Concussion

Guys, why are players rested for so long when they have a concussion? Crosby had been out for ages, but in other sports, like soccer, players are much faster able to play.

The goalkeeper was knocked-out by the knee of his teammate. He was unconscious for about 20 minutes and slept the night in a hospital. He has a severe concussion, but he will be back within weeks. He actually is training already.

Here also a goalkeeper who was hit is the face. Unconscious for 10 minutes, concussion was confirmed, but he will play the next game, barely 2 weeks after the incident.

So, why are NHL player so incredibly long sidelined when having a concussion?

I can't say for sure, but I would imagine it's just due to the serious nature of concussions, and the high risk that comes with hockey.

Probably more than any other sport, hockey is very inviting for concussions... you've got the hard ice, the unforgiving boards, the solid puck, unnaturally high speeds of the players, and the allowance of hitting, fighting, and rough play. Considering all this, I would assume hockey concussions are often worse than you'd get elsewhere, and that you'd want to be that much more certain that you're over a concussion before getting back into such an environment.

Also, Crosby is a baby, so naturally, he'll cry and whimper longer than the average hockey player

Each concussion is different from the other. There is no way to compare them .

Agree, but the average NHL players is out for months rather then weeks and Barney pointed out a few good reasons. I understand that the risks are high, but come on...

Crosby out for almost nine months, he's not pregnant, is he?

Haha I like that!

@Satyr, don't forget that Crosby played with probably a concussion and he's been hit later by Hedman ( which wasn't a bad hit at all ) but just the fact he probably had a concussion, just made it worse with that hit. If you play with a small concussion and get hit again, it will be worse for sure. I'm sure too that because hockey needs alot of balance, you know quickly if you are ready or not to return playing because it's a major symptom of a concussion to have your balance mess up.

Heh. Stinson funny.

1. Each concussion is different.
2. Each player reacts differently to concussions.
3. It may be that in soccer circles, they have not yet realized how serious they can be. I mean hockey just put this stuff in place in the last 2 years. North Americans appear to be taking concussions more seriously...at least the doctors are...than anywhere else in the world.
4. It is going to get even more serious following the Rypien, Boogard, Belak situations. Not to mention Fedoruk and Kordic and many others.
5. PHYSICAL contact in hockey.
6. As Stinson said....well no. Crosby is out because he needed to be out. No reason to be back until he is 100% sure he can go.

7. Soccer players are tougher than hockey players. HAHAHAHAHAHAAHA.
8. Seriously, soccer has magic spray. You see it all the time where soccer guys are seriously injured and out on the field. Then the trainer comes with the spray and they are good. These guys with concussions just get an extra dose of the spray after they are off the pitch and they are good to go.

FInally...it is not always months with hockey players being out. Seabrook last season was at the most a week or two. Savard after his first one was a week. guys who get more than 1 tend to be alot longer coming back as the effects are cumulative on the brain.

Heh in the UK we have the "magic sponge" in football/soccer (or at least in the lower leagues). It's basically a car washing sponge in a bucket of freezing water. Just the fear of the cold sponge is enough to get the player back on their feet.

I guess the different between soccer and hockey is the physical contact. There's no body-checking or board play in soccer. Having said that, soccer players can be out with concussion for just as long as hockey players - it varies case by case.

P.s. it sickens me to call it soccer, but I thought it'd be less confusing for our North American friends!!

This should be the number one priority of the owners..I can't believe that all they talk is the freaking shootouts.

(still really frustrated with Shane Doan's hit on Letang)

It is a very high priority for ALL hockey people. Unfortuantely, hits like the one on Letang, the one Toffoli pulled on Burrows and the one Burrows pulled on Gaustad...have not been punished. (Well the Burr-Gaustad one) shold not have been....other than during the game if at all.

FAST FAST FAST game...Big big big boys. Collisions and bad stuff going to happen. HAve to EDUMACATE, have to teach, have to have discipline...and they will eventually get there, but it takes time to learn and I mean...we still only know the tip of the iceberg on concussions.

Also..equipment manufacturers need to get better. STudy out of Pa....recently saying most helmets suck at helping out when brain is banged around.

Finally...the only way to completely stop concussions in hockey...stop playing hockey.

Still, I would hope the NHL owners would make this their priority number 1, before the shootouts... If anything the shootouts bring some kind of excitement to the game.
(Complain about shootouts or not, they are great to watch, but that's another debate)

Shootouts suck, and it really is not that high a priority...it is the one that gets talked about alot that is all. League is just trying to do things fans want.

Absolutely it is. edge of the seats awesome. And with guys getting tired....the mistakes happen and the over coaching goes out the window. Makes real hockey where the players make the decisions on how the game will end.

Agree, but for regular season I prefer penalty shots instead of endless OT. Maybe it's the time difference, a home game of the Pens (or any Eastern Conference game) begins at 1am over here, so I'm glad if I hit my bed at 3:30am...
