Coaches suggest giving current player a staff spot, how to?

Post by neuralhandshake »

My Red Wings coaches suggest that I offer Dan Cleary a staff position out of loyalty to the organization and that he's reached his maximum potential and no longer beneficial to the team as a player.

How do I go about making him staff? I've tried buying him out, waiving him, sending him to Grand Rapids, everything, but I just can't figure it out.

Even if I have to wait until he retires, I'm still not sure how to do it. I've read that some players just disappear after they retire. I want to 'reward' Cleary with my play style.

Thanks in advance!

Offer him a contract as player / coach, or only staff, depending on how you want to use him.

That option isn't available when I offer him a new contract, I don't think... Unless it is somehow? Or do I have to wait for his current one to expire?

With Henrik Lundqvist, who's 40 in my game, I get this when I offer a new contract:

Perhaps your player does not himself want to be a coach / staff, or not old enough, or... not sure. :-k

Thanks for the screenshot! REALLY helpful :D

It's likely Cleary is just being stubborn. But I may be projecting my thoughts on Real Cleary onto Sim Cleary.

So Cleary has now retired after I offered him a contract as an assistant coach (Datsyuk sneakily retired on me after declining to negotiate a coach contract--super bummed, would rather have him instead of Danny C). Cleary signed and shows up as an assistant coach on my personnel list, but has no number listed for salary amount/when his contract expires. Additionally, when I click his name, the attributes are empty. The screen is pretty much empty on that side entirely--no box where it would even be.

Do these attributes magically pop up, or is Cleary glitched? It's currently preseason, but he doesn't show up as a coach on practices or anything either. He did offer advice during the draft, but uhhh, it wasn't very good advice so I ignored him.

I can't fire him, which makes matters worse. I assume I can somehow delete him using the game editor, though. I'm afraid to hire another retiring player again in case the same thing happens. Is there any way to grab Datsyuk back once he's retired and eliminated from the database? I assume not. Wasn't expecting him to retire as a a free agent so unexpectedly.

If he wanted to continue in the sport he would have remained in the database as a non-player. You can try and search for him, if you cannot find him, then you know he had enough of ice hockey.
