How to set up VNC Server for EHM

Post by shooter_80 »

With hosting an online league, you will never be at your computer 24/7. Often times, the game has error messages which disables your GM's to access the game. Sometimes, usually during peak activity periods such as free agency or the trade deadline, the game can crash (in this case all changes GM's have made since the last save are deleted).

Because of the above, we use a program called VNC. This program allows you to give access to GM's in your league to access your computer. It allows them to fix the game, save the game, or even start the game back up if it has crashed.

In DM, we have over half the GM's with VNC access. All of our GM's need to have MSN to be in the league so GM's without the program can message GM's with access on MSN for a save or fix.

First make sure you have the relevant ports open on your router/modem - you need to open ports 5500, 5800, 5900. The best site for instructions on how to do this is listed below, make sure you have you router make and model handy.

Here is how you install VNC Server.

1. Download VNC Viewer & Server from:

http://www.realvnc.com

Then select the following to download:

VNC Free Edition for Windows
Installer including both Server and Viewer

2. During the installation, leave the tickboxes which refer to the VNC Server System Service unticked, to prevent VNC Server being installed in Service-Mode on your system. THIS STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT AS IT WILL SET UP FINE BUT THEN HAVE A "NOT ACCEPTING CONNECTION ERROR".

3. Open up VNC Server (User Mode)

3. Ensure you have VNC Password Authentication. If you do not enter a password then it will not work.

4. Next, you need to drag the executable file for VNC Server (User Mode) into your Start Up Folder. This will ensure that if there is a problem, your computer can be restarted and people can still access VNC.

Enjoy!

I've found port 5900 was needed for VNC, and port 10095 for ehm 05' to run. The new versions of VNC allows for automatic start up so step 4 is unneeded.
