Sky Sports to broadcast Elite Ice Hockey League games

News posted: 31-08-2007

Question - What is the best way to start the 2007/08 bmibaby Elite League season?

Answer – announce a new TV deal with Sky Sports.

Ice hockey fans the length and breadth of the UK have been waiting for the day that Elite Ice Hockey would be broadcast. The waiting is over with the announcement that Sky Sports have entered into a contract with the bmibaby Elite Ice Hockey League.

Paul Scivill, Managing Director of Televideo, in association with Neal Coupland of the Sports Channel were central to the negotiations and advised that “We are delighted to be producing a weekly show. This is a great opportunity to showcase Ice Hockey on Sky Sports and at Televideo we have strong experience in delivering high quality sports programmes. Ice Hockey will be no different to our other programmes and we expect that the format and content of the show will be refined during the initial period of production.”

It is planned to have 31 weekly programmes during the 2007/08 season hopefully featuring every club at some time in their home venue. The show will focus on a single game each week, however it is expected that a highlights summary of action from around the league will be incorporated into the format. The show will be broadcast initially on Thursday evenings at 5.00 pm on Sky Sports Xtra with a repeat on Friday morning.

“This is one of the most significant steps forward for the league. The exposure on Sky Sports will, I am certain, be a very positive impact on the clubs and their sponsors” reported Eamon Convery, league chairman. Who went on to advise that “One of the biggest rivalries in the sport is between Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers. It is thrilling that the first televised game will therefore be between these great teams in Sheffield on the 12th September with the programme being broadcast the next day Thursday 13th September at 5.00.”
It's finally announced on the EIHL website...

Ha ha, very small world. You won 7-4 in the end. My team was awful but we have a lot of guys who have just started and we haven't even had a full side down for a training yet. It all kicked off in the 3rd, a basic, run of the mill scrap went on and then when the players went off to the changing room it continued. Our player broke his ankle and is still in hospital at Manchester. And that lad is the son of Perry Doyle, the ex Steelers' goon, so it's a good thing he wasn't watching or someone would have been killed! I must say I was incredibly disappointed with Manchester's rink, I know I am priveliged to play at iceSheffield but I cannot believe that is a new rink. The ice is poor and the showers are freezing. :thdn:

haha, the showers are freezing, there are warm 1's, but there in the full teams dressing room, but u need to sneak in there, which did u use, the 1s in the corner of the rink?

who broke his ankle? how he do that? Perry Doyle? cant say as ive heard of him :dunno:

i noticed that they didnt resurface after the first period, which i thought stupid, and then during the 2nd intermission the zamboni stopped working half way round, the person that did had to go back round again, ridiculous. :thdn:

and i didnt notice that the picture of ur avatar is you :-D i recognised u as having the 2 patches stitched into the left side of ur shorts

We were in the corner of the rink, yes, that sounds right, two changing rooms directly next to each other, yours and ours. Our player, Sam Doyle broke his ankle. He had a fight with one of your guys and then they got sent off. On the way off they were mouthing at each other, our lad went to our room, your guy followed. Then it all kicked off, from the bench I could just see a blur of arms and bodies. Apparently someone jumped on him and that broke it. His dad is Perry Doyle, pretty tough customer back in his playing days. The game was frankly a farce, too many penalties by Blaine Evans, but I expected that. :thdn:

Is there still a spot on the ice where you can see the sand underneath the ice?

Scores from around the league(all exhibition matches):
Coventry Blaze 3-5 Newcastle Vipers
Basingstoke Bison 7-3 Bracknell Bees(EPL)
Hull Stingrays 5-1 Cardiff Devils :-D
Belfast Giants 3-3 Huddinge(SWE)
Nottingham Panthers 5-4 Epinal(FRA)

Couple of interesting scores, didn't expect Coventry to lose, and Hull battered Cardiff which I enjoyed :-D Although Cardiff were without 4 of their imports as they haven't arrived yet, although Hull lost a couple of theirs in the final period

Yep that is me in all my glory. They're actually my second favourite pair of shorts, my others are blue CCM Supra game worn Edmonton Oilers ones, very oldschool, but it's apparently illegal not to have matching colours so I wear the black ones.

Steelers beat Manchester 4-1 apparently.

there is, it needs to be sorted, its so unprofessional, theyve added hanging plasma screens in front of the stands, must of cost a lot, cheaper than a jumbotron though, and theyve added arcade games (why? :dunno:)

ye everythin has to be in sync with every other player, bit stupid, every1 has black shorts, when you pass, you dont just look at the shorts, but, rules are rules

we still have the old jerseys too, waiting for the new 1s to be given to us,

First round of games:
Basingstoke Bison 1 Coventry Blaze 4
Belfast Giants 2 Edinburgh Capitals 1
Hull Stingrays 2 Newcastle Vipers 3 (After Penalty Shootout)
Nottingham Panthers 2 Manchester Phoenix 0
Sheffield Steelers 5 Cardiff Devils 1

Basingstoke are down 3 imports, otherwise it would've been closer in their game. Not sure what happened with Cardiff but apparently Cornish won a fight!! :-o
Phoenix were OK defensively but poor offensively which could be the story of our season I feel.
We've got Basingstoke tomorrow and if they're still 3 imports down we need to take advantage in our first home game of the season.
Nice to see Hull & Edinburgh starting off competitively, even if they didn't win they look better than last season.

Also
Blaze 4-2 Steelers in the 2nd
Vipers 4-2 Panthers end of the 2nd
Capitals 4-2 Stingrays in the 2nd
Devils 4-1 Giants

Looks like Devils have recovered from their defeat last night, Capitals are playing well and Vipers may be the season's surprise team. Blaze look strong against a good Steelers team as well.

Payette and Shymr had a fight after 5 seconds in the Vipers match! :-D
