1979/80: Pens66's Roster Update
Hey guys, I created a mod that puts EHM 2007 right back into the 1979-80 season. Over 1400 players were created. More details are in the readme file.
Download it, have fun and tell me when you find any mistakes. I will try to improve this even more.

I made some tweaks and added players from the Soviet Union in this updated version. Have fun!

I got a pm that something is wrong with the file. So I re-uploaded version 3 to rapidshare.
I also uploaded a newer version. For this 4th version I made changes while playing the game myself. I honestly can't remember what I changed over the months. I never took any notes. What I know is that I changed some things with the Soviets. I reworked some contracts and added some more players. But I can't remember any details.
So here's both versions, 3 and 4 (4 has no readme!)

Enjoy!

Since that August update no additional work has been done. And, frankly, I do not intend to do more work on this mod.
When I first created the mod I had to stay at home (and in bed for most of the time) for about six weeks because I was ill. Without those circumstances there would not have been a mod in the first place. Now I simply don't have the time and will power to to do any more work on it.
If anyone wants to do so... go ahead. I don't have a problem with that.

Welcome to TBL, ehmfans.
In response to your questions. I'm not quite sure what the 1st is asking and for the second, check out the guide Archie made as to where to put add-ons:-

Just wanted to add a quick thank you for the 79-80 mod; it is awesome!
I tried to do something similar years past and gave up from the sheer volume of work - congrats to you for persevering!
Its a great start. I love it because it made me get out all my old media guides and hockey cards to doublecheck ratings I initially found wonky; I'm glad to report, (that at least for the penguins, that's all I've given a thorough look to so far, over a few test sims) they seem pretty bang-on. Just an aside - Who knew/remembered Gary McAdam was nicknamed 'Wheels'? And was once a promising second line winger? I had certainly forgotten...I had only thought of him as a nondescript fourth line defensive player, now I have a whole new perspective - which is part of what makes this roster set so great!
Now, this set does hold its aggravations for me, and I'm currently working on them. But there's so much work to do!
The big question is...
How do you come up with nine new NHL teams? Pens came up with a good answer, but it left me feeling empty, TBH. It is a good work around, but for me, robbed me of the total immersion factor, that and the freeagents of today stealing roster spots.
The year before, (78-79) there was 26 professional teams (NHL, WHA) surely that means there's at least 5 more teams of talent to choose from - guys that either retired, or disapperared to the minors, went back to europe, or even to Japan, once it became apparent (in real life) that jobs were getting scarce for 79-80.
Then there's guys that retired or disapeared after 77-78; surely its reasonable to believe that if the NHL had exploded to thirty teams in 79-80 - these guys (who aren't in their late thirties) would have had jobs and/or held off retirement or minor league internment.
So I started researching possible players to 'realistically' fill the gaps, and came up with many fascinating stories; like Tom Edur, very promising defenceman who retired due to religious beliefs the year before this roster set - was even offered a contract to play for Pens excluding Sundays! and Bjorn Skaare - Norwegian star, who quit after his lone NHL game (78-79) after being belted by Barry Beck, and requested to be demoted back to CHL! Then there are brothers Bennet, Curt - first US born 30 goal scorer in NHL and Harvey who both went off to play in Japan of all places in 79-80. Curt was apparently a 'god' in Atlanta.
And there's many many more stories just as interesting.
But, what a logistical nightmare trying to make 30 nhl teams out of 21! Not to mention 27 ahl teams to 10 ahl teams in 79-80, (a total of 29 minor league teams if you include the entire I and C from 79-80!) And 12 ohl teams that are now 20, etc, etc, etc...
That said, I'm trying to make the database better. I was wondering if anyone wanted to help out? There seems to be a few people working on their own, doing their own thing, which doesn't seem terribly productive.
I'd like to systematically add all the junior team's rosters, (from 79-80 and 78-79 and 80-81) ( a lot of these guys that never 'made' it in real life - probably will now, with this many more jobs) When I looked through the real life databases, I couldn't believe the amount of players that had decent stats in junior and minors IRL who just disappeared from pro hockey after 3-4 seasons...
After that, I'd like to either add every draft pick (up to a game age of 12 ys old), or conversely, every major junior player up to that age into the database. Just so the majority of guys coming up are real NHLers.
Then there is the deleting of double personnas...adding the real coaching staffs from the time...adding histories to each player....fixing the salaries so the top teams aren't dumping their players at beginning of game...adding all the old pros...doublechecking hgts and wgts and jersey #'s...fixing team names to correspond to 79-80...making sure Pelle Lindberg stays in Sweden for a while....USA players don't show up until end of year after Olympics...deleting todays players...
then there's the entire other job of either scanning my old cards or media guides or internet to make 'rudimenatry' player cards...
Its a huge job.
But I think its doable for 3-4 people initially. You could just swap the database around; Monday, Johnny is gonna input all Kitchener Rangers from 78-81 just making sure their heights, weights, shot, hometown, position is correct - we'll come back to their ratings later...Tuesday, Henrik is gonna do the same for Niagara Falls, etc, etc...Then noone is overcome every single day. Just a few hours twice a week each...
I know, big brave talk from a first time poster. So what have I done so far to make this happen?
Well with all this work needed on the database, I've taken the completley illogical step of changing the nine new NHL team names and creating home and away news icons for every NHL team! I've got 5 more to go...I'll post a couple in an hour or two...once I figure out how to post images...I think they've turned out all right. (I taught myself Gimp over the last month to make it happen - what a powerful little program!)
So, if you're interested in this project, PM me, if not, I'll get started sometime next week once I get these news images banged out...

Welcome to TBL, VintageVictory! You should head over to the Arrivals forum and introduce yourself.
I admire you enthusiasm for this project. One bit of advice though, if you're going to use Pens66's database as a starting point, you should really ask his permission before going forward with it. It's just proper etiquette.
