His deal with Washington must have fell apart. Supposedly he had an agreement for a deal with Washington but they were waiting to announce it until other moves were made. I think they were looking to clear some room. So they must have decided to keep the other player or Belanger got frustrated with waiting for Washington.

You just have to wonder about this whole Belanger situation.
If he indeed had a verbal agreement with the Capitals to come back this year, this is just an obscene gesture from the Caps management. I mean, if the tables were turned and Belanger had bailed out on their agreement instead of waiting for the contract, the Caps would be screaming bloody murder.
This might be a bit of a blow for the Caps image though.
It is. The Caps clearly got a "verbal" deal with him. It seems the Caps didn't been able to clear space for him but still they let him down. They found a school for his childs and a house for him and then boum nothing, that's sucks bad.
This isn't an NHL thing but I'm going to put it here anyhow...
I was just reading an article that said that the Hartford Wolfpack of the AHL would be changing their name in February (during the season? odd!). Most people expected them to rename themselves as the Hartford Whalers but I'm guessing something got hung up with the naming rights. They'll be called the Connecticut Whales or Connecticut Whale. I forget which. Anyhow, the rationale (supposedly) is that most of the old Hartford Whalers fans referred to them as "The Whale", so this is taking from that. Like I said, I think they couldn't secure the naming rights.
