Jets 2006 - Ding Dong Bettman's gone.

Post by NMUTarkkifan »

When the NHL was rebuilt after the lock out Gary Bettman was fired and introduce a new commissioner one of the best coaches in Hockey History Scotty Bowman. Scotty then decided to make some radical changes including moving a few franchises. The Phoenix Coyotes moved back to Winnipeg they are once again the Jets. The Hartford Whalers are now around again after the Carolina Hurricanes were replaced, The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim were replaced by the Quebec Nordiques and lastly the Florida Panthers were replaced by the Omaha Chiefs.

Former student to take charge of the Winnipeg Jets

The Calgary Falls native who went to college at Northern Michigan University has been hired has the new General Manager of the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets are hoping that the 22 year old can become a boy genius and bring the team to a championship eventually.

This year he is expected to improve the roster he has said that he is hoping to make some big trades for some prospects.

My current roster as of the Start of the season is

Goalies – Brian Boucher – 28 year old good goalie I find him some one that can be traded for the right goalie prospects. Will probably hold out for a team trying to make a playoff run.

Curtis Joseph – 38 a goalie that is towards the end of his career not very tradable because of his age. We will give him a chance to start but he will be on the tradable list.

David Leneveu – 22 Young player played for AHL Utah most of last year. See him has a goalie that could be the future but I am not very high on him.

Defensemen – Keith Ballard -22 good player out of the Minnesota Hockey system. Can see him has being a potential star.

Denis Gauthier – 28 a Strong defensman that is reaching the prime years of his career he should be one of the bigger players of our defense. Needs to improve his passing if he wants to be a star.

Paul Mara – 25 go defender that can step in right away one of the strengths of the team. Expect him to get a lot of minutes.

Zbynek Michalek – 22 versatile defenseman that will be able to step in right away might be sent down to the minors for a while for experience

Sean O’ Donnell – 33 older defenseman will probably be used as Trade bait more of a hitter enforce type player.

Ray Schultz – 28 a rotation player for Red Deer might be a good 3rd defensive pairs man but he is expendable.

Derek Morris – 27 a good pacey defender that will be in the first playing works hard and has very few flaws in his game. Could be a great impact player.

Left Wings

Steve Gainey – 26 minor league player at best to slow for the NHL IMO if some one wants him and gives a good offer I will not hesitate to trade him.

Ladislav Nagy – 26 Fast, gets open and a good Wrist shot any NHL team could find a place for this player he could become a star of the team.

Tyson Nash – 30 decent all around player, I would like to hang on to him for the season but if a good offer comes he is not that valuable.

Petr Nedved – 33 still has a lot of speed in his legs still can play at the NHL level. I do wonder if he will be good for the future if some one wants to trade a good prospect for him.

Geoff Sanderson – 33 Great speed will work well in the system has good all around ability’s has been known to be passive. But the Age is still a factor in my decision making.

Oleg Saprykin – 24 one of the future forwards of the team. Fast gets open good shooting skills and is still improving.

Center

Mike Comrie – 24 Young skilled player that will be a center piece for the future. We will be unwilling to trade him unless it’s a great offer.

Jamie Lundmark – 24 has great speed and skating , needs to work on his intangibles might stay up might got to minors.

Pascal Rheaume – 32 decent player might make a 4th line forward probably a minor leaguer this year.

Mike Ricci – 33 great intangibles but his skills at this point leave something to be desired has lost a step or two, can still play but might be trade bait down the stretch

Dave Scatchard – 29 Prime of his career has all that you need to be a all around player.

Boyd Deverreaux – 27 reaching his prime kind of passive still unsure what to do with him.

Right Wingers

Shane Doan – 28 Star of the team, has everything you could want and is in the prime of his career. If a good offer comes along he is tradable though

Mike Johnson – 30 good player can be a solid point of the team. Also another one that is between the 28-35 he can be traded but he has a lot of talent.

Mike LeClerk – 28 has good stick skills but he is kind of slow for the system might fit some one else’s better.

Fredrik Sjostrom – 22 Fast young player that can become a great player on the team he might spend some times in the minors.

This team is talented but in my opinion not talented enough for the future I want to be able to build a franchise with this team. I don’t know if a lot of these players are the ones to do it with.

August Recap

Post by NMUTarkkifan »

Transactions

In the month of August the Jets traded for a bunch of younger prospects from the NCAA and former NCAA stars

They snapped up Former CCHA player of the year Tuomas Tarkki from the Gwinnett Gladiators. He is a 6-4 standup positional goalie from Ruma Finland and he gained his reputation has goalie for the NMU Wildcats.

They also snapped up former Michigan Tech and St John’s maple leafs player Colin Murphy. He is a spark plug with good passing even though his size is only 5-11.

They also traded for the rights of some of the Northern Michigan Wildcat Seniors

They acquired Dirk Southern for a 5th round pick. He is a well conditioned Right Wing that has a sense for hitting. Is considered to be a two way forward in the future. He was a 7th round pick in 2003 by the Mighty Ducks

They also acquired Zach Tarkir for a 7th round Pick even though he had a bad sophomore year. He has show good ability but bad decision making. He was a 5th round pick by the Devils in 2003

Nathan Oystrick was acquired for a 4th round pick along with a 7th round pick from the Thrashers. Oystrick is a captain and emotional leader of the team. He has good hockey sense and is said to be the most Pro ready on the NMU team. He was originally a 7th round pick.

Geoff Waugh was acquired along with a 7th round pick for a 5th round pick. The 6-4 strong defenseman has been paired with Oystrick for 4 years now. He has a good sense of hockey.

Darin Olver was traded for the right to Keith Yandle and a 4th round pick. Olver is a playmaking forward that goes down easily some time but can be a future NHL goal scorer.

Winnipeg Also got the rights to another American College Player this time it was 19 year Old TJ Hensick out of Michigan. The 5-10 prospect with good speed. Could be a good playmaker in the NHL level.

They also announced their exhibition schedule for September.

They will face the Northern Michigan Wildcats on September 8 at the MTS Centre. Followed by away games with Columbus Blue Jackets and the Hartford Whalers. Then they will have a special exhibition with CSKA Moscow a Home and Home series they will travel to Russia on the 29th.

September

Transactions

Showing that the new GM wanted to make trades

The Jets traded a 4th round pick in 2006 and a 5th round pick in 2007 for Jed Ortmeyer. The Right winger had a good career at Michigan, had a semi bad Rookie campaign with New York but has showed promise though out his career.

They also traded a 1st round pick in 2008, the stars 7th round pick in 2006 and Jets 7th round pick in 2008 for Evan Mcgrath – A Speedy young player that has all the finesses skill in the world at only 19 he could crack the line up in a lot of NHL teams.

They made another deal with the Red Wings. Logan Stephenson and 6th round picks in 2006 and 2010 for Swedish national goalie Stefan Live and the Red Wings 2nd round pick.
Liv is a great reflex goalie, that has resembled Hasek in the past but he has switched to more of a positional style with the ability to still make a big play.

After there performances in training camp they signed

Trevor Derlago – RW the 22 year old showed a lot of heart in training camp and earned him self a spot on at least the minor league.

Dominic Deblois –RW a strong 21 year old that many has said lack skills but in the QMJHL he had a 70 and a 60 point season.

Chris Carr- LD Another player that showed good ability but mainly heart giving him a contract to see if he develops

Games
Vs Northern Michigan The Came out and dominated scoring 15 goals in a 15-0 blow out.
1st star went to Shane Doan who had 3 goals and 2 assist, 2nd star Paul Mara 2 goals 3 assist and Dennis Gauthier.

O'Donnell doing, like everytime, an awful job ](*,) :-D

Having Raycroft and Toivonen in his team and he trades away the first round draft pick in an excellent draft for an 37 years old goalie!!!

I got the impression that it wasn't a bug. I thought the idea was that you're only contracted for one tournament and then you're out :-?

Ahh Alright it was not that I was worried about. I thought I read some where that if you got fired as manager of USA you also lose you job as Winnipeg coach (or any team for that matter)

Oh right, I'm not sure about that. I heard mentions of that before but I've not idea whether it's true anymore. Perhaps make a backup of your game before accepting the job?

Oct 5 @ MTS Centre, Winnipeg
Blue Jackets 2- 5 Jets

Things started out bad for us as 9 minutes in Sarno got a goal for Columbus to put us down 1-0 Doan would answer back a minute later. Then Letowski would get his at the 11 minute mark. Tonight the hockey version of Theo Epstein was appointed a new position

In a rare occasion, a 22 year old E.T. Allen was put in charge of Team USA Hockey. To make things even weirder he was Canadian. The young manager will have to look for talent quickly in Europe as in 9 days the United States will compete in the Deutschland Cup against Slovkia, Switzerland, Canada and of course Germany. The United States can only use players that are currently in Europe in this cup. Also what makes this interesting is coming up in the Olympics. When Gretzky manages Hockey Canada that means that two General Managers are on the same team, when asked if there would be any wagers between the two Allen responded by saying there might be a couple small friendly wagers. Which then Rick Tocchet handed him a piece of paper.

Deutschland Cup Report

Well to be honest this tournament was a tough pill to swallow I don’t think our team could have played any harder we started out against team Canada with Fred Brathwaite in net. They really gave me a tough lesion into my first international game as they scored two goals in the first 3 minutes. We tied but then they took control again we had a last ditch effort our team played hard but it just was not good enough. Next we faced Germany while they got the jump on us we scored 3 straight goals and a empty netter to safely put it away. Slovakia also gave us a good game eventually they were downed but it was close and took a goal with 3 minutes left to get the lead. Then the heartbreaker came. We face the Swiss, With a chance to seal the tournament. We started off strong after the second we were up 3-1. They came back to score two to take it to overtime. It needed a shoot out and their goalie came up big blocking two straight shots at the end to give them the victory and ultimately they won the tornament.

November
Transactions

Well the market calmed down a little after the month of October. I only made 1 big trade and that was because I started to distrust my goalies. Joseph and Boucher were just not doing there job.

Jets Transfers

The Jets received a 7th round pick in 2007 and Sebastien Caron from Pittsburgh for 7th and 6th round pick. Caron was a 3rd round pick who just as not been able to find playing time for his team. He is a good goalie we happily allow him into our orginzation.

We also recived Chris Kunitz from the Nordiques for Matt Jones. Kunitz is a former Hobey Baker finalist and CCHA player of the year. He lead Ferris state university to the championship of the CCHA.

Curtis Joseph was waived and then picked up by the Edmonton Oliers.

Around the League

Big name FA signings
Theroren Flury well end his career presumably where it started in Calgary

Waiver News
Vladimir Malakhov was picked up by the Cheifs from the Devils.

Trades.

The capitals traded there 3rd and 4th round pick in 07 to LA for goalie Mathieu Giron.

The Blue Jackets received Garrett Stafford from San Jose for Jody Shelly

The Stars received Ian Moran form Boston for the Stars 4th round pick in 06

Buffalo received Chris Campbell from the Islanders for Jay McKee and a 4th round pick in 2006.

Dallas received Steve Poapst from St. Louis for a 5th round pick in 2006

Washington received Qubec’s 4th round draft pick for goalie Brent Johnson.

Qubec also traded Ilya Bryzgalov and Ladislav Smid to Buffalo for Washingtons 3rd round pick in 06, Quebec’s 5th round pick in 06, 4th round pick in 06 and goalie Michael Leighton.

November Games

Well well well the month of November certainly was a turn around for us. We split with the Blue Jackets ironically enough we both took the away games we went back and forth never winning more than two games. But we only lost 2 games in a row once, the thing that helped us we have had a 5 game streak now where we have not failed to obtain a point.

In our goalies after realizing that Joseph and Boucher were not what I wanted I shopped them around in frustration during this period. I called on a old buddy from Northern Tuomas Tarkki. Surprisingly he went 3-1-1 he did not have the lowest goals against average. Two of the games went into over time he kept getting better has his appearances went on. Caron has came in and has went 2-0-1. So far Caron in 5 games with Pittsburgh and Us has not lost yet this year. Our defense so far has been staying strong Paul Mara is making me very happy I did not try to get rid of him 3 goals and 18 assist he is our best offensive defenseman. Also waiver accusation Duvie Westcott has been doing a terrific job with a plus/minus of 8.

Our forwards the first line of Nagy, Doan and Comrie are doing a amazing job both Nagy and Doan have 12 goals and all are above 15 points. The surprise line has been the 4th line of Nathan Robinson, Tambellini and Koltsov have been surprising Robin son has 15 points Koltsov has been great despite having 8 points and Tambellini has 9 points. The 2nd and 3rd line have been doing there job. Can’t really complain with anything they have done.

Even though I must admit I am having thoughts of breaking up the future line. I want to trade Boucher and I am thinking about trading him for a old friend of Jed and Jeff (Plays Hail to the Victors). I also want to bring up Sjostrom since right now he has 23 point in 24 games. Ricci is still available not because I don’t like him but because he really just does not fit our system.

Right now we are sitting atop our division in the pacific tied with the Nordiques in points. We have lowered our cap number to 28 million.
