Ryan Smith Beats Gretzky's Scoring Record

Post by Minstrel »

As odd as that may sound it's true; it happened in the wild finish of the Edmonton/San Jose game.

The Oilers scored four goals in the third period including Ryan Smith's hattrick. He scored the hattrick all in a 2:01 span in the third, beating out the previous record for fastest hattrick by an Edmonton player. That was a record formerly held by Wayne.

Two minutes?! That's insane! :-o

They must have won both faceoffs in between and then skated up and scored straightaway. I must find the highlights for that game :-k

I believe the first was on a 5 on 3 and then the next was on a 5 on 4. The third was then even strength I think... it was one of those that the second one was so fast after the first that the color guy was about half way through recapping the play that set up the goal and the announcer yells Smyth scores again!! :-p I just happened to catch the end of it on the NHL radio feature of NHL.com since my cable box got blown out in a storm I didn't have access to my Center Ice

Of course it's no Bill Mosienko three goals in 21 seconds... but still pretty wild and not often Gretzky's records get broken.

Smyth and Cheechoo with natural hat tricks in the same game last nite. Plus Gionta's natural for NJ. Must have been quite the nite last nite. Too bad Kipper did not let in 8 or 9. :-)
