August 2005

It was around 6am, The birds was singing, The sun was out and overall it was a great sunny morning. I woke up at around 5.30 reflecting on the night before. I went to see a game between Madison Ice and Iowa. This would be my first game in america after moving here last month from the UK. The game ended 4-0 to Iowa. On my way home I thought to myself if only they did this and did that. Then I thought, How about I apply for the job and try out my trade in the Hockey world?? I know enough about hockey after all after being a follower for some good years now.

So I sat down grabbed a cup of coffee and started out writing my CV and looking for possible candidates who might give me an oppertunity, After finding some possible candidates I sent them away hoping for a responce. I got rejection letters a few weeks later from Iowa, Michigan, Kansas and Sweetwater. The only one I was waiting for now was Madison. With weeks passing by I thought surely it was going to be another rejection letter, but I was wrong.

August 22th

I got a phone call asking if I was still intrested in going for an interview, I jumped at the chance but also a little suprised as I expected a rejection letter with not hearing from them in a while. They asked me if it would be possible to go for an interview on the 26th which I gladly accepted. Not wanting to get my hopes up too high incase I was rejected. So I decided to keep calm untill Friday came.

August 26th

So the time finally came, My first job interview. I got up, got dressed has a black coffee, got my stuff together and set off. I walked in and was sitting outside waiting to be called in. I got speaking to a few other candidates who was also applying for the job but I was the last one to be interviewed.

Suddenly this big tall fella came and stood right in the Doorway and called my name. So I got up and thought you can do it now, don't let yourself down. I got insdie the office and this guy had two secrity guards stood either side of the room. It was a bit off putting at first but then I never thought about it. He said to me "please take a seat" So I sat down full of nerves. He then introduced him self as Dave Parker, The president of Madison Ice. So I then introduced my self and before we got talking he asked for some coffee. While we was waiting I was sitting in my chair looking around. He was sitting right in front of me, He was sat in his leather chair. Behind him was the Team Photo and a Trophy cabinet. The room was nice and cosy which made the interview feel alot better. After observing the room for a little our Coffees came. He asked how I liked my coffee then we got to Business.

Dave Parker -- "so then Mark, why have you decided to apply for the job"??
Mark Tulley -- "Well I know quite alot about ice hockey and I came to see Madison Ice play the other week against Iowa. You lost 4-0. So on my way home I was thinking I could do better than this, As I thought the Tacticts was totally wrong."
DP - "I have been looking through you'r CV and I think it looks good. My only concern though is the lack of experience"
MT - "I know I don't have much expreience in actually managing a Hockey team but I feel I have what it takes to turn the Team into a title challenging team. I want to do very well for the Team I manage and I am hoping it is Madison Ice"
DP - "It is nice to see somene with so much ambition. What would you say you'r Long term goals would be??"
MT - Well every GM wants to Manage in the NHL, but I would like to build up my experience by taking over Madison Ice and taking them as far as I can before I would even think about moving on.

Time went by and so far things looked promising. Then a knock came at the door. It was his Secratary Mellissa Tinton.

Mellissa Tinton - "Excuse me Dave but you have an urgent phone call on line 2"
DP - Ok thank you Mellissa could you ask them to hold for 5 minutes please.
DP - Well thank you for attending today Mark. I am very impressed with you I must say, I will get back to you as soon as I made a decision.
MT - Thank you, I appreciate you seeing me today.
I then got up we shook hands and was seen out by Mellisa.

August 29th

I recieved a phone call from Mellissa Tinton saying that Dave Parker wanted to chat with me on the phone. I was a little worried as I didn't know what to expect, wether it be a rejection call or if I had the job. I accepted and got put through to Dave.

MT - "Hello, Mark here you wanted to speak to me??"
DP - "Yes I did. After looking through all of my possible candidates who applied for the job you was the one who stood out the most" (My heat was now starting to pump fater) " So I would like to congratulate you on getting the job"
MT - "Yes I would love to take the job. I would like to thank you for giving me this oppertunity in becoming a GM. When do I start?"
DP - You will start on the 1st of September but would like you to come in and sign some Paper work first This afternoon."
MT - Ok, I will be there this afternoon"

After the phone call had finished I got ready and set of down to the Rink. I had a look over the contract and was happy to sign on the Dotted Line.

September 1st 2006

I arrived in my office early and had a look around. I then Logged onto my computer and had 3 emails. The first one was just saying that I had been appointed as General manager. then the board had viven me there expectations. They only expect me to improve the Rooster this year which took me by suprise a little as I thought they would want me to win the Title or at least push for it. My final email was About my opening fixtures. I would start the Season With home games against Miami Valley, Iowa and Kansas. These would take place on 21st, 22nd and 23rd of october, this would give me plenty of time to get to know my Rooster.

Will update more soon. As I have not sorted out my Rooster yet or done anything else.

September 1st Continued

So I sat down and got to work. My first job as GM was to sign new staff/players. So far I only have myself and the President on board.

I went on the lookout for some good staff who I feel would make the best out of my team. I put offers in for Jeff Gorton to be my assistant GM. He said he had no intentions in coming to me but I thought I would try anyway. I also approaced Frank Provenzano as an assistant GM. He is currently unemployed and is expecting £36,000 untill may 2008.

Next I went onto a Head coach. After searching around I decided to offer Keven Constantine who has no intresting in signing for me and Davis Payne. Davis also has no intention in signing for me. I also approached Henry McGillis. Henry expected £14,000 untill May 2007. So I decided I would offer him a contract untill 2008 worth £21,000.

I then went onto looking for some assistant coaches. I decided I would only aproach Noah Smith. He was expecting a wage of £18,000 untill may 2007. So I offerd him a contract untill 2008 worth £27,000. Both are unemployed.

Scouts was on my next agenda. I wanted to fill 4 scouting positions. The first person I approached was Archie Henderson. He wanted a contract worth 2007 worth £12,000. I offerd him untill 2008 worth £21,000 hoping he would want to join. I also offerd contracts to Gilles Boe, Joe Byfuglien and Dene Toporowski.

Last was Physio. I only wanted two Physios so I offerd contracts to Scott Unice and Aurthur Ting.

I decided I would hold out on buying any players untill I had a look at my Rooster and seen what needs work on.

*NOTE* After looking at my Rooster I say I needed a goal keeper as I only had one contracted to me. So I went on the search for a Goalie.

I went searching for a few goaltenders and approached Josh Blackburn.

September 4th

In the office today was some good news. Joe Byfuglien (Scout) Noah Smith (Ast Coach) and Henry McGillis (Head Coach) have all agreed terms and can start straight away.

Later that evening I got some more good news and some bad news. Dene Toporowski, Gillis Boe (Scout) Scott Unice, Aurthur Ting (Physio) All agreed contracts.

While Jeff Gorton (Assitant GM) rejected my contract. I decided I would not persue my offer.

I then headed down to have a look at my Rooster. After reading over reports, and going from my own personal Judgment I picked my team.

As I stood there in front of my team waiting for them to setle down. I stated that if people have not been picked don't worry. There is plenty of time this season for everyone to get a game. I have picked the players I feel deserve there place. After a few "yes boss" I got to work by calling out my Rooster.

Players Dressed

Jim Clark, Erik Swick (G) Kyle Grant, Joe Schltultz, Joel Green, Chris McLaughlin, Cody Laforge, Peter Lund, Nathan Stevenson, Todd Fournier, Kurt Poirier, Graham Cunningham, Serge McTavish, Brandon Talbot, Ryan Keller, Jake Sanders and Tyler Fischer.

Line 1 --- McLaughlin -- Laforge -- Grant -- Schultz -- Green
Line 2 --- Sanders -- Fournier -- Lund -- Stevenson -- Keller
Line 3 --- Poirier -- Cunningham -- Fischer -- McTavish -- Talbot.
Line 4 has been left blank.

Starting Goalie Clark -- Backup Swick.

5 on 4 powerplays

1 -- Poirier -- Fournier -- Grant -- Schultz -- Green
2 -- McLaughlin -- Sanders -- Lund -- Stevenson -- Keller

5 on 3 powerplays

1 -- Poirier -- Fournier -- Grant -- Schultz -- Green
2 -- McLaughlin -- Sanders -- Lund -- Stevenson -- Keller

4 on 5 Penalty Kill

1 -- McLaughlin -- Laforge -- McTavish -- Fischer
2 -- Sanders -- Cunningham -- Grant -- Fournier

3 on 5 Penalty Kill

1 -- McLaughlin -- Laforge -- Fischer
2 -- Sanders -- Cunningham -- McTavish

Even Strengh Lines

1 -- McLaughlin -- Laforge -- Schultz -- Green
2 -- Sanders -- Fournier -- Stevenson -- Keller

*I hope you are enjoying my story so far. Please feel free to leave feedback* :)

Cheers guys.

This is only my second attempt at one. My first one I did on SI games but the savegame got lost.

I willl update this as much as I can in my spare time. Will be a bit hard right at the min as I have a few assignments to hand in before we break up in two weeks. If it doesn't look like I will get them finished in college then I will have to do some at home.

Will update when I can though.

September 5th

I woke up this morning and headed down to the office. When I got there I checked my mail. My mail was good news this morning. When I looked at my roster when I was picking ym team I saw I needed a goalie as I only had one. So I went on the search for one. I appreached Josh Blackburn who agreed terms with me this morning. So I did not hesitate to sign him. He came as a free agent. I had a chat with him to welcome him to the team and made sure he feeled at home.

Tuesday 6th September

I turned the TV on this morning to see what was going on in todays news.

Reorter: Hello and welcome to the one and only show for the All American 4 League. Todaw we have two top stories. The first one is the capture of Josh Blackburn by Madison Ice. They signed him fomr a free agent and this is what Mark had to say.

Mark: Josh Blackburn is a great player and I can't wait to see him down on the ice. Alott of fans have come upto me and and said that I have got a great player so it si nice to know I am also keeping the fans happy.

Reporter: Elsewhere Kansas have signed Defensemen Claude Morin from STG as a free agent. he has signed a contract worth £20k untill May 30th 2006. This will surly spice things up for the start of the season. Thank you for watching. We will see you again shortley. Lets hope we get sme great action this season.

I then turned the Tv off and went bout arraging some Exibition games. I invited Youngstown Steelhounds for a home game. I also chose to go away at Alaska Aces. Both teams accepted. My first game will be on the 14th of September at home to Youngstown then away at Alaska on 28th September.

Tuesday 13th September 2005

I decided I would get up earlier than normall today. When I woke up the first thing at the back of my mind was the big day tomorrow for me. As tomorrow would be my first game in charge of Madison Ice.

I set of down to work. When I got there I had a message on my desk from Dave Parker saying that he wanted to see me. I gatherd it would be something to do with tomorrow seen as this would be my first game in charge.

*Knocks on the door*

Dave Parker - "Nice to see you this morning Mark, thank you for coming down to see me".
Mark Tulley - "No Problem, Is everything ok?"
DP - *laughing* "Yes everything is fine no need to worry I would just like to wish you luck in you'r first game in charge tomorrow. I am sure you will do everyone proud by winning your first game in charge for us"
MT - "Thank you. I am really looking forward to tomorrow. I thought I had better come into the office earlier this morning so that I can sort some things out before tomorrows game. I will also be holding a meeting this afternoon aswell. To try motivate the players"
DP - "That is always good to hear. Well I had best let you get to work then and good luck tomorrow."
MT - "Thank you. Bye."
*I close the door behind me and set off back to my office.

PM.
Down at the Rink.

MT - "Thanks for coming today. I would just like to wish you all luck for tomorrow. I am hoping we can win this one which I am sure you will be thinking the same. If is always good to get wins in Exibition games so we can work towards getting fit and ready for the new season."
*After going over the tactics with them they all get up and leave*
