can i ever make the NHL?

Post by robotco »

i started an EHM game years ago with the idea of starting with the first job available and working my way up to the NHL. i've gone from europe to the echl to the ahl, but i can never seem to make the NHL jump. i'm currently in 2014 game time and despite applying for every NHL job that comes available, i never get in. is it even possible?

If you're not american/canadian (or hold a 2nd passport) it's close to impossible

Hm if you have a canadian nationality, then you should be able to get a spot in the NHL. Be patient and try to win more. Also, I think that managing a national team may be good to raise your reputation.

I managed it with English nationality! I went from the English league - Austrian - Russian - ECHL (I got stuck at the Reading Royals for a few seasons) then made a move to the Canadian Jrs then after 2 years I made the NHL!

keep it up and you'll get there.

I concur with Alessandro that managing a national team (especially Team Canada) would really help to improve rep quickly. I did that, and went from not being on any team's radar, to getting multiple NHL offers.

I've managed it as a Swedish manager. Won or contested for the championship in Sweden for a number of years in a row and eventually I started to get offered NHL gigs. Actually turned down a few initially since I only wanted to coach SEL in that specific game, but then my fave team Dallas fired their manager and I applied and got the job within a week. So yeah, it's definitely possible.

leads to another question - how can i coach a national team? i apply for every one and never land those either.

It can take a bit of time to get a National Team job. I had been a Mem Cup runner-up, and didn't get the Canada U-20 job. Just be patient, and build a winning club and the opportunities will come. It's very possible to make the NHL.

I did the same, started as an Austrian GM, took me 10 years to make it to the NHL. I've also been the GM for team Canada for 2 World Championships now and have become the best GM in North America, but I just finished the 2031/2032 season, so it took a while...

EDIT: Also, I started by taking over a Slovakian team and winning 3 championships in a row and finishing 2nd in the European league (forgot what it's called now). Then coached the Austrian and some U20 national teams. Before that, I tried to make my way into the NHL by running an AHL team, but even after I made it to the finals, no NHL team gave me a job. But after winning the Slovakian league 3 times, the Red Wings hired me and I won I believe 6 cups in 9 seasons or so, finding many artificial limitations they built into the game to prevent you from winning every year, etc...

So yeah, I'd say keep playing, learn the game's mechanics, be successful and sooner or later you'll get any job you apply for.
