The DEL.

Post by Go Stingrays »

Anyone else managing in the DEL. I love it. I watched Sheffield Steelers against Iserlohn Roosters last night and realised that German hockey is great and in great shape.

Does anyone play in this league and how well are you doing?

Im currently Krefeld because I remember they won something in 2003 (I dont know why I remembered that!) and Im really enjoying it.!

I managed Koln Haie for a while a few weeks back (I support them in real life, too, as Koln is one of the few German cities I have visited). However after an initially good start I hit a dreaded slump and ended up quitting...

I am managing Eisbaren (and support them, of course). I like this league, too. It was nice to see that guys from SI got the DEL licence for EHM 2005.

Well, I think that shape of German hockey isn't best, for example DEL champion doesn't play any more in European Champions Cup. Last year Frankfurt Lions lost both group games in the same competition. Just one German club won the Spengler Cup since 1928 (Kolner Haie in 1999). But after lots of big problems and affairs during ninetees, I think that league is run well in these days. And the most of the arenas are amazing.

You are right, Go Stingrays, Krefeld Pinguine won the league in 2003...

Depends what kind of team you want?

I think Koln or Dusseldorf have the largest budget so if you want a easyish challenge go for them. But id go for Krefeld or Iserlohn if I were you.

In my net game we have swope dteh german teams with teh uk ones and we play a 14 team uk league. there is about 6 of us human players. it works quite well.

As for DEL it was the first league I played when I first got EHM 2005. I think perhaps the best euro league to play in the game as you are allowed 11 forgners which is quite reasonable. Where as with most other Euro leagues teh import limit can be as low as 3. Though i would love to see teh swiss league get in.

The UK league has 11 imports aswell and being from there I do play it quite a lot but the DEL you can attract better imports and there is more money to work with and it is challenging. i was looking at some of teh Arenas and tehy look great especially mannheim's SAP arena looks amazing i hope to go over there at some point and see a game or two as Ayr and mannheim fans have built up a good friendship. Mannheim are my favourite DEL really because of this friendship and they were the first DEL team I ever seen when Ayr played them in EHL in 1998. We lost the game 5-3 but were unlucky and was greta hockey to watch.

When there was the adherna cup in the uk maybe 2000 or some year like that. Ayr played 2 games. First we played Eisbaren Berlin, the game ended in a draw the next night we played Frankfurt Lions and beat them. The winnign league for the adherne cup that year woudl get presented teh trophy at that game at centrum against frankfurt we did our bit and beat them but other resulyts didn't go the superleagues way and so frankfurt collected teh trophy on behalf of the DEL. It was very close back then but that was british hockey at its peak before its dramatic fall and there is a huge gulf betwwen teh leagues now.

Yeah It is a shame no DEL team in the champions cup this year as Germany wasn't in teh top 6 hopefully they can get back in it.

Though I think it is a silly format to do it by national team rankings. The EHL was much better I remember Ayr beating Kazan home and away and that sent shockwaves round Europe.

Though why did no german teams enter the continental cup this year especially with not being in the champions cup.

Personally I would have the Euro Champions Cup like this
two groups of 4.
Teams form - germany, russia, finland, swdden, czech republic, slovakia, switzerland
The final place should go to the winners of the continental cup basically the best of the rest. Also do not let any teams from the above 7 nations in the continental cup. Lada just walked in the final round this year and won it only playing 3 games and they were from a far stronger league than the others. Big credit to riga of latvia who were runners up though they started right from round 1.

This would work well as it is not based on euro rankings. i think these 7 leagues are a fair bit ahead of the rest at the moment but it would be nice to have teh best of the rest and they would still compete well. The EHL was very reliant on sponsorship adn cut into leagu schedules throughout the season though from a british perspective was amazing to watch. But teh bigger leagues just want a week or so for this and no more.

Also change the venue around rotate it throughout the nations each year have a think like in football where stadiums bid to host the champions cup final each year. Imagine having the champions cup in the SAP arena one year. holding it in St Petersburg is a bit far in the east every yearand gives the russians an advantage every year. Who nows maybe one day one of teh big UK arena's though hosting a continental cup stage would be good too.

What is this Spengler Cup I have seen it metioned before is it some cup between the alpine leagues of europe. I would be grateful if someone could explain how it works and waht team are in it.

Would love to see all these continental competions in EHM would be amazing.

Nice ideas about Euro Champions Cup grazza!

Probably that would be best to have those 8 teams split in two groups and rotate the venues.

About Spengler Cup: The Spengler Cup is the oldest European tournament for club teams. The Cup is played every year in Davos between Christmas and New Year's Eve. Entry to the Cup is by invitation, and is hosted by HC Davos. Five teams participate in the tournament (HC Davos included, and since 1984 Team Canada, usually made up of Canadians playing in Switzerland). After a round-robin series, the top two teams meet in the final game.

Spengler Cup 2005: HC Davos, Team Canada, HC Sparta Prag, EHC Eisbaren Berlin and HC Metallurg Magnitogorsk (winner).

Sorry for bumping the thread but it's quite funny, I remember maby 10 years ago when Davos, Färjestad (who I belive one it), Team Canada and one other team played in that cup and Eurosport aired it. I was not aware of the history of the cup, I just thought it was a friendly tournament that occured just that time. Ah brings back memories.
