Can anybody help me simulate a one season game?

Post by archibalduk »

After I complete the site design (hopefully within the first half of 2010), I plan on looking into how we can update the player attributes in Lidas' rosters. It would be very difficult to accurately update every single player attribute without setting up a complex network of scouts like SI had and then somebody would have to enter every single change using the editor (whereas SI could mass import changes as they started off with something like an MS Access Database).

What I am wondering is if we could more generally alter a smaller range of player attributes and still get reasonably accurate performances ingame. Taking the idea even further, I was wondering if we could work out some sort of Excel formula which would modify a small range of player attributes to adjust their ingame performances to a level similar to their real life performance. Although this might not be as accurate as individual scouting would be, it would be more workable in practice and would hopefully make some players perform more accurately ingame. I don't know whether this is possible but I definitely think it is worth investigating.

The first step in this project is to simulate a season using the Lidas 1.3 08/09 rosters and compare the NHL players' season stats with their real life 08/09 stats. To get an accurate picture, the season will need to be simulated more than once. I think three times is a minimum but five times is more desirable.

To keep things consistent, I will have to create a human GM for each team. This will ensure that players are not traded, etc. Then I will set the game in vacation mode to quickly simulate one season. At the end of the season I will save the player stats to text files and import these into Excel.

As there is a limit of 16 human GMs in one EHM game, I am going to split the simulations into East and West Conferences. So I will set up five saved games where all of the East teams are human GMs in vacation mode and then I will set up a further five saved games where all of the West teams are human.

Setting up and simulating ten lots of one season is going to be rather time consuming for one person. Therefore I was wondering if there were any users who would be kind enough to simulate one season for me. I will set up the saved game for you so all you would have to do is put the game in vacation mode and then using the "print" option in EHM, export the player stats for 15 NHL teams (and their AHL affiliate teams. I won't bother with ECHL affiliates as it means another league to simulate and another set of stats to print) at the end of the first regular season. This will allow me to continue working on the site design in the meantime. Then, when I have completed the site design I can get stuck into this possible project.

So, to summarise:
  • I will run five saved games for each Conference (i.e. ten saved games in total).
  • For each saved game, a human GM will be assigned to all 15 teams for the particular Conference.
  • The game will be set to vacation mode to run until 16 April 2007 ingame.
  • Using the "print" option, stats for each of the 15 Conference teams and their AHL affiliates will be exported.
The games will be set up with NHL and AHL as enhanced but all of the rest as disabled so the season will be simulated as quickly as possible.

Please let me know if you're willing to help.

Hey Archi,

How quickly are you looking for simulations to be done? I'd be glad to sim one and export, but I have a family visit and trip and likely wouldn't be able to sim a season until the new year. So, sadly, if you're looking for results quickly, I won't be able to help.

Just wanted to say that I'd love to help, if it works - I really like the idea!

There's no real rush at the moment. As I'm working on the site design I won't have time to really do much on this project until the summer. I'm just hoping to get the initial simulation done now so that it's all ready for when I pick it up again next year. I'm doing one East simulation now and will leave it to do a West one later today. It has taken 2hrs 20mins to simulate one season.

We'll see if anybody else volunteers and how many simulations we have completed before the new year. If in the new year we still need to do some and you're available then let me know. Thank you for the offer

Here's a guide on how to get the game set up:

1) I will send the saved game to you. I am going to create a new saved game from scratch for each test season. The human managers will have been added for you.

2) When you open EHM, go to the Preferences screen. Change the "Print to" setting to "HTML". See the screenshot below for more info:

Image

3) When you load the game, click on "General Manager" from the top horizontal menubar and from this menu click on "General Manager Options". Set the options according to the screenshot below (the red dots in screenshot indicate which settings need to be changed from their default". Click on "Select date" (bottom right corner of this GM Settings Window) and choose 16 April 2007. Then click on "Go on Vacation". This will put the human GM into vacation mode. Do this for each GM and then the game will start simming until it reaches 16 April 2007.

Image

4) When the game reaches 16 April 2007, save the game and then start exporting the stats.

5) Broadly speaking, there are four sets of stats that need to be exported:
  • NHL league regular season stats
  • AHL league regular season stats
  • NHL team skater regular season stats
  • AHL team skater regular season stats
You will find more info on how to print the stats and exactly what stats are needed below. At the moment I am not going to worry about goalie stats.

6) Please send the saved game back to me. You can upload it to something like Rapidshare and send me the link via a personal message.

Here are more details about what stats are required and how to print them:

NHL and AHL regular season stats

1) Go to the NHL standings screen.
2) In the right hand corner you will see a drop down menu titled "Stage". Click on this and it will show you the NHL regular season league standings.
3) In the bottom left, click on "Print" and select the "All" option.
4) Repeat these steps with the AHL regular season standings.

Follow the instructions below for all 15 NHL teams in the Conference you have been assigned (i.e. East or West) and for every AHL (not ECHL) team affiliated to those NHL teams:

1) Go to the team's roster page.
2) Click on the "Statistics" button from the left hand menu.
3) In the top right corner above the stats table, click on the "Scope" button and select "Regular Season". Note that it is vital you do this otherwise it will print the Playoff stats.
4) Click on "Print" and select the "Stats" option.
5) Give the file a fairly descriptive name, e.g. AHL - Phi for Philadelphia Phantoms, NHL - ANA for Anaheim Ducks, etc.

That's perfect. Thank you for your help Adam

I have sent out more saved games this morning to volunteers. I'll send out saved games to Batdad and Watts this afternoon after I have finished simming a season myself.

Tried sending it via e-mail (18 meg) but it got returned. I didn't have a chance to upload it anywhere this morning but I'll do it when I get home. I started another round this morning so I'll have two to post. Only took me an hour and 50 minutes. Not too bad.

If you have Hotmail or Windows Live account, you should look into their "Sky Drive". It's like a personal space to upload files and allow others to download them. It's a good way for dealing with large files.

Thanks d4m1r. I have sent you a saved game to sim. Thanks to everybody who has volunteered. I have simmed two single season games and eight volunteers are doing a season each. So we have all ten seasons sorted

TBL is running really slow tonight and I can't get the PM function to work.

Here's skydrive links for two more seasons if you need them.
