Doug Weight to Carolina

Post by Borlag »

The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired Doug Weight and 27-year-old Finnish forward Erkki Rajamaki from the St. Louis Blues. In exchange, Carolina gave to the Blues three draft picks and three players. The package includes forward Mike Zigomanis, Jesse Boulerice, Magnus Kahnberg and the Hurricanes' first-round pick in 2006.

All I can say at that is darn, the 'canes are really going for it now. The price they paid for Weight is way too much though, a first rounder for a rental player?

Wow... this has all the earmarks of a team desperate with injuries and not much to do but overpay if they want to get the job done. I don't blame them though, they are overperforming like maniacs and obviously have something special going with the best record in the league. It's similar to Calgary and Tampa last year in that they are really gaining a strong following and tons of organizational momentum so you have to tell those new devotee's "We're in this to win it! Buy your season tickets now before our 'secret' gets out and the waiting list is too long!"

Obviously I am making no comparisons between the franchises other than they both are riding/rode hard working teams with lower overall talent levels to great success that really ignited their fan base here. In a lot of ways that is hell of a lot more important to a franchise than sacrificing some future for PR and momentum when it is crucial. :dunno:

The all time worst of these deals though was Philly a few years back they needed centers desperately to replace Primeau who was injured and Roenick who was talking possible retirement due to his hideous concussion problems if I remember correctly and they paid Washington Maxime Ouellet, a 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd rounder in 2002. :-o He did nothing for them and they let him go as a free agent after the season.

Actually this trade wasn't as bad as it may seem.

The Hurricanes 1st round pick is going to be pretty useless in this draft seeing as it's shallow to begin with and it will be a high pick. They got rid of Boulerice who we played once a month and for about 40-60 seconds a game and Zigomanis who was not living up to his expectations at all.

We got more depth.

We did overpay, just not as much as you all seem to think

I also dont think the trade is as bad. The first round pick will be late and I think they need to do everything they can to improve the team for a cup run. Weight is a free agent so his salary wont hurt them against the cap next year.

He won't be scoring any goals for them either.

All I can say is I'm glad Carolina got him, because now the rumors of him going to Calgary can be laid to rest.

*shivers* Weight in a Flames uniform :-k ](*,)

Tkachuk could give boost to someone. I could see some team poised to go all the way give it a shot.

Doesn't Tkachuk's contract run through next season as well? Or is he a pending UFA? :dunno:

It does if I'm not too much mistaken. But if a team has money to burn, they could do much worse. Tkachuk is a hard-nosed player and can and will produce under right circumstances. He can be obtained for a relatively decent price I would assume, and play out his contract. At very worst, he becomes a "expiring contract" next year and therefore desirable trade material.

I think St. Louis knew they had to move one of their big salaries (beside Pronger who they moved in the offseason) and the decision came down to Weight over Tkatchuk. I think they will keep Tkatchuk around just so their five or six fans still have something to believe in :-p They are a team that desperately needs to be sold though and that is the real source of their on-ice problems in the long run.
