The Toronto Throws 30+ mil at McCabe Thread (renamed)
Might's as well combo these two quick mentions:
Toronto has signed Brian McCabe to a 30 million plus dollar five year contract and in Phoenix Wayne has announced he's signed a five year extension to continue his coaching career with the Yotes.

I make no comments on McCabe's worth since he was an absolute nightmare when in Chicago and the only thing the team really lost was having to kill two or three stoopid penalties a game. The living soul sucking nightmare that was Alex 'The Walking Wound' Karpovtsev was in retrospect not a positive addition either but that's another recorded rant for another time...
But 5.5+ for 5 in "Today's NHLâ„¢" is a giant commitment for any player so, yeah I think it has a decent probability of backfiring on them

I think the reason McCabe got a moster deal was due to the fact that his surprisingly good performance this season and the fact that Toronto is desperate. I'm sure McCabe's agent told the Leafs they want a very good deal or else they wont sign with the leafs. JF went ahead and complete the deal because they need a #1 dman like McCabe and he's ability, but I'm sure JF along with many leafs fans is not thrill about this deal. I guess it sucks to be a leafs fans now a days eh?
Then again...I'm still waiting for the fate of my beloved Canucks.

McCabe is NOT a number one D-man. He's good for one thing, sitting at the point and waiting for someone to puit the puck on his stick so he can shoot it. It didn't even work past the middle of the season, every team was expecting it.thecoolstuff wrote:I think the reason McCabe got a moster deal was due to the fact that his surprisingly good performance this season and the fact that Toronto is desperate. Toronto is far from desperate, they have about 5-6 guys in they're early 20's that are all ready to step up to the big league in the next year or two.

Say what you want, but JF aint stupid. If you think his ability and his "#1 dman" statis in Toronto has nothing to do with the deal, then what is it that made JF signed a deal like that? Keep in mind McCabe IS the #1 ranked dman before he got injured in yahoo fantasy hockey. And what about Gretzky calling him to be on team Canada?E5150_ca wrote:McCabe is NOT a number one D-man. p.s. I'd call my team desperate if all I can count on is a bunch of guys in their early 20's to "step up".

Kaberle is the Leafs' number one D-Man, not McCabe.thecoolstuff wrote:Say what you want, but JF aint stupid. Belfours and Domi's contract disagree with you. So does Nieundikes season in Flordia.thecoolstuff wrote: Say what you want, but JF aint stupid.
McCabe is not a #1 d-man. I said that already, stop bringing it up. McCabe is ranked #1 in fantasy hockey because he can sit at the point and wait for the puck to come to him. Also, it really doesn't say much for anyone involved if you bring up the fact he played for Team Canada this year.thecoolstuff wrote: If you think his ability and his "#1 dman" statis in Toronto has nothing to do with the deal, then what is it that made JF signed a deal like that? I wouldn't. I'd call it building for the future.thecoolstuff wrote:p.s. I'd call my team desperate if all I can count on is a bunch of guys in their early 20's to "step up".

McCabe is the #1 dman in Toronto in my eye and in JF's eye, if you dont see it that way maybe you can go apply for the GM job in Toronto, cuz sounds like you think you're a lot more capable than JF. I've never ever see kaberle as the #1 dman in Toronto. If he IS then why would they sign Leetch and then McCabe, both player was paid more than Kaberle (this time more than double). Sure Kab can pass the puck and move it around, but can he score like McCabe? can he hit like McCabe? Does he has the leadership like McCabe? I think not. Yes, all McCabe do is shoot the puck from the point. Who cant do that? It turns out that most of the dman in the NHL right now CANT do it like McCabe, because in the end McCabe not just shoot the puck he scores. And we could also say all Kaberle did to get his point was by passing to McCabe.
The fact that he play for team Canada has everything to do with the contract.
Hello? Mr. Ferguson, I'm on team Canada, remember? You think 5M/yr will make me happy? Give me another 1M!
You might not think Toronto is desperate, but obviously you're not a Leafs fan. I dont see any sign that JF is going into a rebuilding process. Maybe desperate sounds a little extreme, but the way this team performed with the talents they got, they are so NOT desperate? They are the centre of the hockey universe for crying out loud. So much expectations for this team from the staff, the media, and most importantly the fans. McCabe's crazy new contract proves they are desperate. And you really think the fans would be so patient and wait for a few years for those young guys to step up?
I agree, McCabe will turn out to be one heck of an overpaid player but maybe we should all stop trashing the leafs and everything they do for a change.

Can McCabe play defense like Kaberle? I'd take Kaberle at 5 mil over McCabe at 5 mil any day of the week.thecoolstuff wrote:Sure Kab can pass the puck and move it around, but can he score like McCabe? can he hit like McCabe? Does he has the leadership like McCabe? I think not.
Does McCabe really hit that much?

In the end it all comes down to that. I would much rather have my DEFENSEMEN be able to actually play DEFENSE. Which is pretty clear McCabe cannot.Systemfel wrote: Can McCabe play defense like Kaberle?
You also missed my early point, playing on Team Canada this year was no great honour. They lost to Switerzland of all teams! (no disrespect to the country of Switerland intended, but you guys aren't exactly known for your hockey teams.)

Wait a minute... are we actually trying to talk logic/sense with a Leafs fan about valuation of one of their players? If so disregard everything I've said and replace it with "Nevermind, you're right, he's awesome so is Nik Antropov; just you wait and see. The also both hit like freakin' freight trains since they are so big and tough."
Renamed the thread for obvious reasons btw

It seems that the McCabe deal has NOT yet go through after all. The offer has been made but McCabe is still not signing for some reasons. Rumor has it McCabe's wife wants him to go back to NYI, the place she grew up.
But I say maybe McCabe's just feeling guilty about signing the obviously overpaid contract...

McCabe is an overrated piece of trash...
But to give him credit, he has drastically cut down on his numerous bonehead defensive plays. He used to be good for two or three crucial giveaways a game.
I liken him to Rio Ferdinand, great physical talent, but his head often seems elsewhere. He has all the tools but has not put them all together yet. At this point he never will.
IMO, Kaberle is a much better dman...its almost insulting to Tomas to be compared to McCabe.
And yes, Ferguson is an idiot.
And yes, I am a Leafs fan.
