When to Re-Sign Players in Last Year of Contract

Post by rockville »

Hey all. This is part question, part survey, part grounds for discussion.

When do you re-sign your players in last year of contract? Pre-season, mid-season, around Christmas? :P

My first year as an EHM:er (with Calgary Flames) I only had fringe players in last year, so I waited until February to offer Friesen (rejected) and Lombardi (accepted after some haggling) new contracts. However, this year I have Iginla, Kiprusoff, Phaneuf and a few other key players coming up for renewal, so I want to get it right.

Do the timing of the contract renewal offer matter on the possibility of accepting? Can players get upset and feel under-appreciated over not getting an offer early on in the last season?

Well, thanks, but I did read that thread before posting and I'm not sure that thread doesn't really concern my post since they all seem to be talking about individual players.

I am not wondering about individual players, it was just a general question on signing strategy: In general, would you say the timing of the contract renewal offer matter on the possibility of accepting?

Well the thread is call Standard signing, individual, question thread. So you should post your question there even if you don't have your answer. People here will be pleased to help you with that, me sorry, but I can't help you, I'm signing my players almost everywhere in the year. :-D

Maybe the admin will lock the thread, I don't know, but I prefer to tell you that they don't like when people are starting 100 different threads for one subject. If your not sure about something, take the risk to post your question in the wrong thread instead of starting a new one, we will just help you to find the good place. ;-)

Oh and finally, you can go in the arrivals section to present you!

Yeah, well. Hm. The thread is a bit of a liar. :P Anyway, I know when I'm beaten, I'll throw it into that thread.

To whom it may concern: Please remove/lock/whatever this thread.

The standard signing thread is about the players people tend to always sign in their games and questions about individual players. This one really isn't redundant. I'm going to keep it open.

To answer your question, I usually start to try re-signing players when I get that first news items about players with contracts expiring. At that point, I go through the list, clicking on the players I'm interested in keeping, and offer them contracts. If I have any players that don't agree to a deal after a couple offers, I might wait until the next expiring contracts news item and make them an offer again.

Sometimes when I need to sign my star players I try to sign them as early as I could in the season, so if they got an outstanding season, I've been able to sign them for a cheaper price. :-D If the player was earning 4 millions then make a 150 pts season, he will probably want like 6.5 or even 7. With signing him at the beginning of the season I can save sometimes 1.5 or 2 millions.

Same thing for me and for star prospects it's even more money saving.
If the player thinks your team is his favourite it's sometimes cheaper to let him go to ufa and re-sing him there. Usually players sing much longer and cheaper contracts form free agency.

I've never encounter any problems with my young superstar though. My Hasek regen who's 24 I think earns already 4.5 millions. But his first season at 20 he played 25 games and got something like 20-4-1 with 1.95, .930% and 8.74. Is rookie contract finished at the end of the season. But i've been able to sign him for 3 years. 1.8, 2 and 2.5 per years. I think I'm lucky that I've make him play only the end of the season ( because my starter was bad that year ) because if he have played all the season he would've certainly ask for 3.5 or 4 millions a year. :-D

I think loalty is one key thing in player asking for money and contract lenght. Example my O.Jokinen regen has 20 in loalty and after his entry contract i managed to sing him for 4 years 10.8 mil. and my joe thorton regen (loyalty 2) needed 16 mil. for 4 years.

It's probably not the smartest time to do it but it's the time when I think of it and it's just easy to go down the list on the news item. It's a convenience thing for me.

I try those I want the first time. The "sure-things". If someone denies. I give it a couple of more shots before I don't do anything until after that "last" message you get a month before the contract goes out. Seems to be that many times, players just don't want to discuss during the season.

I try to resign the guys I really want to keep early in July as soon as you are allowed to offer a contract. I'll haggle for about a month and if I can't get a deal I'll try sometime after the season starts. I'll keep trying every few months but if it looks impossible I'll try to trade UFA's before the trade deadline. RFA's I'll ususally keep and try to wait them out in summer. If they go to arb and get too good of a deal that causes me cap issues I'll look to trade them. Usually works for me cause I generally pay players what they are worth to me and that's usually enough to get a deal done.

It's been pretty rare for me to trade my UFA, even if the guy suck. Sometimes the guy don't want to sign a contract but if you go far in the playoffs, then he will re-sign with you. I've never been able to sign somebody in July, the never want to negociate at this time of the year...for me though. :-(

I generally sign players on the NHL roster (I say that because I almost always play an NHL team) at around the beginning of the season. It has been successful for me since if I can lock up most of the players I want then it makes them easier to move in June for picks, or package some regular players and picks for a piece to the puzzle for next year.

Players often are gonna ask for slightly more if you wait longer to re-sign them. It depends on the player status and his role on the team for me personally. I want my key players locked up long term and as soon as possible, so those guys have their contracts extended sometimes even before the new season starts, means about a year in advance.
But in most cases I do it at some point between the trade deadline and the playoffs, and sometimes even after the playoffs. Depends on the alternatives on the trade/UFA market and on who's doing well on my affiliate team.
And with some players who only have one or two good seasons in their resume I wanna see if they can keep it up before handing them a big long term deal so I usually don't re-sign them until after the playoffs.
On another note, too bad the AI isn't all that good, dumping awful contracts is way too easy, so you don't really have to pay for the mistakes you make for instance when you re-sign a young RFA to a long conract and he turns out to be a bust.

If I do an error, witch don't happen really often. 8-) I try to keep the guy, to make this more realistic, so it make more difficult to sign others good players or stay close to the cap.

I've made a cool discovery on how to sign top players for cheaper.

I had Jake Virtanen in his contract year. He wanted $10m/yr. I couldn't sign him, waited until after July 1st, he went for arbitration, so I found a team with a high payroll near the cap ($70m+), where they wouldn't be able to sign him. Traded him there for a handful of draft picks. Then late in the summer, near the end of training camp, I signed him back with an offer sheet for just over $6m, having to payout a couple less draft picks for the offer sheet. I saved near $4m a year, and earned a couple draft picks with this trick.

On another note, once upon a time mid season I found I was able to sign McDavid on his second contract for around $6m/yr for four years, but if I waited or wanted more years, I had to pay out a lot more. I think there's a time around Christmas or so when you can offer some top young players a bridge contract and get a better deal, but if you want a long term deal straight up, I think it's close to market value, unless you trade/offersheet them as I note above. In this case, McDavid suggested his terms, around $6m/4yrs, and using the save game/reload game to test the waters, I found there was nothing shorter or longer where he'd accept less. So it was his offer of a bridge deal, not mine, that was the best offer I could land.

There are numerous ways to "cheat" against the AI. Some choose to use them. Others don't. I personally would not do that.

Yea obviously. Don't care to debate your video game ethics, just sharing some knowledge. What is fun for me is different than you, and that's okay, right?

He exactly said the same thing...no need to be blunt about it. We all play differently and that's always been the case. Though most regular users like Tasku and I don't do this kind of tactics because we think it breaks the realism of the game but everyone can play the way they want, it's a game.
