Which attributes affect development?

Post by skunt »

a few questions:

Does anyone know how exactly attributes like Determination and Work Rate help or hinder a player's CA/PA?

Are there any other attributes (in particular i'm wondering about pressure and consistency) that might affect a player's overall development? If a player has a low consistency rating, would that stop him from reaching his maximum PA?

For example, if a player's determination increases by one point (which will sometimes happen in game), that seems to improve his CA.

alternatively, if i design a lazy, mentally weak player (low det and work rate), he will initially show improvement, but his attributes regress over time... sometimes ending up below where he began the game.

It would be nice to be able to anticipate this lack of development/regression so that I can design players accordingly. While browsing this forum looking to see if anyone had already answered my question, i saw mention of a researcher's guide given to the game's original researchers. Anyone have a copy of that?

From the amount of FM I have played I know for sure these stats have effect on development.

Determination
Ambition(Hidden)
Professionalism(Hidden)

I know for certain that Consistency has no effect on development of the players, a star player can easily develop even though his consistency is 5. The problem then is that he will be inconsistent and have a hard time of playing to his abilities.

Determination is a big factor for me, any player that has under 11-13 Determination and is not a bonafide star will get replaced eventually. Players with low determination will always end up letting the team down when you are down 2 goals because they will lack the drive to continue on.

Ambition is also a very important stat for a very easy reason, Ambition will help your player push himself to become the best and to push himself to the highest of levels. Of course it's a double edged sword because as a smaller NHL team they can end up leaving you for bigger title contenders.

Professionalism is another hidden which is extremely important for players because if the player lacks a professional attitude then they won't do their best in training and matches too. They will end up flaking on you and if they dont have their head straight in practice, then they won't learn much or as fast as the other guys.

Work Rate does not work into player development through practice, a low work rate won't help him improve any quicker than a high one. Of course it is still a very important attribute for the on-ice performance and someone with high work rate and good stamina will always be a motor on ice and work his tail off for the team. On Offense it is a good to have, on defense it is a must-have.

And I added to Ambition and Professionalism that they are (Hidden). That means you can not see them as an attribute directly, but you can find roughly what they are by checking the Report Card at the Scout Report screen. For example my guys have scouted Mikhael Grigorenko, who is a top 5 prospect in the NHL draft and if you go to report card you will see the Mental Characteristics of the player. In his case in my game it says ''Very Ambitious, Determined, Strong Character''
So in his case he has a lot of Ambition and that means he is a man that strives to be the best, and add to that his 17 Determination and his ''strong character'' which should mean he has a good head on his shoulders he should become a guy that will no doubt turn into a star as long as nothing terrible happens.

And to put a prospect on the other side of that fence you got Pontus Aberg, who is also regarded in my game as a top 10 talent.
But when you go to his Report Card my scout says that he is ''Unambitious, Mercenary''.
The first thing that jumps out is of course ''Unambitious'', that means very simply that he lacks ambition (8 or less) and that he lacks the pure drive to become better and better, that means he can be a liability in development because he can pretty much end up going ''Too much effort, i am happy with my current ability'' and stall in his own development and end up as a scrub player and a useless draft pick.
He also got ''Mercenary'', that means that his Loyalty is below average and that he has little problem switching teams if he can earn a better wage there. Of course that is also a liability, but not so much in development.

You can't really predict someones development unless you grab an editor and look at all his hiddens exactly, but by way of scouting and having a good knowledge of mental stats you can equate a bit on what player has a good chance of improving and becoming better, and what player will end failing. Of course there are always possibilities that you will get a low determination, ambition, Professional superstar that will light the league ablaze, but the chances of that happening is a lot smaller than a guy with high det, Amb, pro stepping up and becoming a big man for his team.
It's also a great way of looking for possible draft sleepers because you are always better off gambling on players who lack technical skills but have good Determination and hiddens because they can end up getting a sudden unexpected growth spurt and turn into a solid guy for little money and low risk.

I hope this helped you, if you have more Q's then ask.
