Researchers needed
Time has come to start researching and populating the pre-game database. At this point we are looking for the following:
Cities
Currencies
First names & last names
Injuries & illnesses
Languages
Nations
States
If you are interested in helping out, please post which part(s). When everything is set up at our end and the researchers have been selected they will be contacted and given further instructions.
Unless Ogilthorpe has changed his mind, injuries are already covered. Nation specific data like cities, names, languages and states can obviously have more than one researcher.
If you have any questions, post them here as well.

What I like best is the geopolitical/ethnic aspect, so those I'm most interested in are nations, states, cities and people names - but I sure won't do it all by myself!!
As a rule of the thumb, I tend to be more interested by the smaller hockey nations and ethnic groups than by the very elite, so I guess this is what I can mainly research. I already have more or less long name lists I used to add to EHM or FM to make them better (some for ethnic groups like the Inuits and the Tatars for instance), so I guess I can simply reuse these for the project and do research for whatever small hockey/non hockey nation nobody else picked.
I can also take care of the province of Quebec if nobody else claims it.

Yes, i put the question mark behind your name because of your loose claimYZG wrote:
Good news!
So far it looks like I'll end up with a mountain of work! But that's OK, though I do hope a couple of people will want to handle parts of all what hasn't been claimed yet (I made a loose claim on what wouldn't be picked in the end, NOT on everything that hadn't been picked when I posted!). List building progresses well, though.

At the moment first priority would be getting core things on geographical point-of-view. Nations, US & CAN states (and maybe RUS), main cities on top 20 hockey nations ( and in this order). After these then it would be languages, names and namesets. Third part (will and it can last undoubtably for very long) will be filling gaps and building up more info on ALL the categories. So to get started, we would need someone to fill nations before any other data can be filled. This will be really easy job, just fill nations from wikipedia or other resource. Anyone up for a little finger exercise?

I've built an editor site so editing will be done to one database that will be our development db and will also be base for future db:s. It is important to get enough information straight from the start, because it will help in our development of main game logics behind the game.
I've listed names that I picked from this thread who have volunteered for help. If I have missed someone or marked wrong things please correct me.
-Injuries [Ogilthorpe]
-Cities, Names, Namesets, Languages (Finland) [rottamies]
-Currencies [A9L3E]
-names, namesets, languages? (USA) [bruins72]
-Cities, States, Nations, Names, Namesets, Languages [YZG]?
-Cities, Names, Namesets, Languages (Denmark) [ElQuapo]
-Cities (USA & Canada) [nathanli]
Tables that we edit do relate each other (for eg. must have State before a City and Nation before State) so we must do editing in some order.
Stay tuned more info will follow, either tomorrow or next week.

If some people have some spare time and some knowledge, I can send some very detailed namesets for Sweden, Poland, Russia, Germany and Italy, sets I consider done. All have over 1000 lastnames (German one almost 2200; I really didn't think there were that many!). The one thing that would be needed with those sets would be to assess the "commonness" of lastnames (and update first names as much as possible if need be) as it's always what I have the most difficulty with.

Helo!
If you ever have need about Slovenian database
I'd have no problem filing in everything... I have a huge list of first and last names, that i made allready for another game once...
So everything about Slovenia,
And I could also do some stuff like Cities for countries like Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Italy, Hungary, Austria ... (if you don't have native people for it)

I have been searching for a new Hockey Manager game since it was announced that EHM was done, this is very exciting.
I am willing to do anything that help will be needed with. I am in Winnipeg, Manitoba, but have played junior hockey all across Western Canada (BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba) and know the areas there pretty well and the way the hockey world works there very well. If you need any help at all I will. Let me know. Thanks.

I would be happy to help out with States, cities, namesets, and languages for Canada, and/or for the USA as needed.
I know bruins is doing some of the work for the US, so let me know what (if anything) you need help with.
I'll monitor my PMs if you need help. Just let me know the details and I would be happy to assist with such an ambitious project!

Pithius, I'm more than happy to get some help with the US stuff. I've been very busy and haven't had the time to do much with it.
What I've done so far is come up with a spreadsheet that takes all 50 US states and lists between 3 and 6 of the top ethnic backgrounds in that area, based on US censuses. Then I took out instances where there were a large percentage of the people who said they were "American". I also combined where there a couple cases of French and French-Canadian in the same state. And in states where there were a large percentage of the population that were African-American or Hispanic, I reduced those percentages because of the rarity of these ethnic groups playing hockey. Just because 22.2% of Californians are of Hispanic ancestry, doesn't mean that 22.2% of hockey players from California are Hispanic. There were a couple ethnicities that I found to be rare in hockey but high percentages for some states. I took those out and they were worked into the "Miscellaneous" category that I included for each state. So what I have is between 3 and 6 categories for each state, one of which is "Miscellaneous", and their percentages add up to 100.
So those categories that each state has percentages for are namesets. So for the US, I'll have namesets for African-American, English, French, German, Hispanic, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish, and "Miscellaneous". The "Miscellaneous" nameset will have a collection of "generic" or non-ethnicity specific first names and a wide variety of last names with origins from Greek to Chinese to Indian to Russian. So we won't have Ivan Chang but we might have John Chang. It should work out. As for the other name sets, I'm going to include a basic list of generic first names that would be included in each and then add more ethnicity specific first names to that list for that nameset. Then the last names will be specific to that ethnicity.
So far, I've been working on compiling lists of the first names but I haven't gotten into setting up percentages for their frequency (John being 5% while Thad might be 0.001% or whatever). I haven't touched last names. If you're looking to jump in, that would be a good spot. Oh and while I'm setting these up as US_English and US_Irish and US_German, you're more than welcome to apply them to Canada as well, where applicable.
