Why horns for a goal?

Post by Shadd666 »

Is anyone knows why we always hear a horn where a goal is scored? I mean: why a horn? I guess there's a reason, maybe a funny historical one, but i really wonder which reason... :dunno:

'Cause it's cooler than bird chirping.

I've always thought it's to piddle off the opposition (the goalie). Can't be too much fun hearing the toooooooot, toooot every time you allow a goal. :)

Yeah, for sure it's fun :p

But i'd like to know why it's a horn that has been chose...:dunno: As it's used all across the globe, i guess there's a specific reason, some sort of "historical" reason...

Some of the "younger" NHL franchises started do the big fog horn sound when goals were scored. Very loudly and for a long time! Personally, I'm not a big fan of it. It's artificial noise. I think they do it to make sure all the non-hockey fans there know a goal was scored. In real NHL cities, the fans make enough noise on their own and know when a goal is scored.

The Hartford/Carolina fog horn is the greatest.

Don't hate.

I like the goal horn. I think it adds to the excitement and rush when a goal is scored, especially in the playoffs.

It's celebratory, I don't know when it first started being used in hockey games. It's probably going to be lost in time, just as it would be to wonder who first started playing a specific song after the home team scores.

My guess is that it's just one of those things where the more noise for your team's celebration, the better - and obnoxious horns do that.

And I'd also guess that it's first use was probably an idea from some team official. Maybe he didn't want to settle with watching the opponents' anger after being scored on, so he figured he'd have someone blare a horn to scare the living daylights out of everyone on the other team, to further anger them.

:dunno:

A more pragmatic hypothesis: back then, a long time ago, it was the available technology for "noising" the goal.

No sampling or digital sound ;)

Interesting things, but why a horn???

Even with the technological hypothesis, they should have used drums, or dynamite to be more extreme :p But why a horn?

:bustacap: That's exactly the one I hate. Some of the other "warm climate" teams tend to get a little excessive with them too though.

No it wasn't...

Teams used them before the Whalers were even thought of existing!

Unless that was sarcasm... :-? :-? :-?

Best horn ever...Chicago Stadium...and the pipe organ too!!!! Now if they could only ice a team...in the old rink. Gotta love Mario thinking about retro rinking, and making like the old Stadium though.

I hope so too, then we'll have the best arena in the league to go with the best team ;)

They did bring the old pipe organ over, it stands as about the only thing they did right in building the UC actually

And yes InStaaled, it was sarcasm. You could tell by the italics and the  ;)
