Fortunate Son : A prospect story

Post by cecede123 »

Monday, August 14th 2017
Finally, summer is coming to an end! I can not wait to see if my hard work has paid off! By the way, my name is Cédric Dumas, born on April 1, 2000 (yes, I know, what an April Fool!) In Baie-Comeau, Quebec, and I've been dreaming for a long time of the dream of being a football player. professional hockey. I must say that things looked promising, since my years in the amateur ranks of Quebec went very well. But, this darn motorcycle accident of 2014 will have really made everything crash. A tibia fracture, ending all chances of being picked in the QJMHL ... My doctor had told me that I could not play hockey as before. But ... I think it's words motivated me. Since my rehabilitation, I train very hard to attract the eye of a team of the league junior of Quebec, where indeed in Canada actually! My wound scared the scouts, I was never drafted in the Q. But it has not prevented trying to show my abilities every day! And thanks to this big DEK hockey tournament that was held in Quebec earlier this summer, where several scouts were present, and where my team won the first place, I think I have a good chance of finding a place in the QJMHL, despite my past injury.

I have never been so close to my goal. Indeed, the phone has not stopped ringing today. Sitting in the kitchen of my childhood home, in Baie-Comeau, I am sorting with my father the offers that have gone so far:
-Rouyn Noranda Huskies
-Gatineau Olympiques
-Victoriaville Tigers
Halifax Mooseheads
-Québec Ramparts
-Rimouski Océanic
-Saint John Sea Dogs
-Blainville Armada
and even a call from the USNDT!

Of course, I am disappointed that my childhood team, the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, did not even let me drop a phone call. But hey, I'm already lucky to have so many offers from Q teams! My wish is to stay here in the Quebec Junior League. I will weigh the pros and cons of the different offers and make a decision by next week!

Sunday, August 20th 2017
Here I come out of a very nice restaurant, accompanied by my father, who acts as an agent for me, and also Trevor Georgie. What to say about the meal! Although the North Shore of Quebec has a reputation for its seafood, I did not remember having eaten so much in a long time! While walking with the two men who accompany me, we reach the Harbor Station Arena, which will be my home for the next season. After thinking well all week, I flew yesterday, Saturday, to sign my contract here in Saint John, New Brunswick. This decision is based not only geographically, because I will not be so far from my native Baie-Comeau, but I will also have the chance to play alongside Joe Veleno, an excellent prospect, labeled first round for a very long time ! My father opened my eyes to this aspect: several recruiters will be here, in Saint-John, to spy on Joe. This will be a good opportunity for me to show what I can do to these recruiters. Who knows ? Maybe I'll play luck again?

Monday, August 21th 2017
We had our first team meeting today. In addition to Joe Veleno, we can count on Ostap Safin, a fourth-round pick by Edmonton last year, and Cédric Paré, a sixth-round pick from Boston. For my part, I play on the left wing, and I have seven other players who can also play this position. I can not wait to see where I will land in the tactics!
With Saint John, I will wear # 34. Oh I forgot, I measure 5'10 and I weigh 189lbs. Before my motorcycle accident, I was standing over in the vicinity of 205 lbs, but I am now more slim!

Training Camp !

Tuesday, August 22nd 2017
Today is our first pre-season game! After three scrimmage with the team, I believe we are ready for this challenge! We will play against Gatineau!
Saint John 5-4 Gatineau
That's it, my first match is over! Everything went well. I did not manage to register for the score, but I still finished the meeting with a neutral + -. I played on the first line with Max-Antoine Melançon, 16, and Louis Latta, the 19-year-old German. I was also on the 2nd unit of powerplay, with Joe Veleno.

Wesnesday, August 23rd 2017
The game tonight against Victoriaville did not unfold as I wanted. I finished the match with a -1, without registering on the score sheet. I was on the same trio as yesterday ...
Saint John 4-3 Victoriaville

Friday, August 25th 2017
The training camp for the Sea Dogs ends today. Until now, I do not like my performance. I participated in three scrimmages, and I accumulated only one point, a vulgar assist, with a 2 minute penalty. Tonight we are facing our rivals in Halifax.
Halifax 5-1 Saint John
Once again, it's a game to forget for me. I spent 2 minutes in the box, and I was on the ice for a goal of the opposing team, without having blacked the score sheet. This time, I was on the 2nd line, with Anthony Boucher and Kevin Gursoy.

Sunday, August 27th 2017
We return on the road to Quebec, where we face the Remparts.
Saint John 0-4 Québec
Another poor showing for me, while I do not succeed in getting involved offensively. It starts to show on my playing time: I was only on the ice for 12 minutes in this match, with no playing time on the PP. Only four games remains to the pre-season schedule !

Tuesday, August 29th 2017
I'm back with the first line, while tonight we're facing the Rimouski Océanic!
Saint John 1-5 Rimouski
Another minus 1 game, I'm starting to think that I do not have what it takes to take the step !

Wesnesday, August 30th 2017
Saint John 2-4 Victoriaville
I finish it with a -1, and a 2 minute penalty.

Friday, September 1st 2017
Saint John 2-1 Blainville
I finally manage to make a point ! I assisted a powerplay goal, the same goal which gave us the win ! I'll try to keep the work for the last pre-season game !

Sunday, September 3rd 2017
Saint John 4-3 Drummondville
Another assist in this game ! This means that I finish my camp with 0-2-2, -5, 10 PIM, 21 SOG and an ATOI of 18 minutes, mainly between the 1st and the 2nd line.

Each player leaves coach Todd Krygier's office in turn. He wanted to meet us to explain our role in his team. With my poor performance at the training camp, I do not expect much. As I expected, it is the 4th trio who is waiting for me this season. However, I am determined to go up the ladder. The coach explains to me that the 4th center chair is not cast in concrete yet, and therefore, my line partners will change often. A lot of work is waiting for me.

SEPTEMBER 2017

Saint John Sea Dogs : 3-3-0-0
Cédric Dumas : 0-2-2, 2PIM, 7.17

Wednesday, October 4th 2017

My father dropped me a call today that I did not expect! He told me to look on the NHL website because the CSB list was out. To my surprise, I'm there! Indeed, my name is ranked 147th on this list! Joe Veleno, my teammate, is ranked as sixth. We are the only two on my team's list. The top three are Dahlin, Svechnikov and Zadina, whom we face sometimes against Halifax.

November 2017

Friday, December 1st 2017

I leave my gleaming Tercel, sun leaden. November is drawing to a close. For my part, it's always routine. Practice, eat, play, sleep, repeat. I must say that the hardest thing to date is one, not being close to home first, but also long trips from the Maritimes to the confines of Quebec. Until now, we have not yet visited the Baie-Comeau Drakkar at home. That is, I have not seen my mother since I left home this summer. Our team is doing relatively well. We are 3rd in the Atlantic Division of the Q, with 27 games played. On a personal level, it's pretty hard for me. I try to play my role of good in both directions of the rink, but say that it is reflected in my statistics. I have three goals and six assists, with a + - 0 and 8 minute penalty. Recruiters are often at our parties, it's certainly that adds a dose of stress. In the locker room, players are talking a lot about the U20 Junior Team Canada camp. But I do not have expectations. Things will happen as they should. Let it be. I still play on the 4th trio of the team, with rare appearances on the 3rd trio. However, there is some room left on the left wing, while our GM has traded left wing Matthew Green to Drummondville in exchange of a dman.

Saint John Sea Dogs : 27GP, 18-9-0-0, 5th overall
Cédric Dumas : 27 GP : 3-6-9, 0, 8PIM, 16SOG, 6.96 AVR, 10.09ATOI

January 2018

January 9th 2018
For a rare occasion, I was not in bed early last night. Indeed, it was the final of the world championship. We met at the restaurant, the whole team, to follow our teammates and the rest of the Canadian team. It must be said that their tournament went very well! Finally, it was our team that won the gold medal, with a win of 5-2 against Russia. Joe had 11 points and Daniel 6 points.

January 11th 2018

Not long after, my cell rang. It was my father, who gave me the new data from the CSB. I'm in 96th position, 50 places difference with the pre-season list. Joe finds himself in 6th place.

I'm now a steady LW for the 3rd line.

Saint John Sea Dogs : 27-21-1-1
Cédric Dumas : 50GP, 7-12-19, -8, 14PIM, 49SOG, 6.92AVR, 12:19ATOI

February 2018
What a pity the NHL players could not get to the Olympics! I followed him out of the corner of my eye, it was the USA who finished 1st, followed by the Russians and Canada, with the Bronze medal.

Saint John Sea Dogs : 34-24-1-2
Cédric Dumas : 61GP, 10-13-23, -12, 21PIM, 58SOG, 6.90AVR, 12.19ATOI

March 2018

We are in the playoffs! We finished second in the Atlantic Division, and we will face our Moncton rivals in the first round!
For my part, I had an average season. I finished the year with 12 goals, 15 assists for 27 points, a bloody differential of -12 and 21 PIM.
I finished the season on the third squad, and my coach confirmed me that I'll finish the season there.

Saint John Sea Dogs : 68GP, 40-25-1-2
Cédric Dumas : 68GP, 12-15-27, -12, 21PIM, 73SOG, 6.94AVR, 12:15 ATOI

ROUND 1 against Moncton
GAME 1
Saint John 5-3 Moncton (Dumas : 2 assists, 3rd star)
GAME 2
Saint John 9-7 Moncton (Dumas : 2 assists)
GAME 3
Moncton 2-4 Saint John (Dumas : 0-0-0)
GAME 4
Moncton 1-4 Saint John (Dumas : 0-0-0)

April 4th 2018
The final rankings for the upcoming draft have been released. I stand at the 88th rank, and Joe Veleno is at the 5th spot, up one.

ROUND 2 against CHICOUTIMI
GAME 1
Saint John 0-5 Chicoutimi (Dumas : 0-0-0)
GAME 2
Saint John 5-1 Chicoutimi (Dumas : 0-0-0)
GAME 3
Chicoutimi 4-5 Saint John (OT) (Dumas : 0-1-1)
GAME 4
Chicoutimi 5-2 Saint John (Dumas : 0-0-0)

GAME 5
Saint John 1-2 Chicoutimi (Dumas : 0-0-0)
GAME 6
Chicoutimi 1-4 Saint John (Dumas : 0-0-0)
GAME 7
Saint John 2-4 Chicoutimi (Dumas : 0-0-0)

Final stats
Cédric Dumas : 11GP 0-5-5, -4, 4PIM, 17SOG, AVR7.00, 12:15 ATOI

Our qualifying round is not over as I would have liked. A heartbreaking defeat against the Chicoutimi Saguenéens, a team that can really aspire to the President's Cup. The first round was a good one, with our Moncton sweep. But we did not keep the momentum for the 2nd round. Now it's time to empty our lockers for the summer. I will be watching the NHL playoffs and the course of my favorite team, the Montreal Canadiens. In June, I will fly to Texas, where the draft 2018 takes place. I will be with Joe, and I can not wait to see which team I will be selected!

OFFSEASON

Stanley Cup : Washington Capitals
Memorial Cup : Sault Ste.Marie
World Champ : USA

Vegas wins the Draft Lottery (Rigged !!!! :-p )

June 23rd 2018
I'm sitting in the dais at the Dallas Stars arena. This is the first time I venture so far in the United States. By my side, my family, of course, but also my friends Joe Veleno (who is a top prospect who will probably be in the top 10) and also Daniel Hardie, who despite his absence on the CSB list, had discussions with teams and could be drafted. Despite their good season, it was the Golden Knights who won the draft lottery, and will choose first. He will be the lucky ones to probably choose Rasmus Dahlin. The future of their defense will be secure, especially as George McPhee acquired Timothy Liljegren of Toronto earlier this year. My favorite team, the Canadiens, have had several exchanges during the season to earn top honors. They acquired Mike Green, Radim Vrbata and Valteri Filppula, in addition to Alex Debrincat. However, they were eliminated against Caps in the conference final. But the biggest name to change hands this year is certainly Alexander Radulov, who won the cup with Washington!
But hey, I move away a little. A concert of boos filled the arena, while Gary Bettman greets the crowd on the stage ...

George McPhee approaches the stage and makes his selection
The Golden Knights selects from Sweden, Rasmus Dahlin!

Then follow the boss of the Islanders, Coyotes and Panthers, drafting respectively Andrei Svechnikov, Filip Zadina and Vitali Kravtsov.

After, Ron Hextall climbs the stage and get to the microphone :
Philadelphia Flyers are proud to select, from Saint John Sea Dogs of the Q, Joseph Veleno!
I'm pretty happy for my boy Joe ! He'll get to play with Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek, one day !

Not long after, Gary Bettman gets on the stage to announce a trade : Carolina trades right of Julien Gauthier to Edmonton, in exchange of Kailer Yamamoto and William Laggesson !
So, my teammate here in Saint John is traded at the draft ! Insane !

The night finishes with the pick of the Dallas Stars, drafting Kyle Topping with the 31st pick.

June 24th 2018
Saturday's draft day is way less flamboyant than the first Friday night, reserved for the first round. So it is in a much more cozy atmosphere that I took place in the American Airlines Arena, waiting to hear my name at the microphone. At 65, it's the Philadelphia Flyers. My heart is tightening a little. Would be great fun to be selected in the same team as Joe Veleno! However, Ron Hextall calls the name of Libor Zibransky.

I also have a funny thought as choice # 69 arrives. Images of the film Goon pass me in the head, and it is only by an ear that I hear the selection of Jarmo Kekalainen Blue Jackets.
-From Saint John Sea Dogs, Cédric Dumas.

My new team, the Blue Jackets, can count on stars such as Artemi Panarin, Zach Werenski and Sergei Bobrovsky. . They finished 12th in the East this year.
Not long after, at the 106th rank, my teammate Daniel Hardie sees his name called by the Buffalo Sabres !

So I'm preparing to spend a summer in Baie-Comeau training hard to get ready for the training camp Jackets!
