The Mr. Everything Ed Chynoweth (pronounced Shinooth) in the WHL has passed away yesterday. Those of you who are young and who are outside Canada may not have heard alot about him, but he has been huge in hockey and in particular the WHL.
In 1988 he got to present the Memorial Cup to his son Dean the captain of the Medicine Hat Tigers when they won the championship. Just this year, the WHL Championship Trophy was named after him
It would be really hard to find 1 person who has contributed more to Canadian Junior Hockey. Everyone could/would have learned a ton about the game just by meeting him 1 time. I never have met him, but I wish I had the opportunity.
Read more about Ed here.
I can recall hearing this man's name in the sports news as early as when I was 5 years old. Of course, back then in the WHL it was usually because he had to suspend 1 or 10 players. Often on my then favorite team.
His name has always, always been in the hockey world. He was a big advocate of keeping kids in school, and pushed hard for the new Education Scholarships offered by the Canadian Junior Leagues.
Ed will be missed in the world of hockey. Absolutely no question.
