Nailed down the President's Cup in season two! :joy:

Finished with 104 points with the same lines consistently in place since the Cole acquisition:

Wolski - Stastny - Hejduk
Cole - Duchene - Svatos
Hensick - Durno - Stewart
McLeod - Stoa - Jones

Hannan - Martinek
Quincey - Holos/Clark
Liles - Clark/Holos

Anderson has been my primary netminder, but Budaj has also played well of late. Hopefully we can go deep, and I don;t fall into a funk like I did mid-season.

Bring on the Wings!!!!!!!!!!!

Awards time!

Stastny : Ross, Calder 1st runner-up, All Rookie Team
Wolski : Calder 2nd runner-up
Hedjuk : Byng

Funny stuff...

Laraque won the Selke!

Osgood won the Vezina. It's only funny because of Batdad's debates with win Red Wings fans in the Lidas Update threads. In the game he actually deserved it. He had one of the lowest GAAs, most wins, highest average rating, and 15 shutouts.

How does Stastny win the Ross but come in 2nd in the Calder race? And how does he only make the All Rookie Team instead of one of the All Star Teams?

In my award ceremony:

Stastny: Calder winner, 1st Rookie All-Star Team
Wolksi: Calder 1st runner up, 1st Rookie All-Star Team

Calgary seemed to have great defense my first season:
Mikka Kiprusoff was named goalie in the First All-Star Team and Vezina winner.
Dion Phaneuf was named defenseman in the First All-Star Team and Norris winner.
Jay Bouwmeester was named defenseman in the First All-Star Team.

Now back to my second season:
In the first segment I had 7 wins, 10 losses and 3 OTLs, in the second segment I had 7 wins, 10 losses and 3 OTLs and now in 15th. ](*,)

So the Kings won the Draft Lottery in my game and will pick 1st. That's fine, they finished in last place and deserve the pick. But they also signed Zherdev to a 2 year deal in early June 2007. So they should be looking much better next season. Zherdev may be a flake in real life but he's got some strong attributes in EHM. Honestly, I don't understand how they finished so poorly. I could've won the President's Trophy in the first season with their roster.

None of the players are exhausted or even tired, so it shouldn't be my training. And as I said earlier, I have reduced aggressiveness, hitting and even backchecking of my units, they are on normal and easy except for my "checking line". There may still be some reason for it somewhere, I just can't see it.
batdad wrote:Practice schedule? That is nuts Kuulapaa. Can you even dress a full roster?
Yes I can, kind of. The players I'm using makes a full roster although they don't fill the skates and jerseys I'm putting them in :-D

In some sick way this is getting interesting. Nearly can wait the next game to see what happens and to whom...

It'll be nice to get back to my game tonight. I didn't make any FA signings, as I've been waiting for someone to pop up on waivers. I almost grabbed Bergenheim from the Isles, but PHX snapped him up first. I'm just about at Oct 15th of Season two, so I'll likely be making my trade shortly. Gotta do something about that LW - and if I can add a 3-4 D too, I'll be happy. :-D

So I drafted at #23. I thought Jon Merrill was going to fall all the way down to my position but he got snatched up at #18, even though he was ranked #10. Hall and Fowler went #1 and #2 but Seguin fell to #5. Kitsyn and Kabanov went before him.

I ended up taking Quinton Howden with my first round pick. He was ranked 20th and I got him at #23. Not bad. He's a big 2-way LW with 1st line potential. He played for Saskatoon in the WHL.

In the second round I ended up going with a defenseman. I took RD, Danny Biega. His low determination worries me but he had the best upside of any of the remaining available defensemen. He's a 2-way defenseman with #5-6 potential. My scouts compared him to a smaller but better version of Kurt Sauer. He's a good skater, brave, and aggressive. He needs to get stronger though. He's got a great work rate. He could work out for me. He'll be playing for the University of Maine in August.

In the 3rd round I was still looking to add some sandpaper to my team. I found 6'4" RW Yasin Cisse. He's a 3rd line checking forward that my scouts compare to a more talented, offensive-minded Eric Godard. He checks, he hits, he's got character. I like him! He's currently playing in Quebec Junior AAA Hockey League for the Joliette Traffic (and affiliate of the Drumondville Voltigeurs). He had 116 points in 60 games there. Strangely, he's set to join the Michigan Wolverines in August. Let's see how he does there. His rights aren't held by any CHL team, so I might just leave him in college.

In the 4th round I grabbed Thane Heller. He's a 6'1" winger from Boston, MA. He's got decent size and he's an amazing skater. One of my scouts compare him to a poor man's Milan Michalek. They say he's a skilled forward with 3rd line potential. We'll see how good he actually turns out. If he were on my roster right now he'd already be one of the team's top skaters, so there is hope. He joins the University of New Hampshire in August.

In the 5th round I took Brock Beukkeboom. He's a 6'2" defensive defenseman that plays the right side. Of course he has NHL bloodlines. My scouts say he's got #5-6 potential and compare him to a more talented version of Aaron Johnson. He's playing for the Soo Greyhounds in the OHL.

I guess we get 2 5th round picks? I may have found a hidden jewel here. Gasper Kopitar. Is it safe to assume he is related to Anze Kopitar? Well Anze isn't in his favorite staff but Matjaz Kopitar, the GM of Jesenice is listed as one of his favorite staff. Anyhow, Gasper Kopitar is a Slovenian that is currently playing for Portland of the WHL. My scouts say he is a 2-way forward with 4th line potential and compare him to a poor-man's Rob Niedermayer. He's a good skater with nice agility. He's both aggressive and brave. He's also determined. So he might not look like a superstar but his report card is all A's and B's. So go figure! He's a natural center and doesn't play any other positions. I might have to try to train him in another position but then again, maybe he'd be a perfect 4th line center that also plays the PK? I really like this pick!

In the 6th round I took Iiro Pakarinen. He's a Finnish winger with decent size. My scouts say he's a quick forward with 3rd line potential but compare him to Scott Hartnell. He's got great acceleration and he's aggressive. He's worth a chance with a 6th round pick.

And with my final pick I took Andrei Kuchin. He's a speedy Russian LW/C. My scouts say he's a skilled offensive forward with 3rd line potential. They either compare him to a poor man's Nigel Dawes or Jeff Tambellini. He's also 19 years old already. He's worth a shot with a 7th round pick. He's currently playing for the Chicago Steel of the USHL, so he's already in North America. His rights aren't owned by any junior club though. So who knows what will be done with him. Maybe I'll just sign him and send him down to Lake Erie?

So that's my draft! WOW! Long post but I didn't do a blog this time and I love the draft.

Just finished the first season.

After a slow start the team really started to play good hockey in the middle of the season.
Wolski - Stastny - Hejduk, was on fire and Budaj too. But when I lost Stastny 1 month i mid-january due to injury the team started to struggle... badly. The forwards were ineffective and both Budaj and Anderson were shaky between the pipes.
I had like 7 straight losses, then won one game, only to lose 6-7 straight games again. Earlier I thought our playoffspot was safe but after all these losses the Coyotes came really close to grab our spot.

However when captain Stastny was back on the ice the team started to play better, and finally we finished 8th. STANLEY CUP HERE WE COME! :)

Yeah right :P Lost 4 straight games versus Flames who later won the Stanley Cup.

Quincey and Stastny were both named to the Rookie All-Star Team, and Hejduk won Lady Byng Trophy.

Oh! I almost forgot! Martin Brodeur got a long time injury in february and later decided to end his career. Good luck next season Devils ;)

I have to admit that by adding a few bigger, checking forwards, this team is rocking.

I have also had impressive performance from 19/20 year old Tyson Barrie.

He was on the team, I signed him and now he's playing really solid 3rd pairing and PP duty.

Waahh.....I lost in the Western Final to Detroit 4 games to 3. That is the first time I have not made it to the Stanley Cup Final in like years.

Oh well...11 wins in the playoffs and a Pres Trophy from this naff team is something else.

On to awards etc.

SC Final is Detroit-Buffalo.

Beaten by Batdad....again, no surprise though. ](*,)

Now you and B72 stop being so good at this game. :-x :-p

Hensick is finally back after some weeks of back-to-back injuries, first he was out for 12 days and in his first match back from that injury he gets out for 2 weeks with another.

I wish we had a vampire emotion, but this is the closest to a bite I'll get :bull:

Yes. Lidas can score goals, but Lidas cannot make any saves...
(funny, its just the opposite to our current fantasy hockey game)

Heh. No doubt. Making saves no matter as much in this as does in fantasy hockey. :-D scoring goals matters more.

Pesonally I'm not impressed by batdad's defensive numbers at all, it's all fluke unless he proves he can get those kind of numbers with a Raycroft/Cloutier tandem :D
So, I challenge you Sir Crankalot :-p

So this will be my first season with both Duchene and O'Reilly on the team. What's the general consensus? Are most ppl using Duchene as 2nd line C and PP and O'Reilly as 3rd C and PK?

Hmmm...I will have to think about that Princess Daniella.

Getting to the draft here now.

Trophies

NHL--Stanley Cup: Detroit Red Wings (runner up-Buffalo Sabres)
AHL-Calder Cup-Peoria Rivermen (Runner up-Wilkes Barre-Scranton Penguins)
ECHL-Kelly Cup-Rochester Americans (runnier up-Bakersfield Condors)
Memorial Cup-Windsor Spitfires (runner up-Calgary Hitmen)
World Champ-Gold: Czech Rep, Silver: USA, Bronze: Canada
World Jr Champ-Gold:Russia Silver: Canada Bronze: Sweden

Art Ross Trophy--Milan Michalek 34-72-106
Calder Trophy -- Mike Green Washington
Jack Adams ===Mike Babcock (runner up-Joe Sacco)
Rocket Richard-Ilya Kovalchuk 48 Goals
Vezina-Petr Budaj (Anderson 2nd, and I voted for him, since used him in playoffs)
Jennings-Budaj Anderson 2nd

Here is the kicker

1st All Star-Craig Anderson
2nd All Star-Petr Budaj

What?

Also it is clear the teams in my game are more defensive in response to my defense. 48 goals, 106 pts lead the league.Almost realistic, save for Micalek being the top point getter.

On to the draft.

So much for having the best record. Got bounced 4-1 by the Blues in round two. Didn't help that I lost Duchesne after game one of the Detroit series or three months. Sabres (who were 2nd overall in the NHL behind Colorado) won the Cup over Nashville (!).

As far as awards:

Art Ross - Stastny (Hejduk runner-up)
Jack Adams - Sacco came in third, earning him an extension
'Rocket' Richard - Milan Hejduk
Plus-Minus - Hannan

Well! Finally finished my first 20 - darn life!!

Terrible first 20 - 7-9-4 - when we won, it was by OT or SO, when we lost, we lost big. We started well enough, 4-1-2, but then went on a supreme 9 game losing streak hahaha...

Stastny has been pretty bad, which shows you that I have no clue what I am doing. He and Hensick are tied for 5th in team scoring :-o . I can't get Stastny to play, but Willsie has my highest +/- :-k

Thankfully, playing the Wild always makes me feel better, LOL

So has (or had, since y'all are so far ahead, and playing so much better  ) everyone gone for the big line and hoped to get 2nd line scoring? I usually try to get 2-3 balanced lines and count on the PP, but its not working ](*,)

For a while, until injuries, I had some success fielding 2 lines of:
Hensick/Willsie - Stastny - Hedjuk
Willsie/Hensick/Durno - Wolski - Svatos

but I can't get that 'magic' back...

Galiardi has stunk, and Tucker has already been called out by the media, LOL.

Here's to a better 20 next time :toast:

Well, just finished season 2, and frustration is mounting. I think after this challenge i'm going to have to spend some time with the team going through every possible way of doing things to see what works and what doesn't. I thought I was decent with tactics, but I guess playing as the Flames makes it easy (although i won multiple cups with the Thrashers awhile ago...). I tried all sorts of things, but consistency, penalties, and special teams killed me. For some reason I couldn't get anyone to stop taking penalties, and led the league by a long shot (even without Koci, who I demoted to AHL, due to his inability to stay out of the box). There was some good and some bad this season, and it was a slight improvement from the first.

The Good
- Everyone but my checking line and a couple stragglers and a D-man (Liles = sucks, even in 5 games) had a positive +/-. (Not so good for the checking line, but that's a different story).
- The top line clicked much better, seemingly, although Stastny and Hejduk both lost 8 games to injury. Stastny's absence really killed me, I think I only won 2 of those games. Wolski led the way with 102 points, and Stastny and Hejduk had 91 and 87 respectively. Still seems like garbage looking at other people's stats, but comparatively, i'm happy.
- Second line provided some scoring finally. Comrie ended up with an above 7 rating and got some points, although not quite as much as I had hoped for, while remaining +11. Duchene had over 60 points and improved his +- from last year big time, as well as got a higher rating. Svatos was injured for almost 20 games, but still almost managed a point per game.
- Used Ryan Wilson on my third pairing and second once in awhile and his rating was over 7, very pleased with that, as Foote retired before the season started. I had originally put a late draft pick, Bidlevskki in, but he wasn't quite ready, so he is now doing well in the CHL.
- Hensick led the AHL in goals and points, with Haydar right behind him. Kitsyn, who I drafted in the first round, led rookies in scoring in the AHL. The top line really impressed me even if the rest of the team looked like a peewee team.
- Shattenkirk and Holos played very solidly on Lake Erie, did not disappoint being on the top line and on PP/PK.
- There are also a number of very high scoring defensemen in the system, but we'll see if they amount to anything, too often they dry up in the big leagues

The Bad
- Lots
- Inconsistency. I would win 3 in a row and think things were great, then lose a bunch, with no seeming rhyme or reason. I would outshoot, outhit, outscore, a good team one day, then lose brutally and get no shots while giving up 40 the next to a rubbish team. Gotta figure something out tactically.
- Liles is a waste of space, have to work him into next season's trade.
- I was hoping O'Reilly would be able to anchor the third line and play some special teams, but after 9 games and no points with a low 6 rating, I decided to send him back down to Erie. Not so bad was the fact that he scored 115 points in 46 games and is currently putting up 3 points per game in the playoffs. It would have been nice to see that in the NHL.
- Special teams were very likely the reason I did not make the playoffs and instead found myself 5 points out. After reading the special teams thread and trying things out, I have in most other games been able to keep my PP in the high teens and my PK in the high 80s to low 90s, which is enough to keep you in and win games usually. However, no matter who I put on the lines, no matter what combinations I used, no matter what I did from the thread, nothing clicked. PP less than 10% and I had the most opportunities in the league. PK less than 80% and I gave up the most PPs in the league. Very frustrating, not sure what the problem is, Wolski, Stastny, Duchene, Svatos, and Hejduk should pop in a few now and then.

Anyways, long post short, lots to work on but a few bright bits to work from.
Hopefully the AHL will be a good stepping stone for some guys in the year or couple to come...also have to find out why my tactics don't work and figure out what kind of FA/trade will benefit me the most... :nerd:

cheers to the gawd-awfullest segment I've ever had, LOL

4-13-3... power outage and goalie flop... geez...

and all the attempts at better tactics, made things worse, LOL

Come to think of it, when I went to personal tactics, my team started stinking :(

Well, can't be as bad as this one, right?
