2007 Drafts Revisited

With the last of the 2007 draft class now too old to play in the League, it's time to take a look back at our 2007 OHL Priority Selection, and CHL Import Draft classes!

2007 OHL Priority Selection

1st Round (18th Overall): C Francois Semenov

While Semenov never got the chance to play star player minutes, being stuck behind Mathew Campagna, and Devin Hill for all of his time with the IceDogs, he was a solid second or third line presence down the center of the ice for four seasons with the IceDogs. Just finished playing his first professional season with the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Career (Ontario Hockey League): 258GP, 38G, 69A, 107P, +21, 302 PIM, 7.00 AvR
Niagara IceDogs (258 games)

OHL Playoffs: 63GP, 10G, 16A, 26P, +5, 96 PIM, 6.89 AvR
Niagara IceDogs (63 games)

Drafted: New York Islanders, 6th Round (160th Overall), 2009

4th Round (66th Overall): RD Brent Forsythe

Almost immediately upon drafting him the IceDogs traded Forsythe's rights to Sudbury for Mathew Campagna, a deal that worked out very well for the IceDogs! He was later traded to the Erie Otters. He played parts of three OHL Seasons, before finishing off his junior career with Erie's farm team the Huntsville Otters of the Ontario Junior A Hockey League!

Career (Ontario Hockey League): 96GP, 17G, 18A, 35P, +15, 88 PIM, 6.80 AvR
Sudbury Wolves (83 games), Erie Otters (13 games)

OHL Playoffs: 14GP, 2G, 1A, 3P, -1, 8 PIM, 6.36 AvR
Sudbury Wolves (14 games)

5th Round (87th Overall): RD Roger Cote

Cote was the only member of the IceDogs 2007 draft class to play for the team his full five years of eligibility! He was a top pairing defenseman for four of those five years, and capped off his career with back-to-back J.Ross Robertson Cups, and a Memorial Cup Championship in 2012!

Career (Ontario Hockey League): 326GP, 48G, 113A, 161P, +31, 230 PIM, 7.07 AvR
Niagara IceDogs (326 games)

OHL Playoffs: 90GP, 8G, 21A, 29P, -6, 104 PIM, 6.81 AvR
Niagara IceDogs (90 games)

Signed: New Jersey Devils, Transfer arranged for July 3rd, 2012

7th Round (138th Overall): RW/C Daryl Biron

Biron played just one full season with the IceDogs before spending one season with the St. Catharines Falcons, and being released, going on to play for the Hamilton Red Wings of the Ontario Junior A Hockey League, before signing to finish his junior career with the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada of the QMJHL! He has currently been in free agency for an entire season.

Career (Ontario Hockey League): 69GP, 7G, 12A, 19P, -1, 30 PIM, 6.72 AvR
Niagara IceDogs (69 games)

OHL Playoffs: 20GP, 2G, 3A, 5P, -3, 16 PIM, 6.75 AvR
Niagara IceDogs (20 games)

8th Round (153rd Overall): LW Tyrel Vincent

Retired very young, as he is no longer in the database.

9th Round (173rd Overall): G Jomar Mulock

I know he played a season with the St. Catharines Falcons before being traded to Kingston in the deal that brought Czech center Jan Mandat to the IceDogs. He backed up in Kingston for a year, but wasn't very good. He has retired and is no longer in the database.

10th Round (198th Overall): LD Neal Graves

Graves spent 2 season with the IceDogs, used as an extra defenseman, before being traded to the Belleville Bulls for an 8th Round Draft Pick after the 2008/09 season, he then finished his junior career playing for the Bulls affiliated Wellington Dukes of the Ontario Junior A Hockey League. He has been in free agency this entire season.

Career (Ontario Hockey League): 32GP, 2G, 4A, 6P, -4, 16 PIM, 6.25 AvR
Niagara IceDogs (32 games)

OHL Playoffs: 5GP, 0G, 1A, 1P, +2, 2 PIM, 6.40 AvR
Niagara IceDogs (5 games)

11th Round (216th Overall): RW Roch Van Onlangs

Van Onlangs was signed after he was drafted, and played three seasons with the IceDogs affiliate St. Catharines Falcons before recieving his release. He played the rest of his junior career for the Napanee Raiders of the Empire B Junior Hockey League. He never played an OHL Game!

11th Round (218th Overall): C Pierre-Andre Nobel

Retired very young, as he is no longer in the database.

12th Round (238th Overall): LD Courtney Bell

Retired very young, as he is no longer in the database.

13th Round (258th Overall): RW/C Julien McNeely

McNeely was signed after he was drafted, and played one game with the IceDogs before being sent down to the St. Catharines Falcons, where he played for three season, before being released by the IceDogs, he then finished his junior career with the Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, before playing this past season with the New Brunswick Reds of Canadian Interuniversity Sport!

Career (Ontario Hockey League): 1GP, 0G, 0A, 0P, Even, 2 PIM, 7.00 AvR
Niagara IceDogs (1 game)

OHL Playoffs: 0GP

14th Round (278th Overall), LD Rusty Watson

Retired very young as he is no longer in the database.

15th Round (298th Overall): G Phil Lundbohm

Lundbohm never minced words about the fact he wanted to play college hockey, and stayed a Marquette High School two more years after being drafted by the IceDogs before committing to play for the Denver Pioneers, where he played for three seasons. He never played an OHL Game!

Drafted: Boston Bruins, 6th Round (162nd Overall), 2009

2007 CHL Import Draft

1st Round (54th Overall): LW/RW Markus Soberg (Norwegian)

Despite being drafted by Niagara Soberg chose to remain in Sweden and play for Frolunda for two years before signing with the St. Louis Blues, he just finished playing his third season with the Peoria Rivermen, and is now a free agent. He never played an OHL Game!

Drafted: St. Louis Blues, 2nd Round (33rd Overall), 2008

2nd Round (111th Overall): C Alexander Barkov (Finnish)

The IceDogs ended up trading Barkov's rights to the Frontenacs for Czech winger Petr Beranek, and a 2nd Round Draft Pick. Not a bad deal considering Barkov never came over to play in the OHL! Instead he had a successful four years playing with Tappara of the Finnish SM-League, before signing with the Phoenix Coyotes, and playing a couple years with AHL Portland Pirates!

Drafted: Phoenix Coyotes, 1st Round (6th Overall), 2008
