Wilson not to return as coach
Monday 4th August 2003
http://www.thisisthenortheast.co.uk
NEWCASTLE Vipers coach Rob Wilson returned from GB duty this week to be delivered the news, that he would not be the coach for the 2003-4 campaign. Vipers owner Darryl Illingworth said: This decision was made for the best interests of the club. We feel that a player coach is the wrong way to go about things. We have identified a few candidates for the job, but with the majority of the team signed, some coaches are reluctant to commit themselves. We have shortlisted some coaches interested but personal terms still need to be sorted. Wilson was quoted to saying: I was shocked to hear the news, I was looking foward to the new season. But thats the risk you take when you become a coach. Nothing is ever one hundred percent guranteed, I just hope that the new coach has as much fun and success that I have enjoyed here.
It is believed there are four people lined up for the position. One being former Sheffield Steelers coach Don McKee. But with a few health issues other coaches have to be considered. Illingworth has stated that a new coach should be announced this Friday.

Rookie named as new coach
Friday 8th August 2003
http://www.thisisthenortheast.co.uk
NEWCASTLE Vipers have announced the signing of 27-year-old Canadian coach Stuart Fenton. While this may shock some, suprisingly Darryl Illingworth was ecstatic about the capture of Stuart Fenton, he said: Stuart is a major coup for the Vipers. He has little in experience of coaching, but we were looking for somebody young and enthusiastic. Stuart showed us a different side of coaching, he made it very clear his intentions and plans for the club. He shares our ambition and cannot wait to get behind the bench. Stuart was unfortunate in his junior career, taking a bad check from behind which put his hockey career on hold. He decided to get into coaching, boasting a Level 4 coaching degree. He got an assistant coach job in the QSPHL while quite young in his coaching years. And recently was looking to move to Europe. Illingworth was suprised by Fenton's tactics, Illingworth said: Most coaches got there agents to sort everything out. Fenton though called the offices and said he was interested. We flew out to St. Johns Newfoundland early this week to speak to him, and he clearly stuck out. He plays a different style of hockey, and we think he will be a diamond in the rough for us.
Stuart is set to fly into Manchester airport tomorrow and meet his team that afternoon. Fans can meet all there favourite players on the 12th August at the meet the players night, at the Metro Radio Arena at 8pm.

I land at Manchester Airport at 7.55am, having queued through baggage claim I meet Darryl Illingworth at the terminal exit. We drive to Newcastle and I get to drop all my bags off at the house that I will be living at for the next year. Darryl shows me around the house and gives me directions to the arena. I decide to get a lift with Darryl there so I can get a feel for the area with somebody I know.
We arrive outside the arena, its bigger than I thought it would be. I am informed that its a rented rink but holds 8,000 seats. Which is the biggest in the British National League. We walk into the arena and I stand at the top of the arena looking at the ice. Its a wide rink so the game is going to be fast paced, its the kind of rink suited for faster European players. The ice looks good aswell, a big Viper is being painted on at centre ice. I get a sense that this is a very professional set up. I am invited into Darryls office.
Darryl makes it clear that he expects the team to make the playoffs. This shouldnt be that hard as the top six teams make the playoffs, and in a league of seven teams it is very achievable. I ask him a little about the history of the team. Its slightly worrying to hear that there has been a history of players not being paid, and teams being put into liquidation. Having previously known as the Riverkings and Jesters. This is a new name for the team The Vipers. Im also warned about recruiting too many Europeans, the previous teams signed a lot of Finnish players, who were over priced and didnt play well, thus half the team nearly being Canadian now.
We walk down to the changing room, their are 22 black, white and gold shirts all hung up in seperate cubicles. Each shirt having a name and number on the back. Darryl says that they can still sign four more import players and that there is room in the budget for some new players. Some of the players here are young players who would be happy riding the pine for the season. I look in the corner, there is a big white board with various notes and scribbles on. A large wooden stick rack is also in the corner with various sticks and tape on.
I am led to my office, its a medium sized room next door to the changing rooms. On the wall is a big white board and three marker pens. There is a desk at the back and a chair, a computer and big file sits on my desk. On the other side of the office is a big filing cabinet and a television with a VCR underneath. Three extra chairs sit in front of my desk, which looks extremely bare with just a phone, computer screen and keyboard on. I also notice in the corner is a fax machine.
Darryl tells me he is off to help arrange the meet the players night, and that if I need anything to try and find him. He points out that there is a mobile phone and number in the second draw of the desk. That will be my main point of communication outside of the office.
Atleast now I know where everything is, I can get home and get some sleep. I take a taxi back home and start unpacking all my belongings.

I decide to get to the rink early, I walk into my office at 7am with a cup of rink coffee in my hand. I start looking through the big file that is sitting on my desk. Its got a copy of all the standard players contracts. I look through it. Every player is on a one year contract except for Jonathan Weaver, David Longstaff, and Rob Wilson. Who are all contracted to 2006. I am interested to see that both Longstaff and Weaver have NHL release clauses.
As all the players are in the country now, I start to devise the training sessions. I arrange a training basically focusing on attacking.
I notice that the only coach I have got is Rob Wilson. I call Darryl and inform him that I am going to be on the look out for a head coach and assistant. He is happy but makes it clear I have to stick with the budget.
I offer a contract to 51 year old British born Brian Wall for the position of head coach. 58 year old Stephen Duncombe is offered the position as assistant GM. 39 year old Terry Phillips is offered the job as assistant coach. I expect to hear back from them in the next couple of days.
I recieve a fax from the Metro Arena marketing department, they are interested in setting up a tournament . They would like a three day tournament set up with three other teams. I am asked to invite some clubs. I send a fax to Mike Blaisdell of the Sheffield Steelers inviting his club to play. Sheffield always bring big crowds and are seen as one of the best teams in the UK. I decide to see if a European team will come. I contact ex-London Knights coach Jim Brithen and inform him that theres a spot available for Swedish allsvenskan club ALK at the tournament. Finally I go all out and invite QMSHL team the Verdun Dragons. I contact the Marketing department and let them know. I was not expecting to be this involved with the Marketing department. But I will do what I have to.
ALK reply quickly saying they arent interested. So I try using my contacts to set up an arrangement with St.Georges De Beauce ofthe QMSHL. It will be good for the fans to see a team who hasnt been in the UK before.
Monday 11th August 2003
Luckily I get into the office and see a pile of paper sitting by the fax machine. Sheffield, Verdun and St.Georges have all accepted. I fax the papers to the Metro Arena marketing department. Now we have six exhibition games before the start of the season. I write the fixtures down on the whiteboard in both the office and the lockeroom. Today is the first proper practice, I will get to meet the team officially and get to know them a bit better.
Next Fixtures
22/08/2003- Vipers V Guildford Flames
26/08/2003- Hull Stingrays V Vipers
28/08/2003- Vipers V Fife Flyers
30/08/2003- Vipers V Sheffield Steelers
31/08/2003- Vipers V Verdun Dragons
01/09/2004- Vipers V St.Georges
Its a tough schedule, but its a long season and I want to see how the players stamina is after these games.
I am told that QMJHL sides Acadie-Bathurst Titan and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies have offered Terry Phillips a job as assistant GM. I still have not heard anything yet on the job offers.
I get to meet the players for the first time, practice is light today. I tell them that I expect them to give 100% all season, anybody who gives anything less will be looking for a new club. I warn them that I am not afraid to change my line ups mid season and nobodys job is safe. I watch the team do some light drills and chat to Rob Wilson a lot. He is the other coach for the team. I notice the team is not a fast team, it looks like a lot of grinders and bangers. A position that I am slightly worried about is the netminder. 32 Year old Pasi Raitanen is the starting netminder. I will keep an eye on him.
I finish the first session early and send them to the gym to finish off. I go to my office and get a knock on the door by three players. I ask them to wait outside. I call Kevin Bucas in first.
He wants clarification on his future with the team. I tell him at this stage that he is a regular player on the team and that I see him no differently from anybody else. Next I call in Scott Campbell. The 31 year old defenceman wants me to know that this will be his last season in hockey. He has decided to retire at the end of the season due to business commitments. I thank him for letting me know. Finally Karl Culley is bought in. He asks about his status and future with the Vipers. I tell him he is a regular player and that we will assess his future with the team at the end of the season.[/list]

The previous work hasnt been to hectic. Some fans are asking why we havn't signed up any new imports and am I holding out for certain players. Currently I have a 22 man bench and I want to see what each player can do, before I start signing up players. I have started to devise some lines, and have been playing about with different positions. I still need to decide who is going to be the captain. I have four days to decide, but I have some sort of idea. I recieved a call from Matt Deane of the Coventry Blaze, he was asking about Andrew Thornton, he has offered us £7000 for him. I tell him I will call him back. I ask both Rob Wilson and Brian Wall there thoughts on him. They were keen on him but not jumping up and down keen. I ring back Matt Deane and tell him ill accept the offer. I have accepted because it means that he can put himself in the window for bigger and better teams. More scouts will watch the Elite league than they would the BNL. I have given Thornton a phone call and told him Coventry would get in touch. He seemed a bit shocked but said he would consider it.
Tuesday 19th August 2004
Coventry called to confirm that Thornton had agreed to go to the Blaze. I gave them instructions about payment and wished Thornton all the best. I told him that a place was available on the team should he ever want it. We shaked hands and went on our way.
Thursday 21st August 2004
Its the day before the first game against Guildford. I get the team in the locker room and talk through the game ahead. Even though its an exhibition game. Many people will judge us on our first game. So its important we are firing all cylinders. Guildford are a big spending club and used to winning, I outline some key points:
Speed
Guildford are a team full of Slovakian players, they are quick and will use the whole of the rink to there advantage. Hit them hard on the boards and try and dont let them attack on the break.
Key players
Milos Melicherik- Played on a line with Marian Gaborik, extremely experienced, will big a point scorer
Scott Levins- Big and tough, ex-nhl player. Will use physical play against us
Ryan Vince- ECHL sniper, will be quick and has good hands
Stevie Lyle- Best British goalie in the league, his positioning can sometimes be weak though.
Game plan
Hit them hard on the boards, they have players like Stan Marple and Scott Levins who will get wound up easily and take stupid penalties. Playing physical may quiet the Slovakians down.

Not a bad result, we had four less imports than Guildford who have an extra one on the ice due to two British netminders. Was dissapointed with Pasi Raitanen. Good performances by the first and second lines. We need to be tighter in defence and possibly get more selective with our shots instead of firing everything at the net. I expect better performances though in the second game of the season.

I get into the office early, I have been given a lead about a defensive foward who I think will fit in really well with the team. I offer him a trial contract of 4 weeks. I also look to bring in another British foward to make up the fourth line. I offer a 4 week trial to the British foward aswell. I am looking to get some more players on trial contracts so I can judge them for myself. I will call a few agents and see how it goes.
I have four spots left to fill, one could be used on a new goalie. It depends on how the next few games go. If I don't replace the goalie then it could be 2 new defenceman and 2 fowards. But there is not a good selection of players available yet. So I will hold on until the proper games start. A few trial contracts are offered but I don't expect half the players to come all the way to Newcastle for a trial.

Justin Kot on Trial
Tuesday 12th August 2003

NEWCASTLE Vipers have fought off competition from Estevan Bruins to capture the signature of Canadian foward Justin Kot. From the Oklahoma City Blazers . Kot, 21, iced for the Blazers last season, where he finished after a successful season with the Estevan Bruins. Last season the 6"2' 198 lb right winger iced a total of 61 times scoring 14 goals and 29 assists for an impressive 43 points. While racking up over two hundred penalty minutes. Coach Stuart Fenton describes the player as quick and feisty. Who is very intelligent defensively, something we lacked in the game against Guildford. Regarding the trial contract Fenton said: He'll have to pass all the medicals and everything, and we'll see how he practices and make a decision whether we put him in the lineup.
You can catch your Vipers on the 26th August away to the Hull Stingrays.

NEWCASTLE Vipers are delighted to announce this morning that they have signed 27 year old Gareth Owen on a four week trial contract. The Cardiff born right winger had started the season with the elite league side Coventry Blaze, but was released early into the season. Vipers coach Stuart Fenton was quick to offer a trial to the right winger, with the hopes that he can sign a full time contract after the trial. Fenton was quoted saying: Gareth is a great British player, and it was a shame that he got released so early into the season. But we have agreed for him to play for the four week contract, and after that period we can discuss what both our plans for the future will be.
The addition of Owen can only make the Vipers stronger, the team beat a import based Hull Stingrays side 4-2 at the Hull arena last night. With other trialist Justin Kog getting an assist on the Vipers first goal.
