Without referring to any player specifically, I think there has been a tendency to be so scared to overrate a players future potential that it often has been underrated in the past. While still allowing for a swing in future ratings by using the negative potential I have always thought it makes more sense to set up the Tavares/Duchene/Hedmans of the world to become good players rather than having them be flops. Could they flop? yes, and they can be adjusted for that in the future, but I think in general people will be happier seeing the players they expect to become good, do so.
Now of course the danger is the league getting too top heavy on stars, but i hope you understand what I am getting at.
Yeah, they can flop. Who remembers finnish forwards Jesse Niinimäki or Jani Rita? They were first round picks, and todays Rita is 1st line player in SM-league. Niinimäki has last years been in tryout in many SM-league teams, played ok few games and then sucked. He even have been released from Slovakian league, cause he played so poorly about 1-2 years ago.
Craig Anderson might be hot right now, but he's not a fantastic goalie. He's pretty good, but he's just on one big hot streak right now. Steve Mason, however, has the potential to be a top goalie. Last year he was only 20 and played a fantastic season, and many goaltenders don't get starter status until the upper half of their 20s. When he hits that peak age of 26-29, he'll be a franchise goalie in my opinion. But that's my opinion.
Here's something interesting. If you've seen the prospects thread you know Lidas has developed a set formula for prospect potentials based on Hockeyfuture.com
In September 2008 HockeyFuture rated Steve Mason a potential of 7.5C which equals -8 or -7 based on our current formula. Now obviously Mason went on to have a huge year and today he would almost certainly have a potential of -9 or even -10. Players can surprise you, and that goes both directions. Your best best for rating players in take in all the professional opinions you can find and using those as your primary guide. We can always adjust ratings again in later versions.
grossman46 wrote:you also forgot to put ryan miller and vesa toskala in your list batdad
Miller is there. Toskala does not belong on a list of goalies. Was wondering when someone would notice him missing.
If Toskala doesn't, than mebbie Ian White does And yes, you forgot Kipper.
Seriously now, I wonder whether Toskala's ever going to bounce back and play up to the potential he once showed. Seems unlikely. Gustavsson, on the other hand, has already shown some promise, but he sure needs time and seasoning to be a reliable starter in the NHL.
batdad wrote:Kipper is core now. At the beginning of last year would have had him as key. But core now...
It's a shame Kiprusoff's ability dived so much after his peak season of 2003-2004. He could have been up there with Brodeur, Hasek, and the other greats if he kept going to way he was.
But now, he's good for 2.50 GAA/0.910 SVP at best.
Kipper will look like his old self once the team in front of him remembers how to play defense. But as far as adjusting him in the game goes I agree you have to base it off his actual numbers.
Guys there almost done but I'd say the earliest is friday...
Thats way too early. One team takes at least 3 hours to update, so on weekdays - when Im working, I do have a life too - I can only update (at the most) one team a day, and I have 13 more teams to update... there are also some other stuff I need to throw in, so you guys do the math.

Is there anything those of us who are willing to forsake our "day to day life" can do to help you along?

Thanks, but I've got it all covered. I want to update the prospects myself so the ratings are more accurate. Some of the research Ive recieved overrates the player attributes, and some research underrates them. More likely because of a slight lack of experience while setting attributes than doing it on purpose. Since I have worked on the DB for so long, I have developed a feeling how to balance the attributes, so Id rather do it myself (based on the research of course).
I know all of you want to play new game with updated databas, but please do not remember that Lidas is detailist and he want to have everything in top class (am I right Lidas :-p ).I want to play new game also but know that I have to be patience and after that I can enjoy really good game.So all people who can not wai just a simple message:PLEASE BE PATIENCE AND LET LIDAS AND OTHER PEOPLE DO THEIR JOB and in few week we all can enjoy new game.
Guys are you watching career of Tomas Tatar who was drafted by Detroit Red Wings in 2 nd round this year.I can read only best word everywhere.Of course he is not like Tavares or Hedman, but I think his future is connected closely with Red Wings..
