20 March 2011 Update

Post by dabo »

Hello,

Been awhile since the last update so it is a good time to let you know what we have been doing lately.

I have started to implement the player development part of the game. So far I have been focusing on how practicing affects attribute improvement. Each practice area can be assigned a workload which plays a part in how quickly a player will improve a particular area of his game. When a player is created he is assigned a number of slots in each practice area which will limit his potential max ability in each area. These slots will of course not necessarily be static and may change during a player's career depending on how he is doing. This is pretty much what I am focusing on atm and will look to add other parameters to player development once I have tweaked this adequately. Other parameters are for example experience, game performance and injury history. More details will be made available when I have been able to try this out more which I hope to do in about a month when I will get considerably more free time.

Meanwhile Jatahati has to my understanding completed the schedule creator. When a schedule is created for a league it will depend on parameters such as: how common games are on any given day (perhaps a lot of games are played on Tuesdays and Thursdays) and the league structure. He has now moved on to finishing the database handling which is something Forward needs for the new game creator.

Now you know a little more about what we are/have been doing, take care.

Sounds fantastic. It's great to hear all of the good progress you're making.

With regards to the practising, if players stop practising a certain area, will their attributes eventually drop back down to their original values?

Great news. I just hope that the training won't be like in many sports managers where you had more damage than benefits for some parameters.
Also, are you considering injuries? I think some serious injuries should be able to cut even 4-5 to 7-8 points from the physical attributes.

To answer both questions, the plan is to have attributes react differently on different events; some will take bigger hits due to injuries/no practice than others.

I love what your doing with the schedule. EHM sucks at scheduling so having some inputs would be super. Preferred days, frequency of back to backs, and maybe even length of roadtrips/homestands would all be nice. :) :-D

i have to ask, what is your programming skill? does it mean -> when you press play, the game gives you a random score or can you make the game that has some kind of game engine? i mean does the player skills effect anything in game? do you still learning and think you can do it? i can see your passion for this, but do you have the coding skill? i'm asking this for a reason...i don't know f*** about the coding, but i have some graphical skills, but i don't wanna waste my time with some neverending dream.

And realism of the road trip. An eastern team that travels to play in Calgary should spend several days in the area and play against Edmonton, Vancouver and maybe keep going along the Coast, or return eastward with stops in Chicago, Detroit and Columbus for instance, for cost efficiency. I guess this is one of the areas where entering adequate latitudes and longitudes for every town becomes quite important.

Glad to hear the project is still advancing! I've pretty much put my data gathering tasks on hold the past few weeks, but should be able to resume them soon.

YZG, you make a great point about road trips and travel efficiency! I'd love to see that taken into account by the game's scheduling code.
