in season 3 with the signing of Ilya Kovalchuk.

1st quarter of the season report

I am overall very satisfied of my second season! We have more work to do but I believe we can be competitive!

Comparative with last year's first 20 games

Wins: 10 (+5)
Losses: 6 (-8)
SO loss: 4 (+3)
Conference rank: 6 (+9)
Goal scored: 76 (+13)
Goals against: 77 (-31)
PP%: 12.9% (-1.9%)
PK%: 84.4% (+11.4%)
TEAM PIM: 264 (-64)

The numbers lie a bit. While my defense was much tighter, penalties were less prevalent and goaltending was much superior to what I had last season at the same period, a lot of games were decided at the limit, in overtime or in the shootout. I still don't have a clear no1 goaltender and I will have to tweak my assignments to tighten the play a bit.

Tactical changes

I made a few tactical changes during these 20 games:

*I removed line matching. It wasn't such a great idea anyways since the main shutdown line I had identified last season finished their year with a cumulative -118 +/- AVG.
*I cut 10 seconds on my 3rd line shift and gave 10 second to the 4th line shift. Both have now equal shift time. The four lines have the following shift length now: 1st: 60sec, 2nd: 40 sec, 3rd: 30 sec, 4th: 30 sec.
*I mixed veterans and rookies on my bottom two lines. No more defensive 3rd line (it did not work anyways).
*Flee flowing breakout for my first 2 lines to effectively use their speed
*No more 1-4 forecheck and 1-1-3 neutral zone for my bottom 2 lines. A more reasonable and still conservative 1-2-2 forecheck/neutral zone will help my rookies shine a bit more

Team evaluation

1st line

Overall this line's statistics did not change much. They are still roughly used the same way but their tactics are all individually set so it is reassuring to see they are on pace to repeat their incredible numbers! The only thing I can say is that Sullivan's rating tend to vary a lot more from game to game. He still brings in the goods but he tends to have bad games more often following good games... getting old?

Sullivan-Arnott-Dumont
Suter-Weber

Sullivan: 20-14-18-32 +10 +/- AVG 12 PIM 7.95 AV R (7.84 last season) 22:56 ATOI (20:12 last season)
Arnott: 20-12-24-36 +10 +/- AVG 34 PIM 9.60 AV R (9.22 last season) 24:35 ATOI (20:08 last season)
Dumont: 20-12-14-26 +11 +/- AVG 6 PIM 8.25 AV R (8.23 last season) 22:16 ATOI (19:17 last season)
Suter: 20-0-5-5 -1 +/- AVG 10 PIM 7.15 AV R (7.18 last season) 26:53 ATOI (26:34 last season)
Weber: 20-2-12-14 +2 +/- AVG 28 PIM 7.95 AV R (7.50 last season) 27:08 ATOI (25:41 last season)

2nd line

Hartnell's arrival, Kulyash's introduction and the tactics changes really stabilized that line. Legwand and Erat has almost 1 more rating point than their last year's average! Offensive numbers are pretty much on pace with last year's number but they have a positive +/- avg this time around. Kulyash, in particular, is exceptional! He's my best performing defenseman with a 8.30 rating avg (the second best of the club after Arnott!) He's like a 6'3'', 213 pounds Soupy Campbell with Souray's slapshot! He's on my first powerplay and really brings a dynamic element to the 2nd line.

Hartnell-Legwand-Erat
Kulyash - De Vries

Hartnell: 20-9-10-19 0 +/- AVG 20 PIM 7.95 AV R 16:42 ATOI (not with club last season)
Legwand: 20-5-9-14 +2 +/- AVG 4 PIM 7.65 AV R (6.49 last season) 18:00 ATOI (15.41 last season)
Erat: 15-5-8-13 +2 +/- AVG 8 PIM 7.40 AV R (6.77 last season) 15:57 ATOI (14:52 last season)
Kulyash: 20-5-11-16 +6 +/- AVG 25 PIM 8.30 AV R 21:12 ATOI (not with club last season)
De Vries: 20-1-3-4 +6 +/- AVG 20 PIM 7.85 AV R (7.28 last season) 20:44 ATOI (23:44 last season)

3rd line

Yet again my 3rd line comes back to hunt me! I cut their ice time to limit my exposure but I'll have to change players if I really want to change the line dynamic. Glazachev will go back to my farm club and be replaced by another LW (either Pihlstrom, Platonov or Nichol. I can go to Wilson too but I really want him to stay in the AHL and develop for a year). Ortmeyer might go on the 4th line. I'll keep him in the club for now because he has great defensive statistics and he's part of my 1st PK unit but he will be on a really short leash.

Hamhuis and Bonk are no longer on the PP and it shows (Bonk used to be on the point of the second unit). Kulyash has taken Hamhuis's place and there is no going back barring an injury. One of my young guys, Hornqvist, has replaced Bonk on the point to give him some offensive icetime and I'll leave him there for now. If the PP does not get better (they are having a rough patch), I might change the mix and put Bonk back there. Bonk is on my 1st PK unit too so its important to keep him happy. Maybe he will have better numbers if I put better guys on the third line...

Glazachev - Bonk - Ortmeyer
Hamhuis - Zanon

Glazachev: 20-1-0-1 -7 +/- AVG 6 PIM 6.05 AV R 6:47 ATOI (not with club last season)
Bonk: 18-2-2-4 -8 +/- AVG 10 PIM 6.89 AV R (7.28 last season) 15:47 ATOI (20:15 last season)
Ortmeyer: 20-0-1-1 -10 +/- AVG 10 PIM 6.15 AV R (6.07 last season) 13:21 ATOI (14:56 last season)
Hamhuis: 20-0-1-1 -5 +/- AVG 4 PIM 6.65 AV R (7.32 last season) 13:15 ATOI (23:50 last season)
Zanon: 12-1-0-1 -7 +/- AVG 0 PIM 6.75 AV R (6.46 last season) 10:33 ATOI (12:25 last season)

4th line

This line is my last grasp for sanity for my 4th line. Pilhstrom used to be there too but he's benched because he's getting depressed. Nichol is getting to be a desperate cause and was either benched or hurt for most of the season. Hornqvist came in to replace him and went on the 2nd line as a RW during Erat's injury. Hornqvist is playing a bit better than his avg rating shows and I gave him some time on the 2nd PP unit to boost his morale. Nichol will probably go on the bench along with his other defensive specialist and will be replaced by other roleplayers or a rising rookie. Maybe new tactics will help change the mediocrity...

Nichol - Hornqvist - Belak
Varies - Varies

Nichol: 6-0-2-2 -2 +/- AVG 6 PIM 5.83 AV R (5.92 last season) 7:58 ATOI (11:15 last season)
Hornqvist: 19-3-5-8 +1 +/- AVG 10 PIM 6.79 AV R (6.48 last season) 10:07 ATOI (11:47 last season)
Belak: 20-0-4-4 -3 +/- AVG 39 PIM 6.75 AV R (6.64 last season) 8:21 ATOI (5:51 last season)

Goalies

No goalie clearly took the lead this season. Ellis has a slighly better winning record but not enough to insure him the lead. Once again it looks to be shaky in that position and I'm hoping against hope somebody will catch fire. The only silver lining is that I have 2 backups instead of 1 backup and 1 AHL goalie but that's very slim.

Halak 10GP 3W 4L 3T 3.81GA 0.870SV% 7.20 AVG Rating
Ellis 11GP 7W 2L 1T 3.44GA 0.877SV% 7.36 AVG Rating
Last season (Ellis): 3.68GA 0.889SV% 7.70 AVG Rating

New personnal tactic format

After 20 games of using the same personal tactic strategy I'll make some changes. I already refined some of the criterias I look at so I think it could be useful to update the list. Overall they are small tweaks to try to tighten thing up in my roster and get a better record. I changed the attribute ratings to get more conservative settings and I added some criterias to consider.Once again my thanks to B72

Attribute rating
1-7: Weakest setting (1/5)
8-9-10-11: Second weakest (2/5)
12-13-14: Normal setting (3/5)
15-16-17: High setting (4/5)
18-20: Highest setting (5/5)

Criterias

Mentality: Look in the player's scout report. Defensive player = defensive. Two way = neutral. Offensive = offensive
Aggressiveness: Look at aggressiveness attribute
Backchecking: Look at acceleration, speed, stamina and checking attributes
Gap control: Look at acceleration, speed and positioning attributes
Puck pressure:Look at checking and pokecheck attributes
Hitting: Look at hitting and strength attributes
Tempo: Look at acceleration, speed and stamina attributes
Passing: Look at passing and creativity attributes
Shooting: Look at Slapshot + Wristshot. Low at both lowers the setting. High at both elevates the setting. Low wrist + high slap, I follow the slapshot setting up to barrage. Low slap + high wrist lowers the setting to get more quality and precision at the cost of volume.
Dumping the puck: Depend on the line's role. Not personalized.

Shoot/Pass bias: Strongest skill. Career role in scout report can influence the decision. There must at least be 1 passer and 1 shooter per line, ideally of opposite hand side.
Fighting: strenght, aggression and value of player

Carry puck: Deking + stickhandling
Join rush: Look at acceleration, speed and off the puck attributes

It doesn't really suprise me you look at their roster: Gagne, Eric Cole, Hartnell, Chistov, Richards, Carter, Lupul, Kovalew, Påhlsson, Neil.... Sounds like a pretty stellar offense to me. And with Niittymäki in the net and a solid, not amazing but solid defense in front of him, I'm kind of suprised that they ended up 8th in the Eastern Conference in the regular season.

But the same formula continues on each season: every year different teams in the final and different President's trophy winner. And winning the President means you won't show up in the finals :-D
Hey eternium85, what happened with the Red Wings in your game, I noticed that they didn't even make the playoffs in season 3? :dunno:
Well after the first season they have basically changed their whole core of players. Lost Hossa and Zetterberg to free agency, traded away Samuelsson, Holmström, Stuart, Kronvall, Rafalski, Franzen, Datsyuk... In those trades they mostly acquired young players, prospects and draft picks. Their best players are now Olli Jokinen, Marty Turco, Jason Pominville and Trent Hunter. They do still have Lidström but he's really getting too old now. But they do have some young talent on the team, so maybe they'll bounce back in some time.

I didn't think about that!

Thx for the insight! I though he saw himself as too good for us. Ahem. He might as well said so, I would have left him in college!
I think going to the WHL was better for his development. College teams don't play as many games, do they"

I dunno. He put up some impressive numbers in that year I let him play for BU, with an 8.35 AvR, which was highest among all my unsigned prospects that first season. Then in his first year in the NHL (I had him bypass Milwaukee since my LW depth was beyond pitiful) and he put up 53 points playing in all 82 games primarily on the third line with occasional 2d line and 2d unit PP responsibilities depending on injuries. Now he's driving my second line, and I'm attempting to lock him up for a very long time.

He's not in the WHL... he's in the AHL with some time in the NHL. I try to bring my prospects in the AHL at 20 year old, college or not. I do not know if the college circuit is as good a development circuit in the game as in real life so I did not take a chance with my #2 ranked prospect.

That being said, I would have put him in college if I knew he was being difficult for the reason!

I have Jeremy Morin (currently ranked #3 in my prospect pipeline) is in Boston U (HE, 15 NHL drafted prospects), Seth Hegelson and Ryan Flynn are with the Minnesota Golden Gophers (WCHA, 13 NHL drafted prospects), Taylor Stefishen with Ohio State (CCHA, 9 NHL drafted prospects) and Brock Montpetit with the Wisconsin Badgers (WCHA, 11 drafted prospects)) so I'll probably have a chance to see how other college routes perform.

Don't get me wrong. I think he'll perform either way (College or WHL). I just think that more games and better competition in the WHL will benefit him. In my game Wilson had a 8.43 average rating and 97 points in 65 WHL games in the 06-07 season. Then in the 07-08 season he stayed in the WHL and dominated with a 9.57 average rating and 134 points in 69 games. Now in 08-09 he's in the WHL and 26 games into the season he's got a 9.19 average rating and 41 points. I'm hoping to keep him in the AHL for the entire season (despite only having 1 offensive LW on my NHL roster) and then I'll see if it made any difference.

Season 2 regular season is now over and I finished second in my conference. First round opponent in playoffs was Los Angeles Kings and we swept them. Lets see how long this team can go. I made couple of trades during the season:

To Nashville:
G Jimmy Howard
RW Greg Moore

To Rangers:
G Dan Ellis
G Chet Pickard

To Nashville:
D Eric Brewer

To St. Louis:
RW Martin Erat
D Tim Erixon
G Jeremy Smith

Greg Moore was fantastic. He had 8.45 average rating while playing mostly in 3rd and 4th line. Howard is my #1 goalie and was a clear improvement over Ellis. He had a 2.20 GAA and 91,3 save percentage in the first round. Brewer has been maybe my best defenseman since he got here.

I'd say this season was a bit of an improvement. Last year I was dead last in the league and now I'm in the conference semifinals. Tavares had a nice rookie season and has scored three goals in the playoffs already. Shanahan is already 41-years old but had a good season and has been great in the post-season.

Well.. I made it to the conference finals. I eliminated the Sharks in 6 games and the next was Vancouver. Vancouver Luongos managed to win in 7 but what a series it was. I was down 3-1 already but my team fought back to tie it 3-3. Then came the game 7. Howard played otherwise great playoffs but I don't know what the hell happened to him. He let in every shot and I lost the game 9-3. I say Vancouver Luongos because Luongo had over 40 saves in every game but the last. I have to be happy with how well my team did but this last game left a pants taste in my mouth. Oh well, there's always next season!

Hate to burst the bubble, but your second trade looks to be against the rules. Erixon is eligible for the 2007 draft (before season two) and he would need to be on your roster for one full year before you can trade him away.

Small question:

Any players that become UFA with your club count as a UFA signing in your tier if you sign them back?

Just want to make sure.

Do you mean that you could not re-sign them before July 1st?

Yeah.

I'm in the middle of season 2 and just received the list of my players contracts expiring.

Wade Belak and Scott Nichol are going to be UFA after this season..

I won't resign Nichol but Belak is a good role player. I'd resign him if its a free resign but I'll definitely wait for July 1st if he counts in my UFA quota since I'm pretty sure I can get better value.

It also rung a bell that Arnott is going to be UFA in 2009 and I'm pretty sure you can't renew contracts like that...
