Ruutu on that list because he will not shy away from fights. Must stop diving though.

you know, other players don't like their tricks: Ruutu's divings, Ovetshkin's, Pronger's, Laraque's and Avery's outrageous tricks (knee tackles, Avery's stickhandling in front of Brodeur, everything dirty what referee's don't mind or what they don't see.

Pronger's hit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L394qk_chck
Ruutu: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bj0hq7qvkCI (check 0.29 :-D )

If i remember right, last year some magazine made list of top ratplayers by asking from NHL players. Top4 was something like:

1. Chris Pronger
2. Alexander Ovetchkin
3. Sean Avery (i think the reason, why he wasn't in 1st position was that he didn't play much in NHL last year, only few games in Dallas and then in AHL and then he was waived to Rangers)
4. Jarkko Ruutu

That poll was made after season 2008-09 and players have to tell their opinion about who was dirtiest player in season 2008-09

I don't know real english term, but i translate it straight from finnish. Player, who makes dirty things, and other players hate him.

It's definitely a real term. He's the type of guy that drives the other team crazy. He might do some dirty things. Everyone hates him... unless he's on your team. Ken Linseman was a good example of a "rat" player.

Ken Linseman is the namesake of "rat" player. His nickname was "THE RAT". What a player. Diff between him and most rats..he was not afraid to drop em. Esa Tikkanen was also a stud of a rat. In today's game the rats are not always as good a player as the used to be.

Another one that should have been on the list is Patrik Kaleta of Buffalo. Super dork. Alex Burrows is awesome too in a different (chirpy) kind of way. So is Kesler. Players on other teams hate those two.

Brad Marchand will be a pretty good rat in the future. He's played a little in Boston this year but he hasn't made the full leap to the NHL yet.

What do you mean? Like he threw people around and hit them with the stick every time ref was not looking and as Gretzky assists another Kurri goal? Not that I think he's a rat. :-D

Axwel what you wrote is definition of rat. Add in chirping, and getting some points and you have a super rat. Tikkanen learned well from Linseman.

Marchand chirps a lot. The kid is always running his mouth. But he does play physical (not bad for his size) and seems to really play his heart out.

I voted Jarkko Ruutu. He's just the most entertaining rat I've seen. Ovetchkin is obviously my favourite, but in another way. I don't consider him "a rat", I just see him as someone who plays well and plays hard. Then again, I've not seen him play real dirty. Seen only a couple of Caps games sofar this season.

Next time me (or someone else) makes this kind of poll, don't put Laraque to this list (he's only fighter), Downie, Kaleta or Marchand are better rats. I mean, Laraque isn't rat, but i put him cause i wanted 5 candidates and i didn't remembered Downie, Kaleta and Marchand. :-)

And about Tikkanen and Linneman are retired players. Maybe i (or someone else) should make sometimes a poll about all-time rats. :-k

I voted for Ruutu too. I used to really hate him but in recent years he became my favorite. Partially Tasku learnt me to like him :-D

Speaking of Marchand, he just had surgery on a tendon in his foot. It was sliced by a skate blade in an AHL game recently. It's a shame. He was doing really well in Providence.

Well then Avery is out contention as he's hated even by teammates!
