March 1st

The IceDogs travel to play the Belleville Bulls. Jesse McCullough stopped all 22 shots he faced in the game to record his fourth shutout of the season, and the IceDogs scored two goals to secure the victory!

The Niagara IceDogs have clinched a berth in the OHL Playoffs!



Former IceDogs center Francois Semenov has committed to play for the Ryerson Rams of Canadian Interuniversity Sport!



March 2nd

IceDogs winger Stacy Vermette resumes full contact practices after recovering from his neck strain.



March 3rd

The IceDogs return home to play host to the Brampton Battalion. Jesse McCullough stopped all 33 shots he faced in the game to record his fifth shutout of the season, and the IceDogs finally won in the shootout!

Brampton 0, Niagara 1 (SO) Defenseman Raphael McKanna scored the shootout winner.

First star honours would go to Niagara IceDogs goaltender Jesse McCullough, who posted a 33 save shutout. Second star would go to Brampton Battalion goaltender Elie Garland, who posted a 25 save shutout. Third star would go to Niagara IceDogs defenseman Raphael McKanna, who played 27:56, was Even, and had 2 shots on goal, 6 hits, and 3 shot blocks, as well as scoring the shootout winner.



March 4th

Plymouth Whalers defenseman Arlen Mercier is named OHL Player of the Week. In 3 games he scored a goal, and 5 assists.



March 5th

Former IceDogs defenseman Braxton Andrews has signed a 1 year contract extension worth $13K with the Arizona Sundogs (CHL).



March 6th

IceDogs winger Cedric Grant resumes full contact practices after recovering from his fractured shin.



March 8th

The IceDogs remain at home to play host to the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors. Jesse McCullough stopped all 28 shots he faced to record his third straight shutout, and sixth of the season, and the IceDogs scored twice to secure the victory!

March 9th

The IceDogs travel to play the Oshawa Generals. Backup goaltender Sidney Soucy will get the start in goal for Niagara. Sidney Soucy stopped 24 of the 28 shots he faced, but Generals netminder Deven Moyer shut the door on the IceDogs in the victory!

First star honours would go to Oshawa Generals center Jean-Francois Danyluk, who scored two goals, and an assist. Second star would go to Oshawa Generals goaltender Deven Moyer, who posted a 31 save shutout. Third star would go to Oshawa Generals winger Vinny Blight, who recorded an assist.



March 10th

The Owen Sound Attack and Erie Otters have clinched berths in the OHL Playoffs!



March 11th

The IceDogs travel to play the Peterborough Petes. Jesse McCullough stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced, and though the Petes scored first, the IceDogs scored two late goals in the third period to take the victory!

March 15th

The IceDogs return home to play host to the Barrie Colts. Backup goaltender Sidney Soucy will get the start in goal for Niagara. Sidney Soucy stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced, and the IceDogs scored late in the third to force overtime, where IceDogs winger Leiland Lirette emerged as the overtime hero!

The IceDogs remain at home to finish off the season, playing host to the Belleville Bulls. Jesse McCullough stopped all 11 shots he faced to record his seventh shutout of the season, and the IceDogs scored twice to back him up!

The Oshawa Generals have won the Hamilton Spectator Trophy as OHL Regular Season Champions!

Former IceDogs defenseman Roger Cote has announced his decision to retire, as he cannot support himself playing professional hockey. He never played a professional hockey game!

The Niagara IceDogs play their first game of the Memorial Cup against WHL Runners-Up Spokane Chiefs. Sidney Soucy stopped 28 of the 32 shots he faced, and though the score was tied 2-2 after one period, the Chiefs scored two more goals to take the victory!

The IceDogs play their final game of the Memorial Cup Round Robin against the WHL Champion Moose Jaw Warriors. Sidney Soucy stopped 22 of the 26 shots he faced, and though the IceDogs scored late in the third to tie the game 3-3, just seconds later Moose Jaw scored to claim the victory!

The IceDogs announce the signing of defenseman Walker Drouin to play his overage season with the IceDogs next season. Drouin played in 68 games with the IceDogs this season, putting up 43 (13+30) points, and was -3, with 76 penalty minutes.

2008 OHL Priority Selection Revisited



Now that the 2008 draft class has left the league, we take a look back at my draft picks and see how they did!



1st Round (16th Overall): RW Lawne Paton

Paton played four years for the IceDogs, and while he stuggled a bit at the start of his career, by his final year he was playing top minutes, and both scoring, and playing a rugged style of game, and even being in the occasional fight. He just finished his first professional season, split between Lake Erie and Rockford of the AHL!

Milne had a solid rookie campaign for the IceDogs, before struggling in his second year, after completing his sophomore campaign he was shipped off to the Barrie Colts as part of the deal that brought winger Hunter Smith to the IceDogs for a season, a trade that worked out well for both parties, as Milne developed into a solid defenseman in Barrie, before being traded to Owen Sound, where he played top minutes in his overage year, as one of their top defensemen!

Pokulok never played for Barrie however, being released shortly after the deal was completed, he played a season with the North Bay Trappers, before signing with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League to play his final two years of junior eligibility, where he developed into a solid if unspectacular player.

Hill was thrown in the deep end, and expected to produce from the start, and struggled somewhat in his first season with the IceDogs, however he soon found his legs in his second campaign, and became the face of the franchise of some very strong IceDogs teams, developing to the point that in his final year he was given very strong consideration for the OHL Star Player Award, coming second in the voting!

Tanguay was a bit of an enigma in four years with the IceDogs, while he could be counted on to score, his effort just wasn't there in many games, causing him to become not exactly a favorite with the coaches. However, his good hands with the puck were enough to get him drafted, and he just played his first professional season with the AHL's Adirondack Phantoms, and even managed not to embarass himself too badly in a two game call-up to the Flyers!

Dube spent two season playing as an extra defenseman in Niagara, before being shipped to the Ottawa 67's (along with winger Ivan Benyuk (who was soon released by Ottawa), and a 6th Round Pick), for goaltender Gennadi Kotin (who was almost immediately traded to Guelph), and Leiland Lirette, a deal that worked out great for Niagara, as Lirette was a top scorer on the IceDogs his whole time there. He played an unspectacular season and a bit for Ottawa, before being dealt to Brampton, he was released by Brampton before his overage campaign, and played his first pro season this year with the ECHL's Orlando Solar Bears!

1st Round (47th Overall): LW/RW Radko Tvrznik

A sensation as soon as he stepped off the plane from the Czech Republic, Tvrznik played three highly productive seasons with the IceDogs, just missing the 100 goal mark for his career. He has now played two productive seasons in the AHL, and may one day make the NHL ranks if his progression continues!
