Re: Researchers needed
Hey Dabo,
Good Luck with your continued development of your Hockey Manager.
Just wanted to let you know that I used to be the NHL Northwest Head Researcher for EHM:2007. If you need any help with the project, please let me know and I will do what I can to help. In the meantime I will read up on what your plans are with the project as I just stumbled across this today after wondering if people were doing current updates for EHM:2007.
Drop me a line at rkomm@telus.net

I am sure your contributions will be very helpful; at this point we don't know when players and such are gonna be added to the database but keep your eyes open.

Re: Researchers needed
Would love to help ypu out with Germany, just tell me what you need exactly. I understand you need names for First and last names and cities of birth so far, is taht right? Would be no problem to do that. I would even inlcude hockey hotspots among the cities and famous hockey families.
Just tell me how many names and cities you want and in which format i should deliver. Maybe i could also add probability of origins to city names by naming big cities and hockeytowns more often in the list so if the programme chooses randomly the chance to get a guy from a hockeytown or big city is more probable.
Just drop me a line when i should start..

Re: Researchers needed
Hey, if you need any help, I'd be glad to help out. I was the Swedish head researcher for EHM 2007, did beta-testing and translating. Worked on all three games.
So I've a got a bit of experience.

Re: Researchers needed
Like several others posted here, I was just checking in to see if anything is new. I too am offering my assistance if wanted. I'm generally familiar with NHL, AHL, & ECHL teams. I have some history with community databases so I think I could help there, but I'm open to any challenges.
Feel free to e-mail me at moore4807@comcast.net and what you need me to do.

Re: Researchers needed
Currently we could use some extra people to help out with languages and namesets; if anyone wants to do this let us know.

Re: Researchers needed
What kind of help with languages? Namesets, do you just need two docs with a bunch of common names in i.e Sweden? Simplified obviously, but that's what you need?dabo wrote:Currently we could use some extra people to help out with languages and namesets; if anyone wants to do this let us know.

Re: Researchers needed
In good part, yes. Here is a more complete portrait of our needs:
1. Namesets: we need volunteers to build lists of first names and last names for people of a given ethnicity, for instance Swedes or Finns. Those lists should as much as possible be balanced according to real-life proportions (so that the more common names are used more often in-game when players are generated), but it's not always easy to do, especially with the smaller nations. I'll post a more detailed list of our needs soon.
2. Namesets per states: Countries are rarely monolithic blocks of a single ethnic group, and that has to be taken in account in the game. For instance, for Sweden, there's a ratio in the population of about 85% Swedes, 5% Finns, 10% foreigners (or at least, something like that). Generated players should reflect this, and there's an area of the db for that, which needs to be researched. Usually, since foreigners' kids are less prone to play hockey than local ones, I advise to divide their proportion by two or three and split what remains among the main ethnic groups. I think Bosniaks are rather numerous in Sweden, so that'd be one of them.
3. Languages per states: same concept than number 2, but with the languages players speak depending of where they come from within a country. In some, there'll be no real difference, but in others, there will be. For instance, in Finland, it's reasonable to expect that many people will be able to speak some Swedish, especially in the areas adjacent to Sweden or in the capital. It's also reasonable to expect a small percentage of the players hailing from Lapland to speak Sami. The main languages are what matter the most, since it's those that have a real impact in the game; languages spoken by 1 or 2% of the population can be fun eye candy in the bigger nations, but gets totally abusive if applied on a planetary scale. A couple hundred languages are already listed in the db, but you can add more as desired.

Namesets left to do:
Of hockey-playing nations:
Slovenian, Estonian, Serbian, South Korean, North Korean, Algerian, Welsh, French, Norwegian (first names only), Flemmish, Wallon, Mexican, New Zealandic and Australian (may or may not be pertinent), Catalan, Bashkir.
Of non-hockey-playing nations:
Most. Is understood here almost every African nation and many Middle-Eastern, Asian and Oceanic nations. Ditto for most Carribean and Central/South America, except Argentina and Brazil.

I don't know why, but I seem to have completely forgotten about this endeavour.
Sorry, guys.
You can run the Polish data past me.
And even though I'm by no means an expert on Polish hockey, I'd still like to help in any way I can. Just let me know what you need.

Re: Researchers needed
hEY YZG! Sry for my absence the last couple of months, my cpu crasched and i could`nt buy a new one, so all of my research besides the one i put in to the list is all gone. So, my question is, is it to late for me to complete my work with first/last names for Sweden?YZG wrote:In good part, yes. Here is a more complete portrait of our needs:
