That would be easiest in regards to league structure and it's recent enough that there will be many players that everyone is familiar with. Some of the current league stars would be on their junior teams or maybe even younger than that. It could be interesting.
I've been thinking about this one as well. The last teams joined in 2000-01 season. I looked into it and even drew up the NA leagues from that time. I thought about (negative)aging all players with the editor and then using the FA device. The problem is setting everyone abilities and attributes back to a level that is suitable. I don't know if there is a possibility to find scouting reports from that time, I haven't looked. It would take a lot of time, though, and my time now goes into Lidas research(I've started to work on 2.1 stuff).

I have to say it, because hope no one thinks it, I do NOT mean to denigrate the work of the person who did the original file. Looking at what he did .. I doubt I could do it. We can always pick holes in things but he didn't sit on his butt thinking about what he could do ... he tried to do it. I would still be sitting on my butt. I am always greatful to people who take a chance. I usually choose not to take the chance. :(

It was in 00-01? For some reason it's felt like it's been longer. Still, you're totally thinking along the same lines as me. It would be a huge project. As for the players abilities, we could use the ShaddSheet to figure out their CA and we could figure out their PA based on their current roles. I doubt we could find their scouting reports from back then (unless somebody subscribed to a service that had published them back then) but we could try to keep them proportionate to what they end up at now. Maybe use a math formula (thrown into Excel) that takes their current 09-10 attributes and multiplies them by a number determined by taking their 00-01 CA and dividing it by their 09 CA.

For example...

Using the Shadsheet, Chara's CA for the 00-01 season was 127. His CA in the current game is 177. So we take...

127/177=0.71751412429378531073446327683616

So we take that and chop a lot of the decimal places down. Make it .72 instead. So we would take each of Chara's current attributes (not including the ones that don't change over the course of the game) and multiple them by .72 and we'd get their never value.

Does that make sense?

Still, like you said, this would be a HUGE project and you're working with Lidas on his roster updates. I definitely think it's key that the game be kept up to date with the Lidas rosters, much more than historical databases. But still, if someone had the time and dedication to spearhead something like this, it could be a whole lot of fun.

Totally. Nobody is putting down the original work done. We're just talking about what it would take to do a complete historical database update.

Same here. We're in our busy season at work and then I'll have two newborns to take care of in another couple months. At some point I could probably help on research and stuff but I definitely don't have the time to spearhead an intensive project like this.

Hey guys, as the creator of the 79-80 db I felt I just had to throw in some comments :D

First, here is the "official" thread for my mod: http://www.ehmtheblueline.com/forums/vi ... php?t=3379

As others have noted in here, a database like this is a HUGE project and back when I created this mod (two years ago) I was bed-ridden for several weeks and needed something to do. That's how this db was possible. There wouldn't have been any other way, I think.
Regarding player histories: This is by far the most time-consuming work, so I only made histories for players that ended up in the top-10 all-time in some statistical categories (guys like Phil Esposito, Bobby Orr, Mike Bossy, Gordie Howe etc. have histories). Feel free to expand those histories. It'll take you AGES :D

Just to give you some insight: Every player who played at least one game in the 79-80 season is in the DB. Thats roughly 650 players. Then I added probably 70-80% of players drafted between 1980 and 1982 and added some more prominent prospects for the 1983 and 1984 drafts. I also created roughly 40 players for the Soviet National Team. Over 1400 players were created in total!
That is A LOT and it took me weeks to complete this by working five or six hours every day on this. The db is absolutely playable and once the first couple of drafts are done 95% of 2000s players will be gone from the NHL. I know that there will always be some familiar names who don't belong into the 1980s but I think that is a necessary sacrifice. I thought about it, but you simply won't find adequate information about minor league players from back then to add them into the db.

Any other questions? Just ask.

btw, I think I've made some minor changes to this thing since that fourth version. If you want to, I can upload it.

Pens66: Thank you very much for all the work you did with the 79-80 database.

You aren't kidding about the histories taking forever. I started doing it for the Canadiens. Figured I would do it for 'my" team and it wouldn't take long. Doing one was enough to make me stop for a while.

I ran into the same problem with junior league information you had. There really isn't a lot out there.

I would love a copy of your newest version. :)

I started to make histories to top players, and it's quite fun.

I have no idea really. I corrected many small things which I thought needed some work while simply playing the mod. I did not make a list of what was corrected/changed.

I added some histories or edited them where I found mistakes. I also tried to make the all-time lists correct for the time period and fiddled around with the Soviet players (ratings and contracts). I corrected some spelling mistakes, stuff like that. Just download and see for yourself what's in there. Star players that are high in all-time lists today should have their histories.

I have edited players and their career stats in 79-80db and i have a problem: why stats have disappeared from some players (i have comfirmed all changes and saved everytime)?

I have made for example Hannu and Jari Kapanen and their stats has disappeared. I have also made Reijo Ruotsalainen, whom stats have gone crazy: in 79-80 he was 19 year old (that's right), but in his stats he has played last year in QMJHL and before QMJHL he has played 2 years in Poprad, Slovakian league, where he hasn't played!!! Why the game do this?? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-? :-?

When saving close the editor and load DB again.. this way you will keep all editions to secure.
I personally save changes every hour.
Thanks! It's only sad that i can't play my 79-80 db cause error comes when i start new game. the error text is something like: error sm-league file, error hpk hämeenlinna file and error tampereen ilves file.

maybe i have to start to update 79-80 db again, first to download it and then update, but let's see when i start to make it, cause that 98-99 db is great!

p.s. only minus is that jari kurri hasn't career stats, but i make it myself and i make contract with him (like i said before, i play with rangers) and i have gretzky-kurri in 1st line. left winger has been petr nedved, adam graves and sometimes esa tikkanen.
