Although we can't yet get underway with the editor, it is possible to do some preliminary work. If anybody is interested in helping, it is possible to put all of the player career stats into a spreadsheet and then this can be copied and pasted into the editor once it is available. So if you would like to help with the project by entering stats into the editor, you could get started now by compiling the stats into a spreadsheet. Then, once the editor is available, you can go through each player in the editor and paste in the stats. Note that although you can paste the stats into the editor, you still have to manually set the team/competition/year/playoff fields. It is just literally the stats themselves (goals, assists, PIM, etc) that can be pasted.
If you would like to help out then please post in here to say which teams you would like to research (please post these details just before you start researching the teams so as to avoid any users researching the same teams). Ideally, I would like to concentrate solely on the playable leagues to start with. Please note that you should research stats for every player contracted to the team. We are looking for career stats from 2006/07 until 2010/11 (inclusive).
EDIT: The most up to date list of teams and leagues taken can be found on the most recent page of this thread (it gets quoted and updated regularly in new posts)
If you start to put the stats into Excel then it'll give you a head start once the editor has been released. Below is an example of how you could get started with the research. You'll notice that I added Pts for skaters - I only did this because it is included on websites such as hockeydb.com etc. In order to copy and paste the data into the editor, I would first need to delete the Pts column. I just included it here because it's quick and easy to copy and paste the whole lot from the internet and we can then later delete the column once it is done.

P.s. To start with, the editor will only be available for the Manimal Rosters v4.0. I'm using this project a bit like a beta test of the editor. Assuming it all works okay (and I'm fairly confident that it will), I will in the future release the full editor and accompanying programme so that users can edit any other rosters they want.
P.p.s. I apologise if this post doesn't make much sense (let me know if it doesn't and I will explain more) - I've had a busy day!
