Found this article. "The most valuable team was the Toronto Maple Leafs, which saw its estimated value rise 5 percent to $470 million"

Isn't amazing that one of the suckiest teams is worth the most money?

Nope. Because it is in the biggest market in Canada, it is an original 6 team, and Canada is the biggest hotbed of hockey in the world. Totally not shocked. In fact the only way I would be shocked is if they were ranked any lower than number one.

Now the fact that they are naff....why would they be motivated to put a strong team out there...when they can be cheap, horrible and still make millions. There is no threat ever to the Loafs being anything than the highest value or revenue team in the NHL. None, except in a year when the Rangers go 72-9 and win the cup.

Can someone explain the final 5 minute instigator rule.

I noticed that Hordichuk was suspended for 1 game due to the fact he was ejected with 4:56 to play... I don't understand why that counts as an automatic suspension and a fine for his coach? :dunno: What's the point? :-?

Automatic suspension to keep teams and players from getting into a brawl at the end of stupid games. It was starting to happen alot about 4 years ago, in blow out games or meaningless games to "SEND A MESSAGE". Coaches sent out tough guys to go after players. So any instigation it is automatic. I forget...but there was one incident that was real bad and highly publicized that cinched this rule.

$10 K for coach--helps discourage coach from sending guys out to intentionally do this. And in Hordichuk's case I guess Vigneault thought the 10k and losing a 10th liner for a game was a good deal to send a message to the Blues. Except Janssens kicked Hordi's weeny arse. :-D

I'm not positive but I think it's to curb senseless frustration fights when games get out of hand. I don't know the specifics of this game but my guess is they made the rule so that if a team is getting blown out they don't get any reckless gooning due to people being mad over getting blown out. That's just my take on it. I'm not sure if it's the actual reason though.

EDIT:

Yeah... what Batdad said. I was just slow in responding. That'll teach me to do 3 things at once and leave a reply box open. :nerd:

Komisarek's out for three weeks. Given his record this season (16 games, no points, -9 in +/-), not much of a loss for the Leafs.

Huge loss. I mean beligerance, truclance....what is Burke going to do now? Especially since McIntyre was already picked up by florida. Sheesh. Poor laughs may have to dress a skill player. That just won't work.

Ah, the Bruins are back to not being able to score. Thomas had a crazy save during the shootout.

IIRC, it was the Rags vs. the Jackets on 09 November 2002. Bryan Trottier sent out a 5-man goon squad with less than 3 seconds left in a 6-3 loss. Krzysztof Oliwa cross checked Grant Marshall in the jaw on the faceoff and a brawl broke out. Trottier was suspended for a couple of games and shortly after this rule came out.

If you want to watch the action...

I love the "Did Damien Cox turn it into an anti fighting article anyway? And both answers are "yes" 1-5 games. Awesome.

That Oliwa punch on Marshall was brutal; I didn't remember it, actually. It reminded me of another situation concerning Oliwa, when he got mad at and attacked a number of Polish national team players in a hotel. Three players (Dziubiński, Kolusz and Noworyta) got injured in that brawl. Happened this April, IIRC. Dunno if you heard about it. Oliwa's the only Pole to date to have ever won the Stanley, and too bad he's such a psycho.

Didn't Oliwa assault his wife/girlfriend with a hockey stick? I think I read that somewhere.

As for him being a psycho, you could argue that he would have never got his name on the cup if he wasn't. Only reason he was in the NHL was because he could beat people up.

True enough, the guy is one of the worst hockey players ever to have his name engraved on the cup.
