It was VERY nasty. holydogg, you're right, there is a line between physical play and all out agression. Hollweg's initial hit on Simon was a little questionable - it was definitely from behind. That said, Simon's reaction was downright stupid. Does anyone know if Hollweg is seriously injured?
My guess is a 5-10 game suspension. Anything less than that and it's a joke.
Simon's a jerk, always has been since his days at the Capitals (of course he never played for the Bruins so I'm a bit biased). That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if the league makes an example of him with all the recent "dirtiness" going on in the league of late. Suspended for the rest of the season wouldn't surprise me one bit. This one is on the level of the Bertuzzi or McSorley hits.
Such a stupid move. And he was always one of the goons who could play. It is too bad he turned into such a jerk in this moment. No excuse for him, he knows better. I always thought of him as a guy who played with at least an ounce of repsect for other players, at least after he had been in the league for a few years. I thought he had learned. Guess not. Should be as long a suspension as Bonehead Bert's, but it won't be.
Although it is all over everything in the USA...again great publicity...Buffalo-Ottawa, this, Bertuzzi, that Hab player in Hamilton (Perezhogin? can't recall) . So maybe he gets a big one.
Rome is talking about it unsurprisingly. He said NHL gave indefinite suspension pending investigation. Campbell and Buttman may hit Simon harder than the usual 3-10 gamer because of the exposure, and because they took such a beating for Buffalo-Ottawa. However, I doubt it. 5 games cause it appears Hollweg not hurt. If he was Simon would get 7 games, because Hollweg is not a super star.
I think anytime someone gets hurt because of play or hit like that, they should be suspended for 5 games, and then on top of that suspended for as many games as the player they injured was out for.
Ray Ferraro was on Rome. He says Simon should be out the rest of the year at a bare minimum. Says this is McSorley 2. And that the NHL got lucky with Marty because he decided not to come back and play again. So they never had to put a definite on Marty's indefinite. Ray says if he had his way would be a similar suspension to what Matt Johnson got for the Beukeboom incident, and maybe a little longer. NOTE: Ray was on the Kings when Johnson pulled that stunt. He says Simon snapped in exactly the same way as Matt. For some reason, just lost his cool and should be punished for it heavily, even though it is not the norm for someone like Chris or Matt.
This is not sport, just a free agression. Sure, Hollweg's hit is from behind. That's forbidden and dangerous and must be sanction according to the rules of this game. But Simon's aggression has nothing to deal with sport. If i was commish, such things would be a minimum of 1 year suspension.
Neil, Janssen now this.....whats going on lately???
Well, Neil got no supplementary discipline and Janssen only three games....what do u expect??
I really hope they do now something right and suspend Simon for a long time (I have read that he's suspended indefinite) as plays like that do a very little favour to so a great league as the NHL.

*finds can of worms...opens*
Neil's hit wasn't dirty.
Still, I agree. I would suspend him for a long, long time.
Man, crosscheck to the face...he should sit the rest of the season at a minimum plus however long Hollweg is out after that (if he is out into next season).
I love physical hockey...I love the occasional fight...this was simply a cheap shot & should be dealt with severely.
To me, the worst part of the hit was one of the fans behind the play. You can clearly see a guy stand up clapping for Simon's two-hander.
I am going to stand out on a limb here and say it's an isolated incident, and I will not hold judgement over Chris Simon as a player or as a person. I certainly don't hear anyone holding such incidents over the heads of Scott Niedermayer or Tony Granato.
TSN Article wrote:It always looks worse," Witt said. "I saw the guy after the game, he looked fine. That's enough to tell me that it wasn't THAT bad. You know what I mean?
The ref obviously thought it was clean," Witt said of Hollweg's hit. "Maybe if there had been a call, it would have never escalated to that.
I'm really quite surprised that Witt said that about the slash being 'not THAT bad'. Come on, it was just a matter of chance of how bad it was going to be. Either way the intention was there. What if he had been hit in the eye, or had half of his teeth knocked out? Then what?
I also don't think it would have mattered if it was called or not. As soon as Simon got up, he was looking for Hollweg, you could see it in his face, he wasn't worried about there being a penalty or not.

Well, to be fair it really wasn't that bad.
That doesn't mean it couldn't have been bad, though.
It's pretty obvious that he got the brunt of the stick right on the chest pad which is incredibly lucky for both of them. An inch or so higher and we could have had a fatality because it would have been all neck.
Simon should be thankful he didn't decapitate him and Hollweg should be thankful that he isn't dead.
So I agree with Witt, it wasn't that bad but it certainly had the potential to be fatal.
Of course, it wasn't that bad. And so? Does it gives the authorization to other players to do the same thing, as it wasn't that bad this time? If so, Hollweg's hit from behind on Simon wasn't that bad either and we should encourage hits from behind!
Come on! This is ridiculous! We don't have to care if Hollweg is seriously injured or not in this case. We don't even care if he is injured to apply a suspension. Simon's slash had absolutely nothing to deal with sport and was potentially very dangerous for another player's physical integrity, that's all what matters! From then, the 15-22 games suspension is ridiculously low and won't discourage goons to make same slashes. Maybe Buttman will more strict the day Crosby or Ovechkin get such a slash and get forced to stop his carreer because of a too serious injury...
It make me think about the ridiculous rules about "blooded" injuries. A player could get a minor cut and still be in shape, the aggressor got a huge penalty but a player could be lying dead but no blood.. 2 minutes minor!

I wasn't saying that it gives them the authority to do it, I was just saying the play in question wasn't as bad as it could have been.
Hollweg played today vs the Penguins, in case anybody didn't know.
From what I have seen from Hullweg, I have come to the conclusion that he knows nothing about hockey other than how to hit or cheapshot people, so I myself would love to hit him... but even with that being said, this was a stupid hit from Simon.
And personally, based on the intention alone, I think he should be forever banned from the league... not get a max. 22 game suspension. That's just assuring that it will be at least 22 games before he goes and an tries to behead another player.
